Side effects on Paleo plan?

I have been on the Paleo plan for 21 days. To date I do not have more energy but I do have consistent nausea and frequent severe headaches. I am prone to migraines and have had four major migraines in these 21 days combine with a continuous log grade headache. Can I attribute all of this to my body adjusting to Paleo? Thoughts welcome!

To add to Doug's good information about getting into ketosis: coconut milk is very high in carbs. Some have to stay under 30, or even 20, grams of CHO per day to be in ketosis.

Ann, we all eat different amounts of fat. I eat 100-130 grams of fat per day. (ca. 30gCHO and 55-75gPRO). I use beef fat, butter, cream, cheese, and egg yolks for my fat intake. :) No plant oils, nuts or seeds, of anything made from them, for me. It takes experimenting to find what foods and amounts suit one. All the best to you. :)

Definitely! If you can't really help the migraines with diet alterations, I'd probably blame air pressure.

you wont hit ketosis if your eating sweet potatoes, carrots, fruit and nut butters. You have to keep your carbs very low 30-60 grams for 3 days to get into ketosis.

I eat lots of good and lots of bad fats. I got my blood test back and the cholestrol went way down. Its the carbs causing the problems not the fat. If you eat 5% carbs you will not be as hungry and eating less calories will be easy, but you will get the carb flu for sometime. Most people loose their appetite during this period and loose a bunch of weight, but, you will have low energy and head ace. It will pass. Eat lots of fat, any kind to begin. When you have adjusted to primarily burn fat for fuel cut back. You are probably addicted to carbohydrates and its hard for you to come off.

I have been following a 40-30-30 plan of protein-carbs-fat plan. I began with a strict meal delivery of 1200 cal per day which left me hungry. I have move away from that and have upped my intake but do still feel crummy. I found that the raw veggies so often were upsetting my stomach also. What is a recommendation of grams of good fat per day, if you know?

Hi Todd. I am 5'9" weighing 144lbs. Having dropped about seven pounds in the three weeks. I do eat carbs and have added nut butters and just added sweet potatoes at dinner once in a while. I have wondered of I am going through Ketosis because I perpetually have a terrible taste in my mouth. I am eating 3-4oz.of meat protein at lunch and dinner, eggs with Turkey bacon and veggies at breakfast. I have two snacks a day usually either coconut milk yogurt with a fruit or nut butter with an apple/celery. I try to maintain40-30-30 protein-carbs-fat.

"paleo plan would never be enough food for me and my workouts. So add some food, carbs from sweet potatoes and fats" Where'd you get your definition of the "Paleo Plan" Paleo simply means eat real food and avoid precessed crud. Carbs are real food, fats are real food.

If you are going VLC you will have to wait for your body to adjust to burning its own fat for fuel or the fats you consume. It can take up to 8 weeks for full adjustment. I eat VLC, about 25 grams of carbs a day and It took me 4-5 weeks before the headaches and low energy disappeared. Now I feel great without any cravings for carbs, just cravings for fat. I found that eating high fat foods and lots of it helped the adjustment. Then after my body switched from burning carbs to fats I cut down on the amount of fats and food. Then started experimenting with fasting with great results. That worked great for me.

Are you eating enough carbohydrates? While some Paleo-peoples like to do the low-carb thing, it's not "official" part of the Paleo-shtick. I've seen it in others: people ate VLC for weeks on end, never quite giving there body time to adjust, and not sure what they should expect. Headaches and nausea where the main symptoms - sometimes even severe disorientation, too.

Nothing else comes to mind, but if you haven't seen greens daily or a few sweet potato in as many weeks, consider adding those carbohydrates back in.

Curious where you are located. I tend to get migraines where there are severe pressure changes and there's been a major change in the weather where I am, hence I've had a lot of migraines too. Also, did you give anything significant up like caffeine that might contribute to your migraines?

Are you doing any of the snacks? I like paleo plan but understand they are just guidelines. I will also tell you that I'm 6' 1" 210lbs and paleo plan would never be enough food for me and my workouts. So add some food, carbs from sweet potatoes and fats. Fats will help you out a lot. Also let us know a little more of what your eating and your activity level and if you wouldn't mind telling us a bit about yourself height weight etc.
