[OFFICIAL] Restoring PaleoHacks Features

by (10984)
Updated June 19, 2014 at 6:29 PM
Created May 30, 2014 at 2:15 PM

Hi to All PH members, especially those who have been members since our old site. I've talked with @DavidSinick and agreed to compile a list of prioritized features from the old PH website that are currently missing or desired. Please provide feedback for what you would like to see on PH. I will update the list below to reflect your answers.

Draft Excel Sheet 06/19/2014:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1N6xhMFfSle...

Old Missing PH Features:

  1. User should be able to see who originally asked a question from the main question page.
  2. For high point non-moderator users(10,000+ points) to close or reopen a question, 5 members must vote to have it closed or reopened. Only these members should be able to see how many votes have already been cast and by who.
  3. User should have the ability to find the meta section of PH from the All Questions dropdown box or from the Relevant, Updated, Created, Hottest, Votes link on the top of the questions main page.
  4. When a logged out user tries to post a comment the site hangs. Instead the user should be prompted to log in.
  5. When a new user visits PH, the user is given a PH newsletter popup. The popup has no x, the user would have to know that clicking the top right corner would close the popup even though there is no x or exit there. There should be an X graphic here.
  6. There should be a notification icon that is at the top of every page (in the header) and changes color when someone responds to one of your answers, questions or comments.
  7. For moderators and users with above 10k points provide an admin panel where they can see some of the following: 1) 5 Votes to Close/ Delete 2) New posts by new users 3) New posts to old answers 4) Recent votes to close 5) Recent votes of spam 6) Recent votes of offensive 7) Recent votes to delete
  8. User should be able to mark a question as "Favorited". On user profile page user should be able to see all questions which they have favorited.
  9. Provide a graph feature where user can see points gained over time.
  10. Similar to Meta questions, there should be a division called Bounty Questions or Featured Questions, User should be able to mark a question as featured for a cost of 50 points. The question is moved to the Featured Questions area and the best answer or highest points after two weeks gets 100 points.
  11. User should have ability to view sort their answers by date and vote count on user profile page.
  12. Only answers and not comments should raise a question to the top of the updated questions page.

Future Desired PH Features:

  1. Change "% Correct" to "% Best Answer" on user home page.
  2. There should be a sticky page where moderators can post stickies of the most common questions we get on PH.
  3. User should have a minimum of 50 points to post a link to a website and User should have a minimum of 15 points to upvote.
  4. After 14 days if the Original Poster did not accept an answer, it should default to the answer with the most votes.
  5. There should be an area where users can chat live with one another.
  6. User should be provided with an internal profile picture program. Instead of handling profile pictures through gravatar user should be able to edit profile picture and upload it to the PH website.
  7. User should have to validate their email before being allowed to post any comments, answers or questions on the site..
  8. Increase text and button size in mobile version.
  9. The number of answers per page should either be optional as per the user profile page or it should default to 12+ instead of 10.

Possible Glitches (reported by):

  1. When editing comments there is a dropdown box with all previous revisions. Clicking a previous revision is supposed to dynamically update the question title, question content and question tags with that revision's content but this is not happening. (Stephen 4).
  2. When user edits a question the user is able to change the question title, content and topics but not the "Space for your question". User is unable to move question between Meta and Default, but should be able to. (Stephen 4)
  3. Badges should apply retroactively to all of users' old questions/answers/comments instead of only to new events (CDone).
  4. From user profile user can click past comments which they have made. The link ends in #comment-number. This link Does not scroll to comments on the page it links to (CDone). Instead it stays at top of page. To fix this use the following incomplete JS code: var anchor = window.location.hash; if($(anchor).length >0) //Show all comments on page $('html, body').animate({ scrollTop: $(anchor).offset().top },2000);//Code by Stephen 4 This js code works for me after I manually show the comments on the page. I would need the uncompressed combined.js.h377415854.pack js file to give complete code.
  5. On IOS 7+ iphone/ipad chrome/safari user cannot reply to or vote on comments. The options disappear as soon as user takes finger off of given comment.
  6. User is not able to edit comments or answers using android chrome on mobile platforms. User can follow through the motions and page will refresh but the comments/answers do not get updated.

@CDone, seriously, if you don't stop trolling this and other threads I'm going to have to report you ;). Sorry it took so long to edit this, I got injured leading into my vacation and have been to several doctors, the ER and a specialist. I'm back pretty much to normal now and I see from certain meta questions that as soon as I left all chaos let loose and you got in a ton of trouble, tisk tisk tisk ;[).

re: New Site #3

The mobile platform sucks (i use iOS). I cannot reply to a comment, I cannot vote a comment, the buttons are too small (at least for my fingers). If I go to another tab to try and look something up, what I had written disappears. In general the experience on a iPhone or iPad is terrible.

re: Old Site #3.

In the old site, I could go to my answers and sort all of my answers by highest score. This was useful to find old answers that were to the same question. Also you could list by date. The current site only allows you to list by "Activity".

If I wanted to find my highest voted answer, how do I do that?

@daz, thanks for your feedback! That's a great question you've linked to with some solid answers (+1). It looks like a lot of those answers have already either been incorporated or are somewhat vague though. Please include any that stand out to you in a formal answer and I'll incorporate them above along with a +1 for your help. Don't kill me if I don't respond until later though. It's late here in the Eastern Standard Time Zone, * big yawn*.

I suggest you move this from META. Primarily because META questions get very few views, and it would be good to hear from the community on this.

Can we please get the number of answers per page increased from 10 answers to 15 answers (or if 15 cannot be done; 12, 13 or 14) [Included, Header 2, #9].

I mentioned this to David in an email but different "spaces" for different questions would be nice. Newbie questions, hardcore questions, science questions, etc. We've always encouraged necroing old questions but allot of old questions don't get the attention they should [Included, Header 2, #2, please clarify if this point Header 2, #2 is different than the point you're making here. This would be a different section where the highest quality common questions/points would be stuck in a definitive list type manner. This could give a lot of old questions the attention they deserve; Also Header 1, #1 will allow members to see who posted questions and sort out the low point newbies from the hardcore science-y questioners].

This might be a bit of a long shot but.

I don't use Ad block on this site, it's a free site and seeing the adds means revenue is generated to keep the site going, but, when I see something like the Jillian Michaels banner knowing this person thinks Paleo is a fad/ scam[Excluded, unfortunately Google adsense in its infinite wisdom chooses what ads display on what sites based on a website's meta data a user's browsing history and the ad's owner's preferences when creating the ad. We can not have these ads removed unless they broke google's Terms of Service. If you browse on groupon or amazon using google chrome then it will change what ads you see on PH. For example all my ads here are for groupon getaways. Good Luck, thanks for leaving ads unblocked for PH, even though I don't see any of that $$ , lol.]?

I can't seem to order answers as before - i.e. they are by vote, this can't be changed to date as far I've seen [Included, Header 1, #11].

As well I can't seem to see this now but in the new site there was a pane that showed the most recent activity. e.g a comment. But this wasn't linked to; if I wanted to see I someone had responded and there were many comments in the thread, I would have to expand many or all of them which maybe could eb changed. (This cold also be addressed by the previous change suggested about bringing back the old in site comment/response etc notification pane that was along the top...) [Included, Header 1, #6] .

Suggested tweaks:

1. New comments should not raise the question to the top of the feed, just answers [Included, Header 1, #12].

2. There used to be a an envelope in the corner by your username that changed color when you had responses. Bring that back [Included, Header 1, #6]. (CD's number 1.)

3. The reply to specific comments feature is cool, keep that [Included, already implemented].

4. The ability to change your username at will in case you get sick of yours [Excluded, current DB uses usernames as primary key, not possible at the moment].

5. an internal profile picture program. Going through gravitar to change your profile pic is a hassle cause that's yet another username/password that needs to memorized [Included, Header 2, #6].

I do like this list. I would add open all the comments to a question/answer thread by default instead of having to click on the X Comment link, and then drill down 8 levels on some of the more heated discussions[Excluded, this would take away from user experience on mobile platforms, alternate solution needed].

Not listed in any particular order of importance:

1. Ability to sort answers chronologically instead of by number of votes [Included, Header 1, #11].

2. Prevention of comments disappearing when returning from links [Well, they don't disappear, I just find it annoying to come back to a different section of the page, then have to scroll back and reclick to finish reading the rest of the comments. But really, thanks for taking the time (as I suppose this is being done gratis) to sort out and fix all these problems].

3. Improved explanation of badges. I don't even understand them any more [Excluded, explanation are provided on hover].

4. Ability to mark questions as favorites [Included, Header 1, #8].

5. The old site had a graph feature on the user page that allowed one to track points and votes over time. IDK, the whole user page was better ordered on the old site than this one. This one is a PITA to get any info out of [Included, Header 1, #9].

Agree with Stephen's suggestions.

Some previously available desired features are:

  1. The envelop -- told you when someone responded to your answer. Yes the new site does it via email, but it's crap and half the time doesn't work [Included, Header 1, #6].
  2. The points tracker -- I could click on my profile then click on a link and it would bring up a graph that would show how many points, and on what question those points came from. With the new site, this works oddly. For example, I gained 50 points, but when I look at my answers, I should have only gained 20. Where did the other 30 come from? Sometimes I log in and see points, but no up votes on my answers. My assumption is that older answers are being up-voted, but no clue which ones [Included, Header 1, #9].
  3. Sort Answers by votes/dates/etc -- I actually used that feature quite often, it would be good to bring that back. looking at old answers is impossible on this new platform [Included, Header 1, #11]
  4. Bring back the 10k's -- Now that I am a "Moderator" I can close, lock, and delete posts, but I seemingly have fewer capabilities than I did as a 10k user on the old site. At a minimum, I would like to see [Included, Header 1, #7]:
  • 5 Votes to Close/ Delete
  • New posts by new users
  • New posts to old answers
  • Recent votes to close
  • Recent votes of spam
  • Recent votes of offensive
  • Recent votes to delete

New Features:

  1. A Definitive List Page -- a Page that is group by topics that the Moderators create. Topics like: Carbohydrates; Night Shades; Cholesterol; Chronic Cardio; etc. On each topic we could catalog a couple of things: (1) A Round up of the Guru's positions [including those that have changed]; (1) A Round up of scientific studies -- I think this would be a great resource that would be community driven and a "One-stop" shop for most of the Paleo grey areas [Included, Header 2, #2].
  2. Separate META and Help -- these are obviously two different things, having them in the same space confuses people [Included, Header 1, #3].
  3. On the mobile platform the buttons are too small for my fingers [Included, Header 2, #8].
  4. Minimum score to post a link [Included, Header 2, #3].
  5. Allow Users to select best answer. After 14 days if the OP did not accept an answer, it would default to the answer with the most votes (and maybe designated differently) [Included, Header 2, #4].
  6. 10K User Area to discuss specific changes to teh site/ trolls.

Glitches:

  1. Also, suggest removing the badges -- some don't work, some appear to work sporadically -- so just get rid of them [Included, Header 3, #3]
  2. When clicking on a new comment from the main page, it does not go to that comment in post -- it just goes to the post [Included, Header 3, #4].
  3. On the mobile platform I cannot reply to a comment [Included, Header 3, #5].
  4. On the mobile platform I cannot vote a comment [Included, Header 3, #5].
  5. On mobile platform, going to and from another tab erases text in comment area [Excluded, unable to replicate].
  6. Roll Back Feature does not seem to work on Chrome/Firefox[Pending: For someone who has never rolled back on the new site (me), can you please walk me through the steps where one can select the rollback feature, or are you saying that this feature is missing entirely?].

I don't have strong feelings either way, except the 5 votes to close feature gave the idea of a consensus [Included, Header 1, #2].

For new features:

-Ability to upvote an answer to a question after you've written an answer. I get the permission denied "log in as another user" response [Excluded, unable to reproduce, please clarify].

-A good spam blocker. Having more mods is cleaning things up, for now, but auto blocking eould be better [Included, Header 2, #3, #7].
