muscles spasms in upper body

I've been on the paleo diet for only one week and seem to have no problems sticking to to. I know a week is nothing. I plan to stick to it for ever if I can and if I loose some weight. However, I've been experiencing severe muscle spasms in the large muscles of the upper half of my body. Can sticking with this diet cause these symptoms? I did not ease into this gradually as I knew I'd do better if I just started full force. Thank you!

This is likely the issue. You also are getting rid of free intracellular water so you need to up your fluid intake. I drink close to two liters of fluid a day and when I first started eating this way 4.5 years ago I drank close to four liters a day for about a month. I also cut all caffeinated beverages and alcohol because both cause a diuresis as well

It is impossible to tell you anything based on this information. First, what "Paleo" diet are you on? Secondly, have you been doing anything else besides eating? Like, oh, exercising, walking around outside, moving your limbs about, make any sudden movements, etc. Have you been sick recently? Have you been depressed? Are you on any medications? Are you dehydrated? There's all sorts of things that can cause muscle spasms, but cutting out sugar, grains and vegetable oils are usually not among them.

As for the Mg and K deficiency, again, without knowing if you're taking a mulit-vitamin, what you're eating and how much/frequently you exert yourself, shrugs no one can tell you anything useful other than get a massage.

Are you supplementing magnesium and getting enough potassium? These two may be short in your diet. They're muscle relaxers and very important.
