When I was a lad every house had a rainwater tank and even today in the bush a tank is often the only drinking water available. I grew up drinking it and even now I have friends who exclusively drink rain water without any ill effects. It's amazing when an old tank is cleaned out to see the amount of sludge, dead critters etc that collect over the years. However I wouldn't drink the water collected from a modern polluted city roof.

I have just been reading a thread where people were describing their horrible reactions to cheating over christmas.
A lot of diet gurus advocate a deliberate cheat meal or cheat day to reset leptin and such every so often to facilitate fat loss. I'm interested in peoples take on this. While I'm not a celiac I have no intension of deliberately eating gluten, I hate the way excess carbs make me feel so I won't be doing that either. So while I think the jury is still out on cheating, what does a fairly strict Paleo cheat with?

http://paleohacks.com/questions/97296/omega-3-and-omega-6Omega 3 and omega 6Alan2012-02-13T06:26:51Z2012-02-13T16:25:15Z

I was recently asked for evidence beyond blogs or opinion pieces on the problems with omega 3/6 ratios and how important they are. I have read that o3 isn't all that important and supplementing is unnecessary. I have searched Pubmed but nothing helpful came up. Has anybody any evidence for the inflammatory harm of omega 6 (again not blog posts unless backed by peer-reviewed studies) and the importance of the 3/6 ratio of 1:1 so often quoted?

My 7 year old grandson has just been diagnosed with Whooping Cough. I am in fairly regular contact with him. Given that my increased Vit D3 intake seems to be providing me good common cold protection, (haven't had even a sniffle for years) could I expect any level of protection from this more virulent disease due to my strict paleo lifestyle?
It's extremely annoying that these diseases that were almost eradicated seem to be on the rise.

Its purpose is to prevent you acting out your dreams etc and hurting yourself. Imagine all the thrashing around in bed otherwise. I can be scary to wake up slowly while still paralysed and easily cause panic. You seem to have it the other way around and the paralysis sets in before sleep hits you. Good luck and try not to let it upset you.

In Australia I can buy a 300g jar of virgin coconut oil for $8 but even a small block of cocoa butter is around $30. Considering I go through almost a jar of coconut oil a week I simply couldn't afford 4 times the cost.

What they don't tell you is that excess protein is very easily and quickly turned into fat. I have proved for myself that it is quite possible to build muscle while eating moderate protein on a calorie restricted VLD diet. Good luck.

Being born in Queensland Australia where macadamia or "Queensland Nuts" are a native, I grew up eating them. We had several trees in the back yard. As a small boy I had my favorite spot where a missing stone had left a small depression in the concrete path just the right size to fit the nut. One wack with Dad's hammer was usually sufficient to open the nut without harming the contents. I got so proficient I could keep a constant stream of them going into my mouth. Another good way to crack them was in the vice. There are many good crackers available, at least here in Australia. Just don't put them in the oven!

Occasionally I like to really smash the calories through the roof, 4000-5000 calories every so often just to stir things up and cream is a handy easy way to get the extra calories. So if you handle it, go for it..

I always train fasted with the exception of 5g EAA/BCAA before, another 5g half way through and another 5-10g after then I'll often not eat until 6pm. Some days I may feel hunger around 3pm so I'll have something to eat. Eat to hunger not the clock. I eat high fat adequate protein and low/zero carb. I much prefer to rely on fat for my long term energy needs. I often go all day heavy pick and shovel work fully fasted or if needed, a big slurp of cream for lunch gets me through the day. As always, YMMV.

I suggest you give your friend all the info and web sites you can muster and plan to try a Paleo WOE when he has several months without any events, one month is not long enough. Training is OK but he must be prepared for his training to suffer. Being a marathon runner is no recommendation of fitness, in fact I'd suggest he wasn't fit at all.

When breaking the caffeine merry-go-round I experienced a few days of quite bad headaches but now the occasional cup of regular every other day doesn't cause any addiction problems. I eliminated coffee completely for a month to see if it was causing my sleep problems but nothing changed and reintroduction had no noticeable effect either. I make sure I only drink decaf coffee that has been decaffeinated by the water soluble method with no chemicals used.

After training the body is surging with HGH but eating pretty much kills production. I prefer to keep this going for an hour or two. The body takes a long time to break down and reabsorb the muscle fiber you damaged during training and won't start rebuilding for up to several days so there's no rush. Having said that I do prefer to have some BCAA/EAA before during and after tho.
