We lived on the Big Island 20 years ago, and NO, even local produce was not less expensive.. Local eggs cost more than those shipped from the mainland--I never understood that! Some local produce was shipped to the mainland (like pineapples)... (more)

So I recently got back from a trip to Hawaii where Spam is eaten like crazy. I had never tried Spam before, but now I find myself craving it. Looking at the nutrition information, it seems to check out alright, at least not much worse than most... (more)

Nitrites in meat are bad news. When cooked, they combine with the aminos in the meat and form carcinogenic compounds (N-nitrosos). Vegetables also have nitrites, but the other vitamins inhibit N-nitroso formation. I'd also question the quality of... (more)

Definitely check out the Kona Farmers Market on Ali'i Drive (http://www.konafarmersmarket.com/). Not much in the way of meat there, but it's your best bet for fresh produce, sometimes eggs, and chilled young coconuts (if you don't mind getting... (more)
