http://paleohacks.com/questions/200242/first-pregnancy-how-many-carbs-do-i-need-whats-the-paleo-verdict/200257#200257Answer by Happy Now for First pregnancy, how many carbs do I need, what's the paleo verdictHappy Now2013-06-18T03:39:33Z2013-06-18T03:39:33Z
My midwives were awesome paleo enthusiasts, and when I was trying to figure out my carb load we settled on a goal of 100-175g. Some days it was more, some days less. I've got a healthy, happy baby snoozin' in a swing right here next to me. Don't lose sleep tracking it incessantly, maybe just a check-in sample day here or there.

There is no consensus though about a number that is right for every woman and baby. Babies are not hot house flowers who need mothers to eat perfectly (quality certainly matters, but there is a lot of flexibility). At six weeks you haven't entered the no man's land of food aversions yet, they can rock the faith of anyone who thinks they have their diet figured out. That little baby is going to be in the driver's seat soon, and I think it is best to just eat intuitively at that point. Don't be surprised if you experience bouts of meat and green vegetable aversions, they actually help to protect the baby from excess protein and possible exposure to plant toxins that could be harmful to development.

I really like Cate Shanahan's quote from the safe starch panel debate. "Food is information." You can be low carb if you want to be, but it is important to mindful that you are programing your baby to exist in the world represented by food exposure in utero. If your whole family is going to be lowish carb forever, they will be fine. Like Dragonfly said, the fear of ketones during pregnancy is is unfounded, the level of ketones in the blood of pregnant women with diabetic ketoacidosis is hundreds of times higher than what a baby would be exposed to during occasional dietary ketosis. However, there seems to be evidence that low carb pregnancies can increase the chance of childhood obesity, I'm guessing because small children are sugar fiends, and there becomes a mismatch between what their genes were programmed for and their food environment.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/65570/too-much-salt-improving-adrenal-fatigue"Too much salt" improving adrenal fatigue?Happy Now2011-09-17T17:33:22Z2013-06-14T17:55:59Z

After a bacon filled breakfast and munching on a batch of jerky where I got a bit overzealous with the salt yesterday, I certainly ate a bit more salt than was palatable, and I have the puffy face to show it this morning. In spite of several things that normally set me up for that early morning dizziness when I get up like lack of sleep and a stressful week, I jumped up out of bed without having to brace myself to get through that initial "whoosh" feeling this morning. Don't worry, I'm not planning on "oversalting" on a regular basis, but there does seem to have been a quick and profound difference in my morning fatigue and wooziness. Maybe my bp is just higher today so the blood couldn't drain from my head as quickly, don't know. Just curious if anyone else has noticed this, or knows what mechanism would explain it.

Update--I did notice big improvement in energy after that salt binge, so I've been adding bone broth with a generous dash of Celtic Sea salt to my breakfast the last two days, and have felt an immediate lift from it both days. This morning I can barely get through my mug of 1/2 caff. coffee, I started to get jittery after just a few sips. I've been a caffeine fiend for so long, I'm not sure what I'm going to do with myself if don't need it anymore.

I'm also wondering if my "taste" for salt could be lower than my need? I always thought the rule with salt was "to taste", could my taster be broken or would other stimulants like caffeine block the signal?

http://paleohacks.com/questions/176970/calorie-intake-on-paleo-is-my-deficit-too-low-how-can-i-increase-it/199717#199717Answer by Happy Now for Calorie Intake on Paleo - is my deficit too low? - how can I increase it?Happy Now2013-06-13T22:21:11Z2013-06-13T22:38:56Z
I think being that restrictive could end up biting you in the butt on the weight loss front, in addition to amping up your stress hormones. One of my favorite concepts about being overweight is from Paul Jaminet, and that it is a sign of malnourishment. Our temptation when dieting is to drastically restrict food intake, which just leads to further malnourishment thus compounding the problem.

That doesn't mean you can eat 1000's of calories over what you'd need in a day and still lose weight, but it does mean that focusing on nutrient density and eating to satiety are probably your best bet in creating a sustainable plan that will actually improve your health in the end. You can starve yourself if you really want to, but you don't need to.

PCOS is more about deficiencies than about being overweight, figure out what you are missing, and the rest will start to fall into place. For me that has meant eating more organ meat, root vegetables, and fish. I've spent years studying the most common deficiencies in PCOS, one of the ones that keeps popping up is inositol (B8), which you can either supplement (usually derived from rice), or get a decent dose of it straight from your food if you eat beef or lamb heart (I think chicken heart too, but I can't remember if it is as rich in it), which are awesome meats to cook on a skewer, and make kebobs with some onion, pepper, and mushrooms. If organ meats ick you out, there is a supplement called Simplex F, that is great for PCOS that will at least get you some supplemental organ tissues.

You probably already know this, but getting enough magnesium, sunlight, and exercise is also super important with PCOS.

This candida thing?Happy Now2013-06-12T23:07:49Z2013-06-12T23:07:49Z
How long ago did you take the antibiotics? Sometimes your gut bacteria take a while to bounce back, and you can feel cruddy for a few months in the interim, but then even out. Probiotic and prebiotic foods and supps are probably a good idea.

What kind of health problems are you having after them? There are some really serious health issues you can have after them like developing necrosis of the intestine which would make you really sick and absolutely needs to be followed up with a doctor or an ER visit. Or you can just throw off your bacterial balance a bit and end up with a short term or long term fungal overgrowth, weight gain, or anemia, depending on what kind of bacteria took the strongest hit.

If you think you have a systemic candida infection after antibiotics, Diflucan is a freakin' miracle drug in my opinion.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/199537/eating-only-1000-calories-a-day/199589#199589Answer by Happy Now for Eating only 1000 calories a day?Happy Now2013-06-12T18:57:02Z2013-06-12T18:57:02Z
I'm worried that you've restricted your diet so much that you've possibly crossed over that line where your brain chemistry is on the verge of anorexia, and your body has simply stopped asking for food. It sounds like you are in the grey area where you could reverse it before it gets its hooks in you, but you are going to have to make a point of sitting down and eating 3 square meals a day whether you feel like it or not. Please, please take this seriously, your future ability to have children, and the future of your bones depend on you eating enough good food when you are young. With your age and activity level that needs to be at least twice what you are currently eating.

Some of what you eat might exacerbate your acne, but you are going to have to suck it up and put your long term health ahead of vanity if you want to stay healthy. That is what makeup is for. At 19 hormonal acne is still perfectly normal, if you look around at your class mates you are likely in good company. The flax probably made you break out because it is high in PUFA. Even nearing 40 if I have a lot of vegetable oil, or even plant based omega 3 foods like flax, about 6 hours later I break out.

If your acne is a result of leaky gut, you can start working on that right now, by making sure you get enough gelatin in your diet either through broth or supplemental gelatin. There's always room for jello, right? I make jello jigglers with coconut milk. Here is a recipe http://blog.naturalbirthandbabycare.com/coconut-milk-jiggler-recipe/

There are people who eat brown rice pasta every day, and it takes months to years for their minerals to get run down, so having a serving here and there isn't going to harm you at all. If you are worried about your mineral supply go for white rice pasta.

If you try this for a few months and are still struggling please see a professional counselor because with the combination of fear and not eating/not being hungry it does sound like you are on the slippery slope to a full blown eating disorder.

I know you say you are retaining water, but both cellulite and that denting in your skin indicate dehydration to me. I would recommend eating quite a bit more especially organ meats, soups from home made broth, and leafy greens, taking Epsom salt baths after your bike rides at least a few times per week, and drinking mineral water. You can also supplement with something like Natural Calm.

In general think we been overthinking things and have errored too much on the side of avoidance with feeding our babies. My baby started teething freakishly early (9 weeks), so with the blessing of our doctor we started on solids at 4 1/2 months. I've been giving him small tastes of just about everything I eat, and have purposefully given him a little oatmeal, rice, and let him lick buttered bread in the hopes that introducing it during this window will give him greater digestive flexibility later in life. I think the way we used to cram baby cereal into their mouths 3 times per day is certainly not necessary, and likely detrimental, but introducing modest amounts of grain to stave off later autoimmune reactions seems prudent.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/15857/should-we-pre-chew-our-childrens-food/199023#199023Answer by Happy Now for Should we "pre-chew" our children's food?Happy Now2013-06-08T06:25:00Z2013-06-08T06:38:00Z
Babies eat such small amounts of food that I think it is kind of ridiculous not to pre-chew food for them unless you want to use all pre-packaged or cooked, portioned, and frozen in advance food. Using a motorized blending device for less than a 1/4 cup of food is just silly, in addition to being frustrating for the baby to have to wait while I prep it.

I think kids become better eaters when you start them by chewing up bits of food too, it just becomes a direct "monkey see, monkey do" situation, and they are exposed to a wider variety of flavors foods. Both of my babies have tried to reach up and pull food out of my mouth even before I let them start on solids, I trust that they know what they are doing in looking there for food.

Considering that infants do not produce much salivary amylase, and that starchy tubers seem to make up a significant portion of the diet of many hunter/gatherers, it would make sense to me that pre-chewing might be very helpful when starting a baby on starchy solids to help with digestion and nutrient absorption.

The acquisition of bacteria, other than growing of course, is the one of the most important jobs a baby has. Which is why they put EVERYTHING they can get in their grubby little mitts in their mouths. With over 1/3 of babies being born via c-section now, many vaginal births involving IV antibiotics, and automatic IV antibiotics if your baby ends up in the NICU, there can be a lot of catching up to do on the microbiome front. Pre-chewing is a wonderfully direct way to continue that transfer of bacteria from mother to child if opportunities were missed along the way.

Considering that the simple practice of a parent cleaning a pacifier with their mouth has been found to reduce allergies and asthma significantly in children, think of how much more benefit the child would get from food chewed by a parent.

Can pathogenic bacteria be passed along, alongside beneficial bacteria? Of course. But I think we are all well aware that living in a bubble is not good for immunity, and exposure to a wide range of bacteria is crucial to build a strong immune system. I think the benefits deeply outweigh the risks on this one.

Are some mamas doing it to be attention grubbing punks? Sure. But does that mean it isn't a practical and healthful activity...nope.

Meat should be filling if isolated fat isn't filling you up sufficiently. If eaten in sufficient quantity it will also help you hang on to muscle so you don't shrink.

No need to fear the natural breakdown of fats into Saturated, MUFA, and PUFA, when they are in naturally packaged ratios, to seek isolated saturated fat is kind of an evolutionarily novel concept.

If you are seeking out the fattiest parts of an animal you can't beat brains and bone marrow. Sheep brain is supposed to be very good. Osso bucco is fucking fantastic. I saw an ingenious way of cooking it where you cut the marrow bone lengthwise. Fatty pork belly isn't bad either. Don't forget fatty fish like tuna belly, cod livers, and salmon. Fish roe is freakishly satiating as well.

Sounds like you aren't sure about candida, but if you do suspect it, be on the lookout for a flare in symptoms when switching over to a high fat diet because those little bastards can sustain themselves just as happily on ketones as on sugar. Give her my deepest sympathies. The food sight/smell aversions are the worst because you can be absolutely starving and not able to even touch food to make something for yourself.

I gave in and ate a lot of sushi because it was one of the few things that I could keep down easily. I know common wisdom puts it on the forbidden list, but I believe most of that was over parasite concerns because it wasn't understood that the fish gets a good solid freeze for weeks or months before it is served. The NIH has given it the green light, even though most practitioners still discourage eating it.

Oven pancake and crepes were something that I was able to eat too. If you use coconut milk or cream, rice or coconut flour, a ripe banana, and a bunch of eggs you can make some yummy variations on classic versions of those. For the oven pancake I would preheat the oven to 425, put 1 cup of liquid, 1 cup of flour, a banana, and 4 eggs in a blender and blend them really well until they were all bubbly, and then pour into a hot skillet with 1/4 stick melted butter in it for about 25 minutes. Homemade custard and smoothies I had success with too.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/192243/prep-tips-and-ideas-for-easy-meal-prep-needed/194319#194319Answer by Happy Now for Prep tips and ideas for easy meal prep needed!!Happy Now2013-05-03T19:17:39Z2013-05-03T19:17:39Z
There is no reason it needs to take longer than throwing a lasagna in the oven if you plan ahead enough. Get the whole family involved in the prep work too if you can, so you aren't stuck in the kitchen all alone, and the kids can learn how to cook.

Make one day of the week when you do almost all of your cooking, and cook up things that store well, for example:

pot roast

chili

meatloaf

spaghetti squash with marinara

a whole turkey

a cookie sheet of bacon

a dozen hard boiled eggs

a crock pot of broth for instant stews

a coconut curry soup

Then prepare your fresh veggies, so you can grab and go:

make celery sticks

buy a bag of baby carrots or make carrot sticks

buy a large container of prewashed baby greens or wash and dry your own lettuce

chop up other veggies like peppers you like into snack sized pieces

wash, dry, and chop fresh herbs that you'll be using like cilantro and parsley

stock the freezer with frozen spinach, kale, and squash cubes

For fruit, just keep a fruit bowl around, or stock up on frozen berries

That should keep you covered whenever you need to throw something together in an instant, and then on the nights you feel like cooking you could make really simple things like pan fried steak, or oven baked fish, along with oven baked root veggies like beets, potatoes, rutebegas, turnips, etc. And throw a salad together from what you have prepped, or toss a package of frozen veggies into the baking dish with the fish.

According to some things I've read, adding ground psyllium seed and perhaps some bentonite clay to your diet both decrease digestive transit time, and can grab onto and remove the fungal detritus from your system, so you reduce the amount that gets reabsorbed by your intestine, hopefully avoiding extra misery during a die-off.

I had interstitial cystitis for almost a year on the heels of a UTI that I didn't treat quickly enough, so that can definitely be a possibility. When I was seeking treatment for the interstitial cystitis, one of the last things they had to rule out was a fungal UTI, the bacterial tests that are normally run won't catch those. If you are still in pain, don't just live in misery, please push to see a urologist. In the meantime you might find Bag Balm applied to the opening to the urethra, taking goldenrod horsetail tincture, and drinking watermelon rind tea to be soothing.

Quercetin, if I take 2 capsules a day seems to help keep me ahead of the misery when I remember to take it. You could do a quick test to see if it is allergies by taking Allegra or its generic equivalent for a few days and see if you improve.

I don't think I exactly have the answer you are looking for, but you might find literature about ketogenic diets for Alzheimer patients to be of interest. They don't lower the carbohydrate intake much, maybe because it would be too disturbing to take oatmeal away from people who have been eating it every day of their lives once they develop dementia, they just add a shit-ton of coconut oil and MCT oil, and the results are pretty extraordinary.

I'm also wondering if some assumptions are being made about your success at long endurance hikes. You mention depression, could it be that the famed runners high is what gets you the amazing endurance? Mitochondrial function surely plays a role in endurance, but having just been through child birth, I can say with a fair amount of confidence that the brain juice is where it is at for those almost supernatural boosts of energy, where you feel like you could go on forever.

Just out of curiosity how did you fit 275g into one dinner? Or did I miss something?

That is the goal isn't it, to be able to be a flexible omnivore. I've gone through phases where nothing bothers my belly, and others where even one bite of something can screw me up for days. I wonder if the shots work with the same immune system channels that pregnancy or parasites use. Many people with food sensitivities report them disappearing when pregnant, and autoimmune diseases are much less common in populations where parasitic infections are common.

I was able to eat bread with impunity during my first pregnancy, after not being able to tolerate it for years leading up it. I have also noticed that after eating really well for a about a year, I was healed enough that cheats didn't throw me off as much anymore. There is the risk of going completely off the rails diet wise when you don't have the feedback of inflammatory symptoms (or maybe that is just my weakness). It is much harder for me to resist temptations when I don't fear the pain that might follow. Which does sometimes make me wonder if there is not pain, is there really damage.

If for some reason the shots become less effective, or you change your mind about what you want to try, Helminthic therapy, where you find a doctor who will purposefully infect you with a controlled amount of parasites like hook worm. I know, it sounds freaky, but the little bastards have a very clever way of disabling part of your body's immune response the same way a fetus does so they can live in you without being attacked, and you get symptom relied as a side effect.

People can get into trouble by supplementing potassium by itself if they take too much, so it is best to get from food. However if you do want to supplement a bit and aren't eating foods high in it, salt substitutes at the grocery store are usually made from potassium.http://paleohacks.com/questions/111950/almost-4-weeks-low-energy-low-motivation-and-light-headed/199685#199685Comment by Happy NowHappy Now2013-06-13T21:25:10Z2013-06-13T21:25:10ZAgreed. It takes bravery to sit down with a full plate of food in public and say I need to eat this to be healthy, and that matters more to me than what anyone thinks or what my skin might look like tomorrow. I think you are going to have to just put any worries about acne on the back burner until you get your eating and hunger cues sorted out again. Stress also causes acne, and you are stressing out way too much about what you eat. Can you take yourself out for a well deserved steak and baked potato with butter tonight? Carpe diem! I couldn't disagree more. In the privacy of my own home (so no statement to be made) I did this just this morning with buttered potatoes for my infant son. What is more common sense, just chewing up the few bites that he will eat since he is in the tasting stage and mostly relying on breast milk for calories still, or busting out the stick blender, and having to wash extra dishes to prep approximately 1 tbsp. of food.

If you are 3 weeks in you have given your digestive tract rest. If you have severe candida issues, going after it too aggressively will cause as many if not more problems than the fungal infection itself. I think going slow, and just eating wholesome foods to satiety, with the occasional short fast (less than 24 hours) will be less painful. Fiber can also be helpful for grabbing and removing the die off products. http://paleohacks.com/questions/196449/we-are-all-apparently-snowflakes-when-it-comes-to-diet-what-modifications-to-pal/196490#196490Comment by Happy NowHappy Now2013-05-20T19:06:40Z2013-05-20T19:06:40ZIt totally depends on the person, even celiacs can sometimes tolerate true sourdough bread.http://paleohacks.com/questions/196007/dancing-for-12-hours-without-access-to-food-how-to-survive/196066#196066Comment by Happy NowHappy Now2013-05-20T08:28:55Z2013-05-20T08:28:55ZJust judging from experience, the more physically taxing the pursuit, the less picky my body seems to be about what I eat, just that I need to eat.
