Your housemate has no idea what they are talking about. Ketones are produced as the byproduct of the breakdown of fatty acids - not your muscles. The energy bearing byproduct of muscle catabolosim is glucose, not ketones. (more)

you can't direct energy substrates to various parts of the body. excess glucose will always be burned before ketones.

Ethanol -> Acetaldehyde -> Acetic acid -> Acetyl-CoA -> Ketone bodies The last step of conversion to ketone bodies would not necessarily hapen, especially if you're not low carb and have enough glucose at the time you drink the alcohol. (more)

Maybe you ate coconut oil before? The MCTs are directly converted to ketones inside the liver. Also, ketosis has no on/off switch, even on moderate-carb days some of them will still be detectable.
