Nitrites in meat are bad news. When cooked, they combine with the aminos in the meat and form carcinogenic compounds (N-nitrosos). Vegetables also have nitrites, but the other vitamins inhibit N-nitroso formation. I'd also question the quality of... (more)

Definitely check out the Kona Farmers Market on Ali'i Drive (http://www.konafarmersmarket.com/). Not much in the way of meat there, but it's your best bet for fresh produce, sometimes eggs, and chilled young coconuts (if you don't mind getting... (more)
