http://paleohacks.com/questions/110692/life-without-soda-juice/110696#110696Answer by Laura for life without soda/juiceLaura2012-04-09T01:00:27Z2012-04-09T01:00:27Z
Try seltzer instead. They were my saving grace when I was trying to kick the diet soda habit. If you are having trouble not drinking juice, a good way to wean yourself off of it would be to start diluting it with water. For example, fill 2/3 of your glass with 100% (no sugar added!) juice, and fill the rest with water...once you get used to that, only fill it half way with juice and half with water and so on and so forth till all you need is a glass of water with some fresh lemon, fresh orange, fresh cucumber, etc. etc. mixed in.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/105157/when-is-the-best-time-to-drink-coffee-before-during-or-after-a-workout/105186#105186Answer by Laura for When is the best time to drink coffee, before, during or after a workout? Laura2012-03-15T16:37:58Z2012-03-15T16:37:58Z
i typically drink coffee before my workouts in order to get that extra little "push," but I found that, for me, there is a very fine line between having just the right amount of coffee and too much coffee pre-workout. If I have too much coffee beforehand, I am way too jittery and anxious, and my heart races insanely fast during the workout. Its almost as if I am not in control of my actions. I typically make a pot of coffee (~ 3-4 cups worth) and drink half pre-workout, then finish off the pot post-workout.

I went off the pill back in September after being on it for almost 9 years. Its been almost 6 months and I am am still amenorrheic. I've been paleo/primal since june 2011, averaging about 80-85% compliance. The whole point of stopping the pill for me was that I was sick of putting artificial hormones in my body. My doctor just put me on progesterone to see if that will kick start things and to rule out any other complications. Hoping this works, but if not, hoping people can give me some advice as to what else I can try!

I aim to be as close to 100% paleo as possible when I am at home, but when I go out to eat, I loosen the reigns a bit. If something has cheese in it, or comes with potatoes, or maybe has some sugar in it and it sounds like its gonna be "worth it"..sure, I'm gonna go for it. But I do my best to modify dishes out at restaurants to conform to paleo standards. Oh, and I go out to eat, maybe once or twice a week, so it doesn't happen too often.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/79637/anti-inflammatory-eating/97167#97167Answer by Laura for Anti-inflammatory eatingLaura2012-02-12T16:49:00Z2012-02-12T16:49:00Z
Any foods that are high in omega-6s are extremely inflammatory. arachidonic acid is the precursor to many eicosanoids that produce an inflammatory response in the body. by upping our intake of omega-3s verus omega-6s, it can have an anti-inflammatory effect on the body. the eicosanoids produced from omega-3 fatty acids are less inflammatory, if not anti-inflammatory, compared to the ones produced from omega-6 fatty acids.

the issue with our country today is that our ratio of O3:O6 is 1:6, or even 1:10. This ratio, in favor of O6, promotes inflammation in our bodies. by consuming more omega-3s, we can bring the ratio closer to 1:3 or even 1:1, fostering a more anti-inflammatory environment in our bodies.

bottom line - watch your intake of omega-6s, while increasing consumption of foods high in omega-3.

Now that I am spending a bit more $$ on food, I make sure to eat every.last.bit. Nothing goes to waste in my house! Save chicken carcasses for homemade stock, shop in the reduced produce section (if you are planning on eating the veggies right away), cook lean-CAFO meats in good quality sources of fat (coconut oil, kerry gold), buy foods in season (they'll be a lot cheaper and taste better!), maybe go in on a cow share with someone, buy lots and lots of canned fish (tuna, sardines, mackerel...great sources of omega-3s), etc. etc. I am a grad student as well, so I don't have a lot of money either. But I do a lot of the things mentioned above and its working for me!

The best change, IMO, is that I am no longer bloated/gassy after every meal. My stomach pains are gone & I have a different feeling of "fullness." It took a while to get used to, but now I know how to recognize the feeling of being satiated.

When buying conventional meat, I tend to pick the leaner cuts of meat, and then cook them in either coconut oil or add kerrygold butter to them. That way I am still getting in some good fats with these leaner cuts of meat.

One thing I do ALWAYS splurge on, though, are eggs. IMO, there's a HUGE difference between store-bought and pasture-raised eggs. I can't go back to eating conventional eggs!
