Best probiotic on the market?

by (2949)

I hear Dr. Ohhira, Bio-Kult, and Dr. Mercola's brands are really good. Most probiotics on the market are a waste of time. Thoughts?

[EDIT] Bio-Kult (the brand recommended on GAPS) says: Allergen Statement: Contains soy and milk ingredients in trace amounts. The levels of milk ingredients should not affect those who are lactose intolerant.

I definitely will not be buying these.

It's more than a matter of preference, though. Raw, organic fermented foods not only taste great and make you feel great, they are *more effective* than taking probiotic supplements. Fact.

I am allergic to soy, my son is allergic to milk. We both tolerate BioKult just fine. The amounts are so small that they shouldn't affect anyone.

Ohira's is prohibitively expensive and IMO not worth the $1 per capsule.

The number of live bacteria are usually too small in number to do much good in cheapy probiotics, and even if they are sufficient at time of manufacture many aren't shelf stable and unless they are refrigerated all the way from being manufactured to consumption.

Thanks, I've heard of Theralac as well. Everyone I've talked to likes Ohhira's the best. How many of Ohhira's do you take a day? I found a 120 capsule supply on amazon for $86 which seems like a good deal if I take one a day.

Garden of Life RAW Probiotics are awesome, over 30 strains, potency listed at expiration rather than time of manufacture, also no processing aids (like potato starch or cellulose) are used, and excellent value compared to weak sauce products that dominate the market. 90 caps costs 49.95 before coupons and discounts, I think it's pretty much the best dollar per CFU count value in the industry mathematically. We actually formulate these to well over 150 Billion at manufacture, we under-promise and over-deliver.

This is my favorite area of research for the last few years, and I work for Garden of Life mainly because they fit so closely with paleo philosophy: we're out there beating the drum for grass-fed, pasture-raised, raw milk, cultured food, bone stocks, and whole-food supplements like cod liver oil -ours is one of the only one that is not deodorized on the market. Green Pasture beats our cod liver oil, but nobody beats our probiotics.

If you haven't taken our Raw Probiotics before, I would recommend that most people start with one capsule, instead of our suggested use of 3 per day, because most people have never taken real-deal probiotics like this before and the endotoxin response can be problematic for those with reflux and dysbiosis.

There are of course other good probiotics on the market, and it's true that cultured food is awesome, but most people simply will not make raw kefir on their kitchen counter, nor will they make authentic sauerkraut or kvass. I do, and I still get additional benefits from probiotics.

Oh, and by the way, enteric coating is pretty much a scam. Often polymers are used which are made of synthetic materials, and also heat is applied to seal it. and furthermore, it's a total waste of time unless you're dealing with especially fragile strains that can't survive acid and bile. keep in mind that the word acidophilus literally means "lover of acid" it's an acid-o-phile. loves acid.

This is definitely one area of our industry where the marketing is way ahead of the science, and I see ignorance abounds out there.

I like Ohhira's alot although it is quite expensive and I am really unsure why it works better than most probiotics because it doesn't have very many CFU's compared to some of the bigger guns but for some reason works way better...?

Theralac is also very good especially for digestion but Ohhira's seems to do more than just improve digestion.

I take Vitamin Shoppe brand Ultimate 10 probiotic. L Casei has been shown to modulate autoimmune diseases. L Rhamonsus has been shown to modulate anxiety. At 1.3bil/strain, it's enough to seed the intestines, which is really all you need as if the diet is right they will prosper and grow to the quantities that you want. It is also Enteric coated, which should protect the bacteria from the stomach acids, though I take PPIs sometimes anyway for unrelated reasons.

Vitamin Shoppe has a nice balanced fiber supplement as well, though annoyingly it only comes in pill form and you have to take 3-6/day!

The 11-strain powder from www.customprobiotics.com is good as are his other probees. They are expensive up front, but have a really high CFU count. Otherwise homemade kefir from raw milk.

I like fermented foods as well however to achieve better gut flora balance and to overpower pathogenic microbes (yeasts/bacteria/etc) often much higher dosing in the 100-400 billion CFU ranges are needed. These are just a DROP IN THE BUCKET of the oceans of trillions of gut microbes we commensally live with in our gut.

Love Prescrip Assist from all the I've heard from great practitioners. Would be interested to hear your responses in 2-4wks later, Happy Now! Probably I'll rotate to this one later...

I'm using Flora Balance which is spore-based and therefore survives gastric acidity and is shelf stable. I had horrific yeast/clostridia issues after metal poisoning after the oral surgeon DRILLED ON A TITANTIUM DENTAL IMPLANT. Flora Balance has really helped a lot to repair subsequent dysbiosis. http://www.iherb.com/O-Donnell-Formulas-Flora-Balance-Bacillus-Laterosporus-Bod-Strain-60-Capsules/6078?at=0

Comes in a powder too and even helps plants grow better according to a good friend! http://www.flora-balance.com/Flora-Balance.htm

I make my own Kefir from grains and think it is probably the best all around - especially if made from non pasteurized raw milk from a known/clean source.

If you like fermented food sources, want 100% certified organic foods & bacteria, raw/enzymes intact, plus the core 13 strain family checkout InLiven powder or Fast Tract liquid from Miessence .

The source for the Miessence superstrain bacteria is provided by the only certified organic probiotics supplier in the world. Bred for 25 years to withstand heat, cold, stomach acids, flouride/chlorine to thrive in the gut. So hardy that the product does NOT need to be refrigerated. Very potent and effective when taken regularly and as part of a long-term daily regime.

The GAPS Guide refers people wishing to avoid BioKult (for various reasons, Bifidus being one of them) to Acidophilus from www.kirkmanlabs.com or Scdophilus from www.giprohealth.com - these are both SCD-legal. I haven't tried either so can't vouch for them, but thought I'd pass the info along.

I've taken Theremedix probiotics before with good results. They have a whole series of obtusely named probiotics (each has it's own 3 letter name) that are geared for very specific conditions. I'm currently taking Prescript Assist, it is supposed to be good, but I'm only 3 days in so nothing to report yet.
