People used to tell me about acid reflux and my general reaction was to ask them what does that feel like, but now after being on paleo for 2 weeks I am experiencing the phenomena too. Maybe Im not shocked because I am a heavy eater, I am a big dude, I currently weigh 323, I weighed 338 when I started 2 weeks ago. So I am happy with the progress. But my point is I still eat alot of food, probably close to 3000 calories, but now mostly fat/protein and a very negligible amount of carbs. under 40-50g probably

In my imagination I assume that I am getting acid reflux because my body isn't used to digesting so much protein. Naturally the easiest solution to me seems to be to eat more carbs.

Well after 16 days of fairly successful paleo this line of thought has sent me on my first 24 hour cheat day, and here I sit after experiencing a late night sugar high for the first time in awhile. Maybe that was a mistake, But I will wait and see.. I am not a celiac, and I mostly do paleo to combat my heavy carb addiction.

My question is, is there anyone else out there that has experienced this same thing, (acid reflux exclusively on paleo) and what did you do to make it stop?

Also google low stomach acid. Robb Wolf has some info on a supplement called Betaine HCL that might help. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Feb 26 2012 at 15:20
Thanks guys and Sandra I have been eating cheese, I will try giving that up and see what happens, all great answers and exactly what I was looking for people with the same experiences. I don't think its the eggs as I didn't even eat them when I was effected and I haven't been eating hardly any fruit so I will try the dairy response, because I have sorta been indulging too much in dairy probs. thanks – Nathan H Feb 26 2012 at 20:28

Yes, dairy was the culprit for me. I used to drink milk and have cheese and never had a problem with it. When I went Archevore, I increased my dairy (full fat cream, cheeses, butter) and had horrible reflux, one episode sent me to my GP...thought I was having a heart attack.

I thought it was guar gum in coconut milk. Only once I gave up dairy and then challenged myself did I figure out dairy was the culprit. Now, even small amounts of dairy (say a Paleo taco with a bit of cheese and sour cream) gives me reflux for 2 days.

For me it is egg whites. Think they were always a prob for me but didn't realize it until i uped my egg consumption on Paleo. Just ate a bunch of yolks, btw. They alone don't cause any probs.
