How can I support my liver best?

How can I support my liver function through diet and supplements? I am aware of how eating paleo (eliminating grains, fructose, o6) helps.. but what about macros, micronutrients, herbs, etc.

I currently take NAC 600mg x 2 once daily and eat grass fed beef liver once a week. I have been on Accutane and a few antibioitcs before so I am sure my liver could use some help. My liver enzyems test good, or so my doc says, but I know I have some lingering gut issues although digestion seems solid, and last time I tested hormones werent as good as they should be for someone my age (22 male).

Is milk thistle really reliable? Are there other nutrients? Maybe ones I should avoid excesses of?

EDIT: I also ask because I am interested in trialling a dose of Fluconazole for my mild seborrheic dermatitis that hates topicals of all kinds (so far) and I know this drug can be hard on the liver for some.

There are some anecdotes about milk thistle being used for various liver diseases and then a year later the disease not getting any better, but cessation of milk thistle improving the disease. I don't know for sure what the mechanism is.

Yeah turmeric is a good one for mitigating inflammation and oxidative stress in the liver. High-concentration curcumin is the best, although the spice by itself will probably help things.

Milk thistle is legit, although you don't want to take it all the time. One month on, two months off is what many do. You have the NAC which is good, and you eat grass fed meat which is a good idea.

One phenomenon that has been tied to a poorly functioning liver is endotoxemia. When the gut becomes permeable certain gram negative bacteria pour into the blood stream and go to the liver where they must be killed and it creates a lot of inflammation. Considering that you have skin problems and have been on antibiotics I think you probably have a bit of a leaky gut and a bit of intestinal dysbiosis and it creates excessive inflammation in many ways. An all-around anti-inflammatory diet will ease stress on your liver. It looks like a good portion of liver damage comes from inflammation so that's something to work on. Paleo diets tend to be great for that sort of thing.

Just surfing for info on various nutrition issues and came across this site...I had pretty high liver enzymes on a test in Oct 2010--130 and 89, and other issues also showed up including high glucose, high iron, etc. Rather than listen to my endocrinologist who wanted to put me on Crestor and Metformin, I did a ton of research and completely revamped my eating habits...all pasture-fed meat/poultry, organic veg & fruits, etc. You know the drill. I also started taking various supplements, including SAM-e (Nature Made brand) for my liver, joints--and slight depression...no kidding, it actually works on all three. Long story short, I had my blood tests redone last month, and my ALT/AST liver tests came back at 29 and 17, my glucose is 89, etc. All just done by diet alone and a few supplements. I did NOT take Milk Thistle for my liver, just the SAM-e. I started at 200mg per day and worked up to 1,000mg, which my body seems to prefer the most.

Probably the best thing you can do is to eat pastured liver, which you're already doing. If you want to increase your liver intake without preparing and eating liver more often, you can get freeze-dried liver as a powdered supplement or in capsules.

Milk thistle, as Stabby mentioned, and turmeric are great as well. (You may also want to look into Chinese skullcap, which I know less about.)

Also, don't take steroids.

My boyfriend used burdock root as a liver support while he had some autoimmune messes going on. There is a lot of interesting stuff to back it up, hard to say how much it helped because he was already healing when he started it.

Working both nettles and dandelion greens into the diet should help immensely. Both can be blended into pesto, or sauteed with butter and spices. Both are also available in capsule and tincture form if you don't care for the taste.

I have hep C and have really researched liver suppliments. I would not take the recommended skull cap. Milk thistle is fine. I am on probiotics,Q10Enzyme,NAC,Enzynes,Milk thistle,schzandra and last but not least of all Chorella. I health and energy has improved overall. Many things medicines and suppliments can damage the liver. You need to study before injesting anything. Many thing my Doc has perscribed was toxic to the liver.
