Shortness of breath and congestion immediately after eating wheat?

I've been paleo for two and a half years, and "on the wagon", so to speak, for a few months now -- every so often I'll pick up a candy bar or have some soy-sauce-free sushi or something as part of my 20%, but no wheat that I'm aware of for at least that long. I've never been especially sensitive to wheat, and from what I've seen on Paleohacks, sensitivity usually manifests as gastrointestinal distress or joint aches, things like that.

Tonight I was making soup and I thought it'd be nice to have some garlic bread to go along with it. Just the once. I ate a couple pieces and immediately I had both shortness of breath and sinus congestion/a runny nose.

What the hell, you guys? This happened late last year when I ate some pizza, too, but I didn't connect the dots until today.

My question is, what the hell is causing this? Is it an allergy? I understand that generally those of us who don't/didn't have problems with gluten or wheat have adapted to tolerate it, and that removing the wheat will often result in a decreased tolerance... my question is about the symptoms in particular. Do these specific things happen to anyone else? And what could be causing them?

No more wheat for me....

It actually does sound like GERD, particularly since caffeine has the same shortness-of-breath effect. I'll look into this too, thank you!

Thank you! I'll visit the doctor the moment I have health insurance again, and stay away from wheat in the meantime.

Sounds actually like GERD.

And because of the irritation to your esophagus, mucous production is increased as a defense.

That sounds like a true allergy. I would make an appointment with your doctor. Shortness of breath is not something to mess with.

If you have been off wheat for quite a while, and you now have symptoms (mild allergic symptoms) you probably have become more gluten sensitive and less "leaky gut" impaired. Wheat-sensitivity not related to celiac disease is not uncommon and I speak from personal experience. It is easy to research on-line. You obviously have antibodies to wheat and your reaction to gluten could theoretically increase with more exposure. After a few more episodes as you describe, I would quit if I were you. Anaphylaxis can be severe and life-threatening should it go that far.

I had that problem, and was only dairy and gluten free at that time. I packed a clean low carb lunch to work overnight sitting in client room. I started eating a lot of coconut flakes/coconut yogurt and roasted soy nuts. I had shortness of breath and stuffy nose, some facial and forearm itching develop within the hour....I stopped eating them and was fine.

My son shows environmental allergies when he eats grain, my other gets rashes and dark eye circles when on dairy and grain. Different for everyone. I also got IBS a nd rosacia when I have grains and dairy.

Be happy your body is clean and sensitized! I get diarrhea if I eat processed food, nausea from chocolate.
