organ parts, including brain, how do we make up for them?

Hi all,

what certain nutrients are in organ parts such as liver, tongue, and brain, that may be available in certain kinds of supplements? What nutrients are we missing by not eating a lot of organ meats?

I thought for sure someone would chime in here with recommendations for oysters and shell fish.

I order online through US Wellness (bison liver and beef heart so far) or buy beef liver at Safeway.

Liver seems to taste better every time I make it. I remember years ago I needed to dip it in flour and egg and cook onions and bacon to go with it. Now I just plop it in a pan with bacon fat, beef tallow or goose fat and cook it at medium. Then I chow down one portion and freeze the rest as single portions to grab when I'm hungry for it again.

At the store I have noticed a few curious stares but as I know my food choices are probably the least weird thing about me I don't worry about it. I mean, I knit sweaters for my dogs and I make water kefir and yogurt at home, so buying liver is pretty mainstream int hat context.

I used to put a lot of time into appearing not weird (normal). Then I began to remind myself of everyone I met: the vast vanilla backdrop. Then I started giving greater precedence to weirdness of my very own kind. This began to seem normal, in a much better way than before. Best, a lot of the normal people, first variety, didn't quite get me anymore. They started coming around less. Phew.

It's may be extra effort, though the idea that it makes you look weird is really remarkably recent. Neither are particularly good reasons to avoid eating organ meat, and there's not really a comparable substitute. You can get liver pills, and of course most of the nutrients are available in other foods though as convenience goes that's not much of a help. Not sure where you'd source gelatin from. I think it's missing the point to try and supplement a lot of these things, if you want the full spectrum of nutrition then you need to eat the real foods. For greater convenience and social acceptability you could always consider buying dog food.

just eat a hot dog, the are 100 percent organ meats. personally i like to eat an equal volume of mustard to gag them down, no, seriously i toast them to what most would say they are burned and then eat them. Yum.

We just had the best liver ever. We were sitting at a taco stand in our Mexican village when two guys started packing cow parts (on their shoulders) into a meat market next door.

I took a couple of pics and then a bucket of guts went by, and then the skinned head compete with horns.

At which point I shot out of my seat and went to the meat market and got the bestest freshest liver ever!

And Jay, I didn't pan it with red wine but it was in the meal nevertheless.

The four dogs all got some too.

Yeah, people do look at you weird and they will even make "Ewww" sounds when you are checking out at the store. Even the farmer that we buy grass-fed beef from thinks I'm weird because I want the tongue, heart, liver, etc. But I just laugh at their silliness. If you really can't get passed being seen as weird, you could order from one of the online stores, and have it secretly delivered. :-)

Whose looking at you? Trying to impress someone? :)

If you only eat one organ, eat liver. It is one of natures true super foods - typically an over used term, not so with liver.

I know I haven't answered your question regarding supplements, but they rarely get close to the benefit as the real thing.
