Totally depends on how long you cook it, how much was in each individual foot, etc. There really isn't a good way to standardize the measurements like processed food. Better to just have your broth every day and just trust your food.

According to many Paleo experts, we should aim for 1 gram of protein a day per body weight when trying to lose weight (fat not muscle). This is ALOT of protein. For example, one egg has 6-7 grams of protein and they are about 70 calories each. ... (more)

Keep in mind too, the idea is to consume .7 - 1.0 grams of protein for every pound of lean bodyweight. If I weigh 600 pounds (no, I don't, thankfully), that doesn't mean I have to eat 600 g of protein. It means I might calculate that I have 190... (more)

This question is to do with any measurment of what is in food: calories, fat, carbs, protein, vitamins or minerals. Many people seem to talk about how many grams of carbs they eat or their percentage of fat or type of fat. However few... (more)

I only used fitday because I was curious from a scientific perspective. Knowing an approx intake of macronutrients and regular nutrients allows me to check for any potential deficit in any one nutrient, like magnesium. It also allows me to better... (more)

Some paleo experts don't eat many carbs at all (ala Kurt Harris) while others eat 100-150 grams a day (ala Mark Sisson). I'm not at all convinced that eating around a 100g a day is bad, although it might not be necessary to eat a ton of... (more)

looking at my fitday, I'm a bit surprised to see that I'm actually shovelling down about 150 grams of carbs per day, at about 40 percent of my total intake. That's almost 100 percent non-starch vegetables, with an occasional piece of fruit. ... (more)

Your body is pretty good at dealing with both extremes (too much and too little) of protein. So it's not something to worry about too much. If you're trying to pack on the muscle, you'll want to have much more so that you have building blocks... (more)

I've started running again (and beat my record last Saturday), and runners need carbs, but I'm also trying to lean out, so how many grams of carbs per day should I aim for?

I am a runner! I find that sticking to 40/30/30 carbs/fat/protein suits me very well. It took me about a month to adjust when I started paleo because I was doing around 50-60% carbs before starting. I even sometimes go as low as 30 now with no... (more)

It's not just the carbs you eat, it's also protein. Protein is gluconeogenic and can be converted by our liver into glucose which will prevent you from going into ketosis. The only way to know for sure is to use a blood test, the ketostix are... (more)

OKay, so I am new to paleo, and I have scoured the boards but haven't seen an answer to this. According to Robb Wolf's getting started plan, you should eat approx. 4 meals/day, with each meal being based on approx 3-4 oz. of protein. Now, that... (more)

Protein requirements are largely overstated. A half pound of meat daily (two 4-ounce portions), plus your veggie load is enough for most everybody, that's in the ballpark of 80-90 grams protein (guesstimate: ~0.75 gram per lean bodyweight).

I assume your question is actually how much fat can you burn whilst in ketosis, as ketosis doesn't burn fat. Ketones are the byproduct of breaking fatty acids down to be burned. Take a look at the chart in this post by Ned... (more)

How are you guys able to measure how many grams of protein you are eating? I don't have a scale..Also, I have heard you must eat 1 gram per desirable weight. I want to be 130lbs, so 130 grams? Is this right?

Hi Alis, To measure grams of protein you weigh the food (you will need a scale if you want to do it somewhat accurately) and then you look up the food in the USDA nutrition database or some other online database of your choice. Here's an... (more)

Yes, you need to count the carbs in broccoli if you want a really accurate picture of your carb intake. There are a few grams of digestible carbohydrate, even after subtracting out the fiber, and it adds to your total. If you want to use a tool... (more)

I have read that 20g of dietary fat (essential fatty acids) and 0.7 to 1.0g per pound of bodyweight of protein a day is standard minimum for healthful function. Anyone have any clarifications or expanded info on this? Thanks!

The question is what's the minimum level and what's the optimum level? The oft quoted 1 gram per pound weight or 1 gram per pound lean mass is much higher than the minimum level, and might even be higher than the optimum level. That number is a... (more)
