Sauté little apple slices in butter, throw in some cinnamon and nutmeg, and then probably a little more butter. When the apples are soft, throw them in some gently warmed coconut milk spiked with honey, stir until all the juices are mixed. Put it in a jar or something and let it cool for a few hours or over night. Paleo friendly APPLE PIE filling. A little heavy on the sugar I know, with all the apple and honey, it's not going to kill you. I think it's better than real apple pie.

When the lady asked me if I wanted to give blood, I thought 'No, not a bit' But I hear its good for me, and whoever gets it, and I had no reason not to. I'm training for a marathon, so I'll need them red blood cells pretty badly, they have their work cut out for them. I figured that they would grow back in a week and a half or two, but once again I was wrong. Its more like 56 days, thats what the lady said. So by the time the marathon happens I will not have a full boat of RBCs. Now that I have less ability to carry O2 to my legs, my heart has to work a bit harder, which increases the intensity of my slow jog and pretty much ruins all the progress I've made. Aerobic ability seems to be down by about 7%, right in line with the volume of blood they took. They will of course regenerate, but I'd like to hurry things along a bit, any ideas? I hear low O2 levels will stimulate RBC growth, but I cant go live on a mountain top and breathing from a badly adjusted SCUBA tank is just plain stupid.

Bad home fermentation, die off, or something else?Grover2012-10-18T18:07:10Z2012-10-18T18:07:10Z
If your kraut was really 'off' no act of God or man could have gotten you to put it into your mouth. That being said, it sure sounds like your kraut is the trouble, the timing is just too right. Stop eating it for a week or two, and maybe double down on the bone broth. While your waiting for your guts to purge themselves of whatever it is they hate so much, you might try making a new batch of kraut. Try it without the whey, just for variety. I've never used whey and have never had a bad batch and have never had the terrible terrible troubles you are having now. You'll want to use a bit more salt in the no whey batch, and just in case your first batch is rotten or poisoned or something make sure to not use any of its juice to 'seed' the second batch. Lots of folk will take the last bit of a jar and put it in a new batch to encourage the right bacteria to grow quickly, don't do that with your 'poison' batch.
Here's the recipe I use:
1 green cabbage,
1 small red cabbage,
1 carrot,
salt

grate everything and smash the hell out of it, salt it, mix it, salt it, mix it, stuff it in the jar, smash it, and let it set in the closet for about a week. Then stick it in the fridge or a cool basement for a week before you dig in. Age makes it better, I attribute this to magic. The red cabbage and the carrot will turn your whole mix pink.
Best of luck, and start slowly!

Anger was it for me. Once I found out that most of the ingredients in damn near all the food in the store were poison, put there to increase the profits of billion dollar food companies, who then bribed our government into endorsing and subsidizing their poison, so that they could make even more money off the poisoned, ignorant, obese, sick, trusting public, it was really easy to walk away from sticky-buns and soda. When I walk by the cereal isle in the store I no longer see breakfast food, I see scheming greedy bastards licking their chops, selling 5 cents worth of puffed wheat for 4 dollars a box to a bunch of obese kids and parents who just don't know any better, because no one has told them that the cartoon rabbit on the box is a lying piece of shit trying to take their dollars away from them.
Sugar is addictive, MSG is a neurotoxin, oxidized vegetable oil is poison, I'm a sucker paying top dollar to eat industrial waste.
Not anymore. I snap bones and suck out marrow because I hate the snake oil salesman pushing the post-workout powder. I eat mostly raw liver and laugh my ass off because the sugar barons don't get to harvest my dollars. I put medium rare kidney on a bed of homemade kraut and suck down the juice so the drug companies don't profit on my disease. I boil bones and feet in a pot for 2 days and drink it straight to spite the industry that tries to tell me I need to buy their pills and supportive shoes and lumbar support seats and sunscreen and fat burning drinks. I eat sheep fat by the handful and watch people slamming down Monster drinks, because they have 'energy'.
I am a man. I am not a crop. I will not be harvested. I will eat every part of everything that moves. I will not pay to be poisoned.

I've seen some of the things folk do with egg shells, some throw them away, some eat them like crackers, or grind them up and mix with lemon juice or crush them up and put them in coffee. Has anyone tried putting them in with some bone broth. If you're looking for calcium and minerals and such it seems that treating them like bones, in a crockpot with some vinegar, would be the way to go. Anybody tried this, or shall I let you all know in a day or 2?

Life aint all fun. I think that just like being comfortable all the time will make you a weak flabby pansy, feeling good when you wouldn't normally, naturally feel good (without chemical stimulants, made by your brain or imported) will probably leave you mentally weak and flabby, and a mental pansy. You need a balance of hard times and misery and good times and fun, because thats what real life is made of, good times and shit times. So don't try to cheat life.

Also you know how taking pain meds only cover up the problem, they won't fix it? Then you don't think your hurt and usually wind up injuring yourself even more because pain never told you to stop, that you were broken, because you shut it up with some dope. Well I think the same goes for feeling good with chemical assistance, even if those chemicals come from your own head when you do something known to illicit an endorphin response, like hardass workouts or ice baths or whatever. Those endorphins just cover up whatever is actually going on with your emotions. They are just like pain meds, they cover things up. Treat the problem, try to not do things you hate, that way you won't need a 'fix' to feel good. If your life is so miserable that you 'need' a fix to make you happy, to make life worth living, you might try changing your life so that it doesn't piss you off so much, instead of applying 'pain meds' to a problem you never treat.
Sometimes you just declare to the world "I'm grumpy, stay outta my way!" It usually will.

Marrow bone for all the minerals in the bone, and the great marrow taste, and the foot provides all the collagen you could ever want, it will be solid, thick jello if you add a foot, I promise. Tastes better too. I don't add spices until about an hour before I turn it off, then I let it cool until I can handle it. Seems to work best that way, I can fish out the chunks of basil and parsley before they fall apart like they will if they've been in there for a day. But that's just how I do it. Add more feet. Chicken or turkey feet if you can't find beef feet, they don't need to be in nearly as long as beef feet, 8 hours or so will do them pretty well.

Beef feet in beef stew, chicken feet in chicken soup. I compared, beef stew with stew bones but no feet, and then a batch with a whole foot thrown in. The foot stew was much tastier, thicker, and I ate it like a wild man, unable to stop, while I was able to remain a bit civilized eating the no-foot stew. It sets up solid like chilled bone broth. Throw everything in a crockpot and simmer for 12ish hours, perfect every time. The secret is more feet. Pigs must be a truly magical creature to produce such tasty stuff.

My go to everyday food has gotta be bone broth. Of all the things that paleo eating has added to my diet, bone broth is the best. When I started eating this way mostly what I did was to eliminate garbage, all the SAD foods. Things were added slowly, more organs at first, then fancy eggs and chickens and grassfed beef, and now even more organs, but the best thing I've added is bone broth, so tasty, and it has just about everything I need to build a skeleton, and I sure do like a nice skeleton.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/88740/paleo-friendly-ways-to-quit-smoking/88763#88763Answer by Grover for Paleo Friendly Ways to Quit SmokingGrover2012-01-08T18:16:54Z2012-01-08T18:16:54Z
First you have to really hate it. You have to hate it more than anything, every time you walk in to buy a pack think about how the folk that make that are overcharging you, and giving you something that is guaranteed to kill you. They are lying to you to take your dollars and they give you cancer as a thank you. Think about the sublet marketing and advertising aimed specifically at killing you with nicotine, think about the super rich fatass laughing it up when he thinks about all the suckers he sells his poison to. Think about what kind of person would willingly get in line to become addicted to a poison, and you'll figure out pretty quick that you are not that kind of person.
I tried to quit a few times, willpower isn't the answer, because willpower will always fail. Willpower is for short term efforts, use will power to avoid buying the pack while you are in the store, but don't rely on it to keep you strong during the constant craving period.
And keep repeating this, always, "IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT I WANT, THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS WHAT I DECIDE"
That chant, and the anger I felt at those bastards looking me dead in the eye and charging $5 for a pack of poison is what kept me off lady nicotine long enough that it became habit.
The first few weeks are a bit rough, but everyday is a victory and you can proudly give the finger to the tobacco barons, and that feels better than smoking. Replace the habit with a victory dance.

Mother does make variety, I'm tall and fairly lean, my friend is short, thick, barrel chested and heavily muscled. I'm better at running, he's better at beating the hell out of whole groups of men twice his size. Each 'body type' will have its ups and downs. Figure out what the advantages that come with your skeleton type are, and go with that. My friend will have to try way harder than I will to run a marathon, his legs are too short and big around and he weighs 215 at 5'7", very little body fat. I have to try harder than he does to stay warm in the winter at 6'2" and 180, I don't conserve heat as well as he does. Your physical shape will give you advantages in some areas, and drawbacks in others, no way around that. Go with what your going to be good at, 'don't judge a fish by its ability to climb trees' as I believe Einstein said. Don't judge yourself against others, you are a key that will perfectly fit a lock somewhere, go find it.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/73414/end-of-the-world-scenario-anybody/86449#86449Answer by Grover for End of the world scenario anybody?Grover2011-12-29T18:09:31Z2011-12-29T18:09:31Z
Ok, here's how it's going down. The U.S. presidential election is coming up in November, right now democrats and republicans seem to get along worse than they ever have, and a brilliant court ruling says that folk can make anonymous donations to campaigns for unlimited amounts of dollars. So what's going to happen is someone is going to cheat. They're going to take those unlimited funds, that could be donated by anyone in the world, and try to buy the election, and it's going to work. For a few weeks anyway, then someone will figure out what happened and call shenanigans on the cheating bastards. The cheating bastards will deny it, even though it will become really obvious, and the other side will scream like hell and try to call the election unfair and take the cheater out and put their guy in. At this point the Federal gov will stop working as they have their little power struggle, confidence in the U.S. will be shaken/ruined which will be the last bullet in the head of our stupid economy, markets will crash, money will quickly begin to be worthless. Our crashing economy and worthless money will wreck things all over the world, dragging other economies down into the gutter with us, once all the other economies start to go down, ours will go down faster, which will make theirs go down faster. People will panic when their money is worthless, this panic combined with no federal government will scramble the rest of our little society up good, once some folk stop doing their jobs, society becomes less efficient and this only speeds up all the other nasty things going on. Frantic irrational people will raid the stores, food supplies will be used up in about 6 weeks. The supplies could last much longer if people wouldn't take more than they can store, but they will, once the electrical power gets unreliable most of the food will rot before its eaten. So now were down to hunting, farming and robing. As food in cities runs low, people will begin to move, and road crews will form. These road crews will be on all roads in and out of cities and will be made of the stupidest, most violent militant fools your town has to offer. So watch out for them. Hunting will only be good for about 6 months, by then all the large animals will have been hunted to extinction or really close to it. Again, they could last much longer but most folk don't know how to preserve meat, so they'll have to hunt more than they would really need to. So now we have run out of store food, and have hunted out all the large animals, road crews at this point will be the first to switch to eating people, but everyone else will follow shortly after. This will continue until the population of the world is down to a small enough number that people can wander around for weeks at a time without seeing anyone else. 500 million worldwide or so. Probably less. People will be grouped around the coasts, pretty much back to square one.
Here's the fun part. The election that starts all this is in November, it'll take a few weeks for the cheating to become obvious enough to cause a major divide, and maybe another week or two to really cause big trouble for the world economy, putting the date for this end of the world scenario right about the end of december, which lines up nicely with the old Mayan end of the world date. So if there's a big surprise this election, you'd be best to get some good friends, and set up camp on a remote section of a well traveled road, so you can start robing them poor pilgrims as they flee their starving town. Cheers

I was in the same boat for a while pulling 18+ hour days as an iron worker, rundown and generally miserable and mad as hell at damn near everything. Food is the easy part, just eat alot more of whatever you already eat, assuming its mostly good stuff. Alot more, no half steps, if you work like a beast you must eat like one. Try throwing half a dozen eggs ontop of your normal breakfast, and cook'em in a nice thick slab of butter. Do the same for dinner, then go to sleep. Eat big chunks of liver too, every other day for a while, then maybe cut back to twice a week. A few weeks of that should put you back in fightin shape, I know the sleep part is tricky, but thats the only time your body will heal and recover. Dont be a tough guy, take a nap.

So I tried a new approach, I did really easy workouts, just a few push/pull ups, and slept about 10 hours a night. Most days I didnt do anything, it was great. I droped 8-9 pounds of fat, and saw wild improvements in the number of push/pulls us I was doing, probably in part due to a few less pounds, but muscles started showin up all over, and I didnt do anything to earn them. I didnt run, or do any ab work, or work out for more than 10 minutes at a time. Before this lazy approach, I was doing hardass workouts and training for a marathon, as soon as I slowed down, I saw improvements, big ones. If you've been doing hard workouts for a while, take two weeks off and do really easy ones, you wont drop any gains in that amount of time, and your overworked body will rest and get strong. So sleep more, do less, and watch what happens. I bet you'll see improvements in everything after about 2 weeks. Its usually best to do 1 easy week a month, helps prevent injury and is a chance to heal, but if you've been in hardass mode, I know how hard it can be to go easy, but its gonna be the best thing for you.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/68979/neoteny-pedomorphism-domesticated-humans/69008#69008Answer by Grover for Neoteny, Pedomorphism, "Domesticated" Humans?Grover2011-10-07T05:56:04Z2011-10-07T05:56:04Z
Retaining juvenile traits into adulthood is called Neoteny, and we've got alot of that going on, it seems to be mostly about sexual selection. We like girls with a 'cute' little nose, and eyes that are big compaired with the eye to head ratio of adults, and a whole list of other features that are present in infants. Thats why everyone thinks puppys are cute, big eyes, little snouts, that look where they tilt their little heads over sideways, mammals are programed to resopond to those visual cues in a protective manner. The "I'll take care of you little guy, poor thing cant even keep its head on striaght" response. But humans, mostly girls, will do that same head to the side, big eyes look when flirting or begging dad for the car keys, and it works on dad better than on mom because he is programmed to respond to cues like that and mom knows what game is being played and is harder to fool. Since humans have the longest juvenile stage of any animal in the world, it makes sense that we may have a double dose of neotenic features in adults. And I dont mean to pick on the girls, but those are the first examples that jump to mind when i think of juvenile features held to adulthood. But as for selecting for tameness, I'm not so sure thats really what we do. Some of the first, and from a repoductive standpoint, most successful 'working together' attmepts were made be men killing and raping people. I'm thinking Genhis Khan on this one, 1 in 20 men in Asia are his desendants. He was a first class jackass but natural selection rewarded his efforts with more kids than anyone else has probably ever had. We see the same 'working together' in gangs of male chimps when they hunt and kill and eat their chimp neighbors. Its not a very nice thing to do, but they get a good meal of protein and fat and those things in large doses over time are probably what enabled us to grow such giant brains. It doesn't always pay to be a nice 'tame' guy.
And usually the age at which women give birth is direclty related to the avilability of birth control, folk in really poor countries get on the nest earlier because the have little or no access to birthcontrol. More education and birthcontrol have always led to fewer children per year and the first child being born a bit later in the womans life. As far as I know.

One of the few things that I can get away with is a paleo attitude, 'try as hard as you can untill you win or die, then stop trying and go to sleep.' I noticed that this is the way my dog goes about life, and he seems wonderfully happy and really fit, so I gave it a whirl, and it works out great. Eat organs and meat and try as hard as you possibly can, be a scary caveman or cavelady and see what happens.

What can I eat this weekend?Grover2011-09-28T22:38:59Z2011-09-28T22:38:59Z
I just had that done, it's no fun by the way, no fun at all. Go for coconut milk, spice it up with cinnamon, I normally chill it a bit, but you are not going to want to have cold things in your mouth for a while. Live on that for day one, mostly all your going to do is sleep that day anyway. Day two go for more coconut milk and a well smashed sweet potato and to hell with everybody who says 'thats not paleo' and gets all snooty about it, a potato wont kill you. I was foolish enough to try asparagus on day two, cooked in some butter, but it was just awful flushing the chunks out of the giant holes in the of my mouth. Skip asparagus. Day three anything goes, but it goes slowly and carefully. Eggs, sausage, liver, soft and room temperature is the key. Good luck. Plan on feeling worthless for about 3 days longer than you expect, the nurse will tell you something like "you'll be ok in 3 days" and they're right, you'll be 'ok' you probably wont be 100% for about twice that. Its a neat way they have of lying to you, just alittle.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/64596/paleo-for-intensity-vs-stamina/64608#64608Answer by Grover for Paleo for Intensity vs StaminaGrover2011-09-13T16:25:41Z2011-09-13T16:25:41Z
Carbs are good for high intensity workouts, it takes less O2 to burn carbs than fat, so they work well when O2 is going to be in short supply, such as during a very intense workout. But your body can only store about 2,000 calories worth of carbs in your liver and muscles, thats all you can hold, on average. Of course if you train alot you may be able to increase that number a bit, but generally your 'carb gas tank' is limited, and tiny. So if you eat 5 huge bowls of pasta, once your 'carb gas tank' is full, the rest gets stored as fat. Typically the cells in your body burn a mix of fat and carbs, this mix will vary according to how much enegry is need at the time. At low intensity, like walking around, sitting, driving....all the times whey you are not working so hard it feels like your heart is going to blow out, you burn way more fat than carbs. This is because your body, even if you have very low bodyfat%, will have tens of thousands of calories stored as fat that you can burn as enegry. Heres the math on that one, you can figure body fat % with a tape measure and be sort of in the ballpark of how many pounds of fat you've got, there are 453.6 grams per pound, and 9 calories per gram. So it makes sense to burn more of the thing you have the most of, and conserve that which you have little of. You are an active person, but there is no way you spend the bulk of your time at intensities high enough to be burning more carbs than fats, it just isn't possible. So you dont really have to eat many carbs to top off your carb gas tank, and alot of the carbs you eat will wind up as fat anyhow on account of bloodsugar spikes and then the insulin spike that will store everthing as fat if you need it to or not.
Marathon runners dont really eat for stamina, they train for it. Sprinters train for intensity. These activites require the body to burn different mixes of fat/carbs. The marathon runner would be better off to run at an intensity that burns more fat than carbs, so he/she will never run out of enegry, and the sprinter runs so damn fast that they will burn mostly carbs, but they only run 100 meters or so and that intensity, so you wouldnt need 5 huge bowls of pasta to refill the tank. You'd be better off to eat a few carbs, more good protein (not in shake form) and get most of your calories from fat, because thats what you burn more of anyway, and the more fat you eat, the more fat you will burn, which means you burn fewer carbs and conserve your tiny carb gas tank even more. This also means that all the protein you eat wont be used as enegry, it'll be used to build you some new muscles, and repair the old ones. Tuns out your body is just plain better at processing protein and fat than it is at processing carbs, less enegry is wasted and more muscle is grown, and thats what you need for stamina or intensity.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/62005/do-you-use-willpower-to-stay-paleo/62332#62332Answer by Grover for Do you use WILLPOWER to stay Paleo?Grover2011-09-02T14:49:22Z2011-09-02T14:49:22Z
I think of willpower like a muscle, it can be strong, sometimes very strong, but at some point it will ALWAYS get tired and give out. Muscle alone cannot carry me around, walking, standing, running, and such, all day long. Muscles are not strong enough, but what they can do is hold my bones in place, so those bones, the solid structure of my body, carry most all the weight. This is the role of willpower, it cannot uphold your entire life for very long, but it can hold the 'bones' in place, use willpower to keep the real, solid, structure of life in place. That structure must be a complete, sustainable philosophy that pays you in positive feedback so that it can become habit. Most folk dont need to work on willpower, they need new bones.

Then I stuff it in the jar and really get after it with the wooden handle again, smash the hell out of it, really gets the juice flowing that way and you can pack it really tightly. The brine level always seems to sink, not much below the top of the cabbage, but a bit. I just take the top 1/2 inch of cabbage off and eat the juicy stuff. http://paleohacks.com/questions/107248/confession-time-what-did-you-used-to-eat-that-you-thought-was-healthy-pre-paleo/107328#107328Comment by GroverGrover2012-03-26T17:02:17Z2012-03-26T17:02:17ZI had mountains of Kashai cereal for breakfast in my iron worker days, thought I was hot stuff too. Wrong. Halfway through the bag I read the ingreidents and the last one on there sounded like something you'd build a terminator out of. I gave up on food with ingreidents 6 months before I ever heard of 'paleo', and since hearing of paleo, I modified my old plan a bit to include more organs and higher quality meat.As Dave S pointed out, this is a question aimed at sneaky ingreidents, like the ones hidden in my mixed nuts or coconut milk, things I dont already know are badhttp://paleohacks.com/questions/74244/sneaky-ingredients-to-avoid/74316#74316Comment by GroverGrover2011-11-02T16:09:35Z2011-11-02T16:09:35ZDidn't know yeast extract was MSG, those sneaky bastards.
