Adding fats - I cook all my veg in fats (ghee, coconut oil, animal fats), buy fatty cuts of meat (marbled ground meat, skin-on chicken thighs) and add foods like bacon, avocado and olives to my meals. If you tolerate nuts they are another high-fat source.

I figured since a number of people on here have IBS you might have some treatment ideas for me. I think I ate too much fat yesterday, as my stool was looser today and my colon squeezed into the all-familiar spasm (upper right side) that typically sticks around for the next 24 hours. What are some ideas/meds/tips and tricks to relax that spasm. I usually do any of the following:

-epsom salt bath
-massage
-rub in Musclecare cream
-if it's horrifically bad, take 1/2 an Immodium, but that just makes me constipated the next day and doesn't even help the spasm all that much

Is there anything else I can try besides just waiting it out. I was really hoping to go out tonight!

Hi there, I have IBS and anxiety. Doctor just tried me on a low dose of Zoloft (sertraline, an SSRI) for the anxiety, but it's making me extremely constipated. He said to give it 2 weeks for side effects to subside, but I'm on day 9 and wondering if I should bother continuing if this is how my body reacts to this drug. Because of my IBS and sensitivity to trapped gas, constipation is pretty much the worst side effect possible for me. I am barely sleeping because of discomfort. I have boosted my Natural Calm, to no avail.

I'm not looking for suggestions about treating constipation, but more like, does anyone know if a side effect like that is indicative of how I react to this drug generally (in which case I'll stop taking it), or could it actually go away in two weeks?

- maintain weight

What are your fears when it comes to health and fitness? That despite eating paleo...
- I will never manage my IBS, which is the single biggest killer to my quality of life

I'm in a new job that involves a lot of all-day meetings with catered lunches. I'm new to the role and it's a corporate environment so I'm trying to 'fit in'. But I am really sensitive to, well, everything, but especially garlic & onion, and it seems like I end up doubled over with gas pain after every one of these lunches. I try to be so careful but I suspect the buffet standards like chicken and salmon are usually seasoned with garlic. And then I'm sitting in meetings the rest of the afternoon, so the gas just doesn't pass. I have not passed any gas in the last 8 hours since I ate lunch and I am not having fun.

I chew fennel seeds after I eat (keep in my purse, don't seem to do a thing) and drink peppermint tea. I never noticed much of a difference Beano but thinking I should just buy it again and take it anyway. Is there any brand of digestive enzyme that really helps with FODMAPS? It's one thing to avoid eating them when I'm cooking for myself, but I don't how to avoid these corporate lunches and they are killing me, man.

"You may have seen the WSJ piece today on a study claiming vegetarians live longer than meat-eaters. Those studies are notoriously confounded by the 'healthy user effect' (i.e. since meat has been viewed as 'bad' for the past few decades, vegetarians are more likely to avoid other behaviors perceived as unhealthy, like smoking, lack of physical activity, etc.)

A much better study would compare lifespan amongst vegetarians and omnivores that are all health-conscious, since that would reduce the influence of this healthy user effect. Fortunately, that study has been done. Researchers compared 11,000 vegetarians and omnivores that shop at health food stores. They found that both groups lived longer than the general population, but that there was no difference in lifespan between the omnivores and vegetarians.

So the next time someone links to a study claiming that vegetarians live longer than meat-eaters, you can send them this one: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8842068 "

By ground meats I mean ground-up lamb, beef, elk, bison, turkey or chicken. The white meats, with some sage and thyme in them are kinda like having scrambled eggs for breakfast. Just mild and easy. I'll often eat them over spaghetti squash. They are simple and fast to cook and you can make big batches for the week.

http://paleohacks.com/questions/170837/launching-a-paleo-restaurant-why-notLaunching a Paleo Restaurant - why not?Renee2013-01-04T18:18:14Z2013-06-03T00:59:52Z

Hi there, I'm toying with the idea of launching a paleo cafe/deli or resto in downtown Toronto. Just bouncing ideas around at this point with a chef friend. What I'm trying to figure out is whether the demand is there. In mind my, there have got to be many health-minded urban profesionals/hipsters who want to eat this way but, like me, often lack the time or inclination to make bone broth, ferment veggies, slow-cook stews, etc. Imagine a place where you could take away a quart of low-FODMAP broth or offal stew, or order a steak and veg knowing no grain oils were used to cook them them. Or grab a coffee with coconut milk and a Paleo baked good in the afternoon.

To me, there is obvious demand and no supply - at least in Toronto there is no 100% Paleo/ancestral restaurant. So as I see it, it's a no brainer. Any thoughts on this? Will demand wane over time? Will the profit margin be too slim (although I'm not adverse to serving booze at dinner)? Is anyone who opens a restaurant a fool no matter what they are serving?

Send me your thoughts!

http://paleohacks.com/questions/92048/blastocystis-hominis-be-gone-edit-with-an-update-and-new-questionblastocystis hominis be gone! (edit with an update and new question)Renee2012-01-22T23:33:31Z2013-05-22T16:47:12Z

Hi all, this isn't a strictly Paleo question but since you all know so much about colonic health, I thought you may have some insights. I've had IBS for 15 years - onset corresponded with anorexia at age 20. Done lots of testing and treatments for it, but still really struggling.

Stool tests in 2006 and just recently in November 2011 showed the presence of a parasite, blastocystis hominis. Which apparently lots of people are walking around with and which may or may not be symptom-causing. Since otherwise my bacterial profile isn't too bad (low in a few good ones, but no bad ones), my naturopath figures it's worthwhile to try to eradicate the b.hominis to see if that improves my IBS.

He prescribed a herbal mix consisting of: black walnut hulls, paracress, usnea, oregon grape, white atractylodes and licorice, along with 4 drops oregano oil twice a day. 2 hours apart from when I take my probiotic. This was back in December right before Xmas vacation, I was super stressed at work which always worsens my gut, and also I think oregano oil is just too strong for me - my gut felt super irritated, I was constipated but the stools I did have were liquid, so I quit both the herbal tincture and the oregano oil for a while so I would be in better shape for my vacation.

Well, now I'm back to wanting to get rid of this parasite. I'm not seeing the naturopath right now (long story), but wondering if I should go back to taking JUST the black walnut tincture. Is that enough to get rid of b.hominis? Anything else I should try? A previous naturopath gave me something called Artestatin for it, but clearly it didn't work since that was in 2008 and I still have nasty critter.

UPDATE: I am still taking these herbs from my naturopath, but the more I read about b.hominis, the more I'm reading that herbs don't work. In fact it seems most treatments don't work. My gastroenterologist wants me to do 14 days on Flagyl (metronizadole) but what I've read suggests it's not very effective - less that 30%. And it's a strong antibiotic so may do more damage than good. The drugs that seem more effective are not available in Canada. But maybe Flagyl is not so bad and I need to stop getting all my medical advice from scary internet sites. IF ANYONE HAS ANY RESOURCES/EXPERIENCE with B.HOMINIS and the BEST TREATMENTS FOR IT, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

I find epsom salt baths helpful for easing the colon spasm I get with IBS. For obvious reasons I don't take baths in the summer - way too warm in my apartment as it is. So I figure a cream I could rub on my abdomen would be a good substitute. I googled "magnesium topical cream" and they clearly exist, but can anyone recommend a brand?
Ok, this is a bit of a rant, but I'm mad at myself/the world right now. I feel like I got duped by Paleo into the belief that my IBS could be resolved by changing my diet. For years, I'd been told/read that IBS was largely tied to emotions, the nervous system, stress etc. Then Paleo came along, with all these stories of IBS recovery by eliminating/adding certain foods, and I actually felt hopeful. Well, it's been a couple years now and I honestly can say I feel no improvement (and I was eating pretty close to Paleo before learning about Paleo anyway, it's been 17 years since I ate SAD). And i'm just feeling very scared because NOTHING helps. I know I have anxiety, and I feel that in my gut. I might be starting on trazodone this week, after a year on cipralex which just gave me a bunch of side effecs and didn't really help. And I hate that this comes down to me pinning my hopes on the next drug.

I'm also so confused by the advice in the Paleosphere telling me to eliminate starchy carbs/eliminate insoluble fibre and increase starchy carbs/eliminate both etc. I'm just beyond confused. I'm pretty sure I don't have SIBO (tested negative in the past) but everythng makes me bloat. But I am starting to suspect it's more about the state of my gut when I sit down to a meal. I.e. not relaxed.

Is there anyone else out there who found that diet didn't help their IBS, that it took meditation or yoga or some other big mind-altering life-changing practice to get their guts to function (both of which I've tried, but don't keep up a regular practice.) Also, any thoughts on trazodone?

Sorry this is all over the place, just feeling so freaking FED UP and desperate and sad.

Why is it that I can eat cucumber, but even eating 1/2 a Bubbie's pickle gives me painful gas? Is it (a) the increased probiotics (even though other sources of probiotics don't bug me, like kefir), or (b) the fact that the brine contains garlic (which is tough for me, but it's not like I'm eating raw cloves of garlic, it's just in the brine.) Or (c) something else I'm not thinking of? Anyone else have issues with pickles?

PS I have IBS and am very gas-prone.
