Its great for weight loss. Its great for not getting sick. I am glad I'm on it and will stay on it. I'm doing this for a sort of poll - because darn it, there are many days where food planning and not eating what the rest of the world is eating starts to drive me nuts. I can't ever go back because of the science and logic of what I know now....so that gets me thinking, who wishes, deep down, at least sometimes, that they just hadn't ever started the whole paleo lifestyle to begin with?

(exceptions are people who did it for weight loss, although after maintaining weight for a while they would count for this as well)

Cutting processed food, sodas, candy, and lots of veggie oil is one thing. But all grains and a stricter lifestyle (as the science and logic leads you to want to do) can start to infringe on your lifestyle at times. This is a question about that sort of compliance with paleo.

There was a "paleo disillusionment" question recently, but let's set this up as a sort of poll.

First answer - either "Yes, honestly I do feel that way at least sometimes" or "Love it still, never would wish I hadn't heard of it." Second answer - whichever wasn't posted first.

Up-vote and down-vote each - it's that simple. Lets see how people feel and be honest.

EDIT - I also just can never get over how the only mainstream people that share our lifestyle are a collection of 8-10 doctors and non-doctors who wrote books for us(famous to us, not so much to the rest of the world). Very few celebrities, almost no pro athletes, and the rest of the nutritional and medical communities either barely know about it, or flat out reject it.

All - is it possible to get too much beta carotene? I don't have the yellow skin. I've read that you can have chronic and acute vitamin A toxicity - but vit A and beta carotene are obviosuly not the same. For years I've had at least 30k IU of beta carotene a day from various sources (veggies, vitamins). Recently, as that increased even more (lots of spirullina), I've noticed increased hair loss - wondering if its related.

I work in consulting at one of the big three strategy firms. I find it odd that seemingly everyone else in my business is incredibly smart and innovative when it comes to business and many intellectual ideas, yet at the same time physically most people are in poor shape and eat a pretty awful SAD diet (lots of bread, soda, cupcakes, cookies, the list goes on). Oh, a few vegetarians mixed in. A lot of people seem to be runners but their bodies are not ideal by any means (either skinny fat, large midsection, poor muscle build even for a non-lifter, etc.)

Any others on here that are in strategy/business consulting with a strong interest in it or are doing well in other areas of business. From my view thus far in my career, much is dominated by congregating around SAD foods whenever people can.

Just like some people do OK/fine on a SAD, and some people can only be healthy on Paleo...are there cases out there of people that just can't do Paleo and go back to SAD feeling better? Maybe it was too low carb, maybe too much meat. I don't agree with this or feel this way myself, but just curious.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/63339/thoughts-on-gatoradeThoughts on Gatorade?Chase2011-09-07T17:49:53Z2012-01-05T12:04:01Z

I workout hard and I like to NOT be skin/bones and a bit of lean muscle. This means I just cant get enough calories from meat and fat and I need some carbs (in all likelihood, MAYBE it is true that you just don't need carbs and that they are counterproductive).

So, that being said, I don't want fruit (fructose, simply don't like it, etc). Potatoes are ok but require some work and give my stomach some trouble and a bit of an insulin spike. Rice is pathetic, and obv no grains.

What about gatorade as a way to get some glucose during or before the workout? Maybe 30-40 grams worth of carb from it per workout day. It is all sugar but as I understand not the terrible sugar like soda or the fructose of fruit. Its sucrose.

I've seen posts about phytic acid - with people arguing both points. People seem to almost unanimously denounce phytic acid, but others cite sources and have some agreement that any method to control long term iron aborbtion would be beneficial to long-term health (like how the Japanese eat rice and drink tea, other cultures drink coffee): http://paleohacks.com/questions/67953/iron-in-meat-a-factor-for-inflammation-and-aging#axzz1exisMj4g

Obviously giving blood is a way to do this. But also, i think this is a truly legitimate question considering the source above:

Is phytic acid healthy and beneficial for humans?

Simple question. Let's review the pros and cons. It would be nice to include it in the paleo diet since its so convenient. Some authors say yes, some say no since it causes insulin and is not a natural food (derived from milk).

There are a bunch of questions on whey... but none as simple as Yes or No... is whey healthy and suitable to include in a modern paleo diet?

http://paleohacks.com/questions/77954/90-chocolate-bars-as-energy-bars90% Chocolate bars as energy bars?Chase2011-11-18T03:31:39Z2011-11-18T10:07:46Z

Why not?

I am a lean young guy, a hardgainer, and chocolate tastes great and is convenient.

Is this a realistic energy bar for us?

I'm always on the lookout for easy ways to eat food because I constantly need more calories than a strict paleo diet makes easy to get. I can do a spoonful of coconut oil but honestly it tastes bad and any more than that much makes me sick. I cook meat with butter/coconut oil as much as I can.

Pros:

High fat. mostly saturated
The small carb content is more fiber than sugar (8 g fiber, 7 g sugar out of 19g total carb)
Great taste, mental boost, antioxidants compared to something like coconut oil which tastes pretty bad.

Sugary bars like larabars make me feel sick to my stomach and even gain some fat.

Potential cons:

Too much chocolate if I'm eating 1 bar per day or more? Some say there is phytic acid to worry about in the chocolate.
Addiction to chocolate? Is this bad though if I am fine with eating them everyday? Thats sort of like saying addiction to hamburgers... I dont see the problem if it's grass-fed meat.

So, anything I'm missing here? If my diet is clean and strict paleo otherwise (no nuts, dairy even) and based mostly on meat with some fruit and veg, are chocolate bars an acceptable way to get more calories.

Please don't just say too much of anything is bad ... I know that. But realistically a paleo diet needs some staples to make it work in the modern world - staples like chicken, beef, turkey, berries, etc. I want to add chocolate as one of these staples.

We always hear that many people don't do well on less than 50 g of carbs. Long term it isn't optimal to always be in ketosis. Many people need more than 50 g of carbs for proper thyroid function, etc....

So, since potatos can be inflammatory and insulinnogenic and many paleo authors recommend against them....

and no grains/rice are paleo in the sense of them being around in the paleolithic ...

and between 50-100 g of fruit per day is both hard to do logistically everyday and it is a lot of fructose

and green veggies dont really add up to much carbs at all

and squash, pumpkin, etc. seem like more "rare" foods to me,

What am I missing here?

Who gets them? Why do people get them? Whats the relationship to vitamin D production?

Have always always had some freckles, mostly faint on the face. Historically have always burned slightly in early summer then gotten very dark. Now, since going paleo and taking more vitamin D, I get more freckles on my body. Now coming up with theories for why - such as skin isn't producing vitamin D on its own since taking the supplement so it is trying to make more, or such as my skin is protecting itself since i get plenty of D as a supplement. low carb 100% paleo for 1.5 years. There really isnt much literature out there on freckles and sun and vitamin D.

Let's end this one with some certainty....there are so many conflicting POVs:

Is supplemental vitamin D somehow different than sunshine in that it uses up magnesium and retinol to be converted?

Do you need more supplemental retinol (vit A) when taking Vit D?

Ive seen the WAPF and Chris Masterjohn POVs, as well as John Cannell. These disagree. I've experimented personally for ~6 months now and can't come to a conclusion. I've seen other posts where people raise the issue but it's never really settled to the point where someone described the WHY for the correct point of view. I think its simple, does supplemental D make us need retinol (and why)?

I think it could make sense because the only source of vit D in nature (eggs, fish) is also coupled with vit A.

However, the other point of view would be that we need 5-10 k IU of D per day...and it is not safe (and actually antagonistic) to take higher amounts of retinol to offset that much vit D.

On top of all of this, I personally dont seem to do well taking isolated vitamin D, but am also not clear what combo of co-factors make it effective and tolerable.

Realizing more and more that I do better on more carbs than less - that is, I do better with ~100-150 grams per day than I do on less than 50 grams per day. When I am at less than 50, it is typically just random carbs here and there - veggies, some sugar in my whey protein and other supplements, some carbs from dark chocolate, etc. When I want to higher - I can never figure out if its better to go with fruit (berries) and a few potatoes, or if its ok once in a while to refuel your muscles with a bunch of brown rice or even some granola. I can't seem to get my muscles properly juiced up and charged on fruit and veggies. I have energy, but for someone who lifts a lot and works out hard, I always want more carbs. Potatoes tend to set off a blood sugar spike for me, and they aren't super convenient to cook. Also I know the skin isnt great for you - and i get sick of potatoes too, not to mention if they are sweet potatoes too many will turn my skin orange.

So, i know this is the endless debate, but how should we refuel our muscles if we are working out hard and want more carbs? And please, don't just give an arrogant answer and tell me that "you don't need any more carbs. Your body makes all it needs off of just eating protein and fat". I know that argument, and I'm posting because I feel better with more carbs and want to refuel my workouts.

So I'm 24, and have been hardcore paleo/primal for 1 yr. I've always been athletic, but now am leaner, stronger, faster, etc than ever now. However, at times I still have trouble with the paleo lifestyle - trouble that goes past just getting, searching out paleo foods. I feel much better on more carbs than less, and my body feels like it misses grains like oats and pasta. I noticed in the last year too that when I switched back to a vitamin I took through my teenage years, that I felt much better. Is it possible that even though genetically humans should do best on a strict paleo diet, since most of us were raised on gluten grains and higher carb counts, our bodies adapted to that diet somewhat? Although we can do well switching to paleo, it feels like its just not quite right and that it would be if we were paleo from birth. So, to put it simply, can your own body adapt to a diet through the growth years?
