Best/Highest quality tea?

by 30 · March 31, 2013 at 04:01 PM

I've recently been getting into drinking the occasional cup of tea here and there mainly green tea but I've been trying many others as well. For me it's nice and relaxing to have a nice cup of tea as well as a nice beverage change other then water. So my question....

What is the best or highest quality place(s) to get tea from? Is there anything to be carful or watch out for with certain brand/companies etc. Or would you even recommend not drinking tea from a bag and trying to use just the leaves and steeping it your self?

The biggest issue you will have with bagged tea is if the bags are bleached (if they are white, they probably are). If you don't mind investing in a plain old tea strainer, then go for loose tea.

Tea wise, go for organic and stick to green tea, oolong, or black tea (in that order). Anything else (e.g. Earl Grey, "spice" tea, etc) has been adulterated in some way to change the flavor.

Don't discount organic tisanes, however. Tisanes are non-tea drinks often called "herbal tea" (which really makes no sense, since tea is and only every is just: tea (camellia sinensis). I really like to steep loose rooibos, for e.g.

I would definitely recommend drinking loose leaf teas and sticking to organic versions. The green tea powder Matcha is another option as it is the healthiest of all the teas. It is a bit more difficult to brew correctly though, so it might be better to just use matcha as a food additive. Either way, check one of the numerous tea information sites for advice on where to buy good quality teas.

I like Yogi brand teas. The Egyptian licorice is really nice - tastes like cinnamon. And good for digestion, I'm told.

I like Numi brand teas. I get them from Amazon (Subscribe and Save). The varieties I get are non-GMO and the bags are unbleached. I don't know if all of their varieties have the same characteristics, but I love their variety and the flavor.

We go through a gallon of iced tea daily in my house and lately I've been making bulletproof tea instead of coffee some mornings. Good stuff!
