Does So Delicious ice cream make anyone else gassy?

I thought this might be an isolated incident but several times I've had So Delcious ice cream make me quite gassy. We've had several different flavors in the past few weeks--vanilla bean, chocolate and mint chocolate chip--all with the same results.

Can this be isolated to one particular ingredient? The vanilla bean flavor has the following: organic coconut milk, organic coconut cream, guar gum, organic agave syrup, chicory root extract, carob bean gum, vanilla extract, natural flavor, vanilla bean specks.

I'm also wondering if I'm alone with this issue. I've been pretty strict paleo the past few months and this is the only "safe" food product that has given me this problem.

Chicory root fiber gives me issues also. I once made the mistake of buying 10 protein bars that had this as an ingredient as back up food for a trip overseas, and it took me days to figure out why my stomach had bloated so much I looked pregnant.

I had this ice cream last night and today (the no-sugar chocolate version), and indeed today I had gas all day. However, I found this recipe to make my own ice cream, so I might just try that instead of buying the industrialized one: http://paleodietlifestyle.com/paleo-coconut-vanilla-ice-cream/

Coconut solids are the more likely culprit. It could be the agave by itself. I only have trouble with FODMAPS if I eat too much of them.

I don't think so. I drink a lot of coconut milk and wouldn't that give me gas as well?

No, I've had agave in my coffee with no prior issues. I wonder about the guar and carob bean gums though.

The chicory root, guar gum and carob bean gum can all be to blame. In my experience these gums cause digestive issues.

Which version of "strict Paleo" has insulin-spike-triggering organic agave syrup on its acceptable list? By any chance, are Reese's peanut butter cups and jelly beans also on that list?

Yes. This has been covered before. The guar gum is what does it. There is another brand- I think it is called Coconut Bliss, that uses much less guar gum- which they apologetically mention on their label. I don't notice gas with it.

i make paleo ice cream. 2 bananas, a big splash of silk coconut milk, two tablespoons of coconut oil, teaspoon of honey and a heap of chocolate powder that is just ground cocoa beans. i warm eveything till the cocconut oil melts, blend , then freeze. i dont put gas in mine at all.

It's definitely the chicory root fiber! I've also had fiber one bars with chicory root as the first ingredient and it's given me the same side effects. Making me feel extremely uncomfortable and gassy. After eating the So Delicious Chocolate flavor, I was so uncomfortable and bloated, I couldn't even sleep that night. I stay clear away from that brand. I 100% know its from the root because I've made my own coconut ice cream with coconut milk and agave before and it does not give me any side effects.

I remember many past lives as a paleolithic hombre where we would hang out eating ice-cream. Glad this tradition got passed down.

Well agave syrup is pretty much fructose isn't it? Any chance that's your culprit?

Yes, I had the same gassy side effect (just ask my husband - ha ha!); I had some of the no sugar added Mint Chocolate Chip flavor (great flavor, but it has a mild after taste), and a few hours later I noticed a lot of gas; maybe try Coconut Bliss or make your own.

Yeah, it's the fiber/thickeners they add. But on a worse note, they seem to be using Agave Nectar which is very very high in fructose, so thumbs down on this stuff. If you eat it right after a fasted workout where you've depleted your glycogen, it's fine (except for the gas), but otherwise, stay away.

OMG yes I only ate 1/5 a pint and got blooting and then hours of throwing up and diarrhea. I had to make sure to keep dehydrated to stop headaches. Next day and my stomach is still weak. I saw a handful of others get sick from various brands of coconut milk ice cream. I had the "So Delicious" coconut milk chocolate ice cream. They should have a warning label. I usually can eat anything.

Chicory root is a inulin fiber and too much can cause gas and other digestive discomfort.

I didn't know what was giving me gas and stomach cramps. My doctor suspected the coconut milk creamer. By the process of elimination, that's exactly what it was. I do have 9 food allergies, so I'm not sure why the gas. However, I'm giving all of mine away and will only use rice milk (as I used to), as I am alergic to casein in milk.
