Ketosis during Pregnancy

So I did a urine dip stick test and my ketones were really high (the second highest) and I also had elevated protein and bilirubin. I'm only 7 weeks pregnant and I've been very nauseous but no vomiting. I really can't stomach eating very much at all and I've lost 10 lbs in the last 3 weeks! With my daughter, I also had morning sickness but lost about 12 lbs over 3 months. The only difference between this pregnancy and the last is that I'm paleo now, and I wasn't with my daughter. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this? Should I be eating the most sugary foods I can manage? I'm not sure what to do. I haven't gone to the doctor about it yet, but I'm planning on making an appointment if things don't get better in a couple of days.

Yes, I had read this. I think that mild ketosis is probably not an issue, but I'm in severe ketosis and losing weight at a rate of 3 lbs a week, which basically means I must be in a state of starvation. I can't tolerate dairy, and I can't stand the smell of banana at all right now! Lol! But good idea for the smoothie - I'll try a strawberry one :)

Definitely see your doc. In the meantime, can you drink some coconut water and try some coconut milk/banana smoothies (or some dairy if you tolerate it?) Ketosis by itself isn't a problem in pregnancy, but your other symptoms are concerning.

My biggest concern with those numbers is dehydration. And dehydration will aggravate nausea, so that it becomes a vicious cycle -- Nausea keeps you from drinking enough, causing dehydration, which makes you nauseated, which keeps you from drinking enough...

In the first 3 months of pregnancy, you need to be getting about 80g of protein a day. Most of the moms I worked with found that when they got enough protein, the nausea wasn't as bad. Also, make sure that you have something with a high protein content available in the middle of the night -- it will reduce (though not eliminate) the nausea early in the day if you have something protein to nibble on.

Red raspberry and red clover tea also seem to help with nausea. I know it doesn't help much now, but the nausea is one sign of a strong pregnancy -- it indicates high progesterone levels, which help to support the pregnancy, and it shows a healthy attachment of the placental site.

Do -not- eat high-sugar foods. Those will cause spikes and drops in your blood sugar that will aggravate your nausea. Instead, strive to eat a diet that will support the growth of cells -- high in proteins, leafy veggies, and lots of cholesterol-bearing fats. Now is the time when your body is making that baby's nervous system, and you want plenty of fat available to help provide raw materials for nerves, spinal cord, and brain.

and eat your fruit and veg, starchy veg too.
