Is this normal? Admittedly, I've only been eating in a ketosis-inducing way (less that 35g carbs, 80% fat) for a couple of days, but so far nothing good is happening. I'm eating calorically more this way than I normally do, because of all the coconut I'm consuming, but from what I've read here that should be okay, no? But I've definitely put on a few pounds already. I'm taking a week-long break from exercise (mostly cardio)- I have no idea what effect that might have.

You are NOT in ketosis. Getting into ketosis and gluconeogenesis is a process that takes a minimum of two weeks and to get into full, functional ketosis, 4-6 weeks. And if you have a"cheat" meal or carb spike day, you go back to square one. You do not resume a ketotic diet on the next day and resume being in ketosis. The coconut oil you are consuming is simply to ease you into ketosis/gluconeogenesis with the least discomfort possible. Watch and listen to this. Then watch and listen to it again. Take notes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkdFkPxxDG8 And consider buying Phinney's book, which also comes in a Kindle edition. Watch and listen carefully. When you get the right information and really understand and assimilate it, it makes all the difference in the world. |

There's nothing magical about ketosis and you will still gain if energy in exceeds energy out. Ketosis is not neccessary for fatloss and you shouldn't put coconut and other fat sources everywhere. Focus on more protein from meat/eggs/dairy + green veggies and don't add any fats other than some fishoil. You'll be getting enough fats from your protein sources and don't have to worry about ketosis. |

Ketosis means that your body is using mostly fat for fuel. IF you are eating less energy than you burn, then yay, it'll be mostly stored fat that your body uses, and you will shrink. But if you are eating more energy, then you will still be laying down fat faster than you burn it. The win in ketosis is that most people are a lot less hungry. It does not add up to fat loss by itself. If I go to ketosis I will usually undereat without planning to, because my appetite just shrinks. But this might not be true for you. And coconut is not a magic free fat loss food. The fats in it are easy to digest and it's a good choice for promoting ketosis, but if you eat enough of it, you can still get fatter on it. |

Really? You're eating more calories than you used to and you're putting on weight? That is strange. Maybe you need to eat even less carbs. Of course i'm joking. One of the benefits with ketosis is that it will make you less hungry, therefore you should be able to cut your calories with little effort. It should also take you a couple of days to get into keto, so you may not be there yet or only just there. |

Yeah, I've gained too. I went from a very low fat version of paleo to high fat so I guess my system if trying to adjust. If this keeps up though I'll freak. |

Its only been a couple of days...your not well adapted yet. Your bodies satiety signals and your ability to utilize fat for fuel are not anywhere near optimal at this point. It takes time. For me nothing budged for a couple of weeks, then the goo just started melting off all the sudden. Keep it up and you will adapt. |

I'm having the same problem. I have been stuck at 220-224 for about 4 weeks. I decided to do the fat fast for 3 days. I was 223.8lbs when I started and after 3 days of being in ketosis I was down to 218.2. I finally got over my weight loss plateau. I started looking around online and found an article that said peoples diet should consist of 50%-70% fat. Then I read an article where people said they lost weight quickly by eating 80% fat. I also read that eating too much protein could cause weight gain. I've reduced my protein to 100-120g a day and eat 80% fat. In the last week after losing weight on the 3 day fat fast I've gone from 218.2 to 224.4. I'm freaking out. Ketone sticks say I'm in ketosis. I'm now counting calories and I'm hungry. Should I just stick with the 80% fat diet and wait to adapt or quit while I'm ahead? |

I'm gaining in ketosis, but am feeling stronger. I think I'll just use the extra energy to try to build muscles. Patience they say. |

I gained 10 pounds quickly, but then cut down on the calories a bit and added gelatin and have woken up 5 pounds lighter over night. I read this happened to someone else after trying gelatin at night. |

For me, I've gained weight (just a little) but I have gotten a flatter stomach and more shapely, toned body. I never weigh myself anymore, I just go by what the mirror says. If you were an average weight to begin with, you may end up gaining weight, but that doesn't mean that you are gaining fat. |
