How do you cut down on protein?

I seem to be having too much .. I seem to look older than my years.

I am having 140g a day and weight 150lbs .. I work out 2 times per week with heavy weights .. other days I do a lot of walking at work .. but definitely feel like I could cut down on protein ..

I eat Mince and Mackerel + fruit in the morning, Mince and Rice in the evening and Mince and lots of organic veg in the evening.

I need about 2500 cals a day as I feel tired at work otherwise.

I was thinking of cutting out the mackerel and replacing it with cod liver oil for a start.

Yeah, I'm way past step 7 right now. :) Though I skipped the steps 4 & 5.

Fair enough, admittedly i looked into LC due to having a problem with blood sugar, if i can eventually tolerate them i may try to regularly eat some tubers. I do feel being an efficient fat burner is a great baseline, then reintroduce carbs as i see fit. When i eat HFLC i generally have great mental energy & concentration, and no symptoms of blood sugar problems. I've never measured my ketones but i eat 85/10/5, fat/protein/carbs 5 days a week as that's what keeps symptoms at bay. Im gonna experiment with deeper fat burning, for longer periods than 5 days, then reintroduction

I've gone into ketosis four times. Once to learn about it for myself, and three times to experiment with it. All four times were miserable.

If I were diabetic or had refractory epilepsy, I would definitely explore keotsis. But, for health, the cost/benefit ratio just doesn't support the need. That's my opinion and based solely on my observations.

Paleo has gone through the low carb cycle several times, the sigh is because we've been here before.

You ask people why they want to do VLC, valid question, but why the *sigh* when someone mentions it? What's wrong with VLC paleo? Have you got something against VLC for some reason? Valid question ;)

Maybe its just got that faddish quality to it or something?

it is so cyclical.

1. New to Paleo, buy into dogma

2. Start to feel great, swear this is the greatest ever

3. Start to loose weight

4. Stop feeling so good, decide you have to go 100% Paleo to fix

5. Wonder why things aren't getting better

6. Eat a carb, realize that it doesn't send you into a diabetic coma

7. Realize that a lot of the dogma is questionable.

He wants to do VLC though… *sigh* Are there seemingly more people wanting ketosis/VLC, or am I just increasingly intolerant of it?

exactly! a baked potato with butter is going to be 300-400 calories. cook your veggies in extra light olive oil or coconut oil and you add calories.

Vegetables & fat to help absorb the nutes in the veggies, you'll reach 500 cals that way piss easy, steamed veggies w/butter, salad w/olive oil. When I have fish if there's no oil i'll fill the can with oil. Extra fat is fine as long as you hit all your micros, imo. Some people drink a glass of olive oil for breakfast everyday with no problems.

I need to stay at 2500 cals :) swapping about 500 cals from the mince for around 100 cals of veg will not cut it LOL

You might do better replacing some of the mince with say, liver pate and some egg yolks. I don't think too much protein is an issue for you - if you're eating less than 1g of protein per 1 lbs of lean body mass per day, you have just enough to do repairs. Now if you're 150lbs and you're overweight by say 30lbs, then perhaps less protein would be helpful.

In my opinion, replacing food with oil is not typically a good option. 2 tbsp of oil will give you the same caloric load as a filet of mackel but in addition to the reduce protien you are also loosing a lot of nutrients.

Why not swap out one of your servings of mince with vegetables?

I was eating about the same amount protein as you were & noticed the same things, I cut it down to 35g-70g per day and feel/look better for it. I have meat once a day in the evening rather than 3 times a day, if im hungry during the day I snack on avocados, nuts, butter, ghee, coconut oil, olive oil, avocado oil, leftovers, or i fast until my meal in the evening which is easy as i eat VLC most days, usually the less I eat during the day the more energy I have, meat makes me lethargic so best to save it for the evening anyway.
