I bought some dandelion greens yesterday and I can't seem to figure out what to do with them. Chopped them up in salad, way too bitter - borderline unpalatable. Steamed with some cranberries and tallow, still bitter. Sub bacon fat, or coconut oil, add sweeter fruit, still not doing it. Are they supposed to be this bitter?

http://paleohacks.com/questions/74093/it-it-possible-to-overconsume-fermented-foodsIt it possible to overconsume fermented foods?Matt B2011-11-01T16:39:30Z2013-03-05T19:45:23Z

Since delving into Michael Allen Smith's CriticalMAS blog, and some posts at Seth Roberts' blog, I've started incorporating more fermented foods into my diet. Previously I would take a lactobacillus supplement daily, with occasional yogurt or sauerkraut. Now, I'm drinking Apple Cider Vinegar-laced seltzer, kombucha, and kefir daily. I find myself fantasizing about miso soup.

Is this my body telling me it's been missing these foods all along? Or am I developing an addiction that I need to pull back from?

http://paleohacks.com/questions/110808/hack-this-cleanse-clean-alejandro-jungerHack this cleanse - Clean/Alejandro JungerMatt B2012-04-09T15:58:25Z2013-02-05T15:32:23Z

I'm considering a cleanse called "Clean" - Alejandro Junger's book. My wife got sold on it on the Dr Oz show a few weeks back, and wants me to join her. it seems like it might help with any lingering leaky gut issues, and kick a few pounds away. The claim is that through limited solid food (but reasonable nutrition) you help your digestive system take a break, while you go on an elimination diet. Digestion break ==> better liver function/toxin removal. What do you think? Here are the basics, with my commentary:

Elimination diet for a few days prior: excludes all major allergens, sugar, high sugar fruits, nightshades.

Liquid meals for breakfast and dinner: fruit/veg smoothies with some protein powder, soups. At least 12h fast between dinner and breakfast, except for 2T of olive oil (seth roberts style). Some of the smoothies have avocado, almond butter (odd; an allergen), most are just a variety of fruits and vegetables. Soups are usually squash based.
- Seems reasonable to aid in digestion. I will probably be hungry.

solid meal for lunch - eat off of the elimination diet menu: Chicken and rice, Fish and quinoa or squash, lamb, mint and veg. No beef - "too hard to digest"
- No issues here except that I don't buy that my grass fed ground beef is harder to digest than the lamb chops he recommends. I'll do this but I will have some beef meals.

Alsnacks are OK, but first make sure you are truly hungry. Use this experience to push your limits and determine what true hunger is
- I could really stand to do this - I eat at the first hunger pang quite often, I could probably be in a lot better touch with myself here.

fiber supplement, liver enzyme, 2qts water/day, herbal tea/yerba mate OK
- Never big on taking fiber supplements, his goal is to get you to flush your colon though. I will probably limit this, maybe just take more of the prebioitc inulin supplement that I favor, over the psyllium husks he recommends. I know nothing about these liver enzymes.

Eliminate as many toxins as you can - clean water supply, reduce chemicals.
air filter
- I could stand to clean up my chemical use and will pick up a natural shampoo and eliminate hair gel.

What do you think? Worthwhile 3 weeks of my life?

http://paleohacks.com/questions/94556/hack-my-occasional-arrhythmiaHack my occasional arrhythmia.Matt B2012-02-01T21:17:32Z2012-09-19T21:56:25Z

Several years ago, I noticed an occasional arrhythmia. My heart would beat fast (~150bpm) for 5-10 beats, then slow for a couple of beats to catch up, then back to the usual 50-80bpm. It typically occurs when I lie down. I went to a cardiologist, who ran an ECG and found no abnormal beats during exercise, and said that the average person can have several abnormal beats per day (I think he said 240) and still be considered normal.

I still occasionally have this issue -- is it OK? Should I seek a second opinion?

It occurs more typically if I have late day caffeine. It only occurs at night, and only occurs when I'm lying down (usually right when I lie down).

http://paleohacks.com/questions/107534/how-bad-is-irradiated-food/107745#107745Answer by Matt B for How bad is irradiated food?Matt B2012-03-27T13:29:45Z2012-03-27T13:29:45Z
I'm reading Joel Salatin's latest book right now (Folks, this ain't normal), and he addresses how unwise it is to fix a problem that technology created by using more technology. Less technology is what is required - in this case returning to pastured meat to reduce the risk of the pathogens the irradiation kills. I refuse to buy irradiated meat. I fear the slippery slope -- today, a small percentage of ground beef is irradiated. Soon, more and more will be. How much? I see parallels to pasteurized milk, where years down the line it may be considered abnormal (illegal?) to eat non-irradiated meat. Then the health problems of the radiation take hold.

Last year was 4' x 8' ... just dug out 2' to double the size during the recent warm weather here in Pennsylvania. We mix in a few bags of organic garden soil every spring, and we just got a juicer so I've been saving some of the pulp and tossing that in one little spot a foot down, to try to compost it. Haven't checked on it lately, I wonder how it is doing.

Any time I'm doing any non-food planting, and I stumble across a few worms, I toss them in the food garden.

We plant a few rows of carrots from seed, some tomato and pepper plants, some squash or cukes, some horseradish, and in a completely separate area (learned our lesson last year) some sweet potatoes.

When I am on paleohacks.com, a brown banner appears at the top which says 'Welcome to Paleo Hacks.com! Visit your user page to fill out your profile.

The words 'user page' are linked, to my user page. Great - I do agree I could flesh that out a little more.

However, 'Hacks.com' is also a link, which attempts to go to hacks.com, and then gets rerouted somehow to a site called yeah.com. None of this is any good. Recommend changing whatever auto-link settings are creating this 'hacks.com' link, or coding in a link to paleohacks.com and removing the space from the banner.

It can't possibly be worth it to use and then discard all that healthy fat. Lard has a smoke point of 375F so you'd possibly be OK to reuse but that would be a vast quantity of fat. Most turkey fryers require 12 quarts (48 cups) of fat. At 1849 calories/cup = almost 100K calories to potentially re-use, so if it's gone bad you'll possibly do some damage.

I can get pastured lard for $5/qt, or supermarket lard for $3/qt. So it's a $40-60 investment. I'd rather invest $50 in a pastured turkey and do the bacon fat lattice myself!
