I'm dairy free, nut free, almost fruit free paleo. I'm in a situation where I have to eat out tonight and the place is Buffalo Wild wings. Not ideal but I have to make due. I'll get to eat the next day so if I don't end up eating that much its not a big deal but I'm with people that aren't tolerable, they know I'm "allergic" to dairy though. I'd rather not make a scene about what i'm eating.

I'm going to either go with traditional wings or non-glazed ribs. The problem is I hate eating absolute crap and i've heard the ribs are originally just pre-cooked/frozen. Unfortunately the traditional wings aren't a great option either. Plain chicken wings but they're still fried (not breaded or sauced option). Salad? I hate making all sorts of special requests for what to not put on. Bleh.

This link might be helpful... http://www.buffalowildwings.com/downloads/bww_allergen_list.pdf

Trust me, if this was avoidable I would but it is the current situation. I'm fine with cheat meals but my version of cheat is usually paleo or primal because afterwards I feel awful. I just want something that I'll feel okay with afterwards.

Thanks

Or maybe the Naked Tenders ? Doesn't look like they fry them...unless i'm reading the website wrong. – ov227 Feb 27 2012 at 19:10
They have no ovens...the naked tenders go in the fryer too. However...maybe they won't absorb as much of the oil. – BaconHealsChic Feb 27 2012 at 19:18
I would do the naked tenders- they don't have any breading (i.e. no gluten). – Chris Feb 27 2012 at 20:27
Update: I survived! Was it the best thing I ever ate? No. I had 10ish traditional style wings (fried yes...) covered with a simple spicy dry rub. I am satisfied and don't feel sick, bloated, or anything weird. Life goes on, I've been drinking a significant amount of water all evening and i'll be IFing till lunch tomorrow (going for 18 hours). – ov227 Feb 28 2012 at 4:53

Unbreaded fried chicken in a hot-sauce-based sauce is not paleo? – Matt Feb 28 2012 at 13:28

Two things...
Eat before you go so you are less likely to say "f-it, I'm gonna eat whatever".

Just get 5 of their unbreaded, unglazed wings and a dry side salad (this is normally what I do at "wing" places, of which my co-workers seem to have an unhealthy addiction to).

I cannot believe that we are at a point as a paleo/primal culture where we are essentially neurotic about going out for a meal with a group of people and will actually post on the internet about how to handle it. Seriously?

Honestly, if you don't want to eat then don't. If people are offended by that, it's THEIR problem to deal with, NOT yours. Stand your ground and just tell them you just came out for the company. For God sake, people, why is this such a big deal?

You are so right, I wish this didn't bother me. I'm just going to go and have a good time. It's silly to obsess, i'm 20 years old a few fried crappy wings won't hurt me. – ov227 Feb 27 2012 at 22:50
Agreed, Bryan. Paleo folks would be well-suited to cut back on all this anal retentiveness. – Matt Feb 28 2012 at 13:25

I CURRENTLY work at Buffalo Wild Wings. I have for nearly a decade. The oil used in the fryers at my location is beef tallow. There is a small amount of trans fat listed. I personally take my lunches, but if I'm going to kick my heels up I get wings with Desert Heat dry seasoning and ask for Daytona style. They will still be fried, but put on the grill afterwards. If you get any other grilled chicken make sure you ask for desert heat instead of the normal grill seasoning(wheat). Also, any of the Asian sauces have wheat.

I took your advice and ordered exactly what you said. My BWW's had no idea what Daytona Style was, but did put the wings on the grill for me. Best wings EVER! Thanks for the tips! – LadyKinster May 14 2012 at 3:40
Hooray! You are welcome! – Caveman Truck May 16 2012 at 0:23
Thanks for the tips on the Desert Heat dry seasoning. Last time I was there and asked about gluten that part was left out but otherwise staff was super knowledgeable and helpful. – karmapolicia Jul 26 at 16:09

It seems to me that you have three options:

  1. Tie on the feedbag, relax and enjoy yourself. Eat whatever hits the table.
  2. Don't eat anything, but enjoy the company and atmosphere.
  3. (What I would probably do) order a small portion, say 10 wings, of the Traditional Chicken Wings and enjoy.

Three is my only option really, i'm just going to get a very plain meal and drink a decent amount of water. Might mush my stuff around look like i'm eating more than I actually do. – ov227 Feb 27 2012 at 19:24
OV - That's what I would do. You'll be away from the big screen television sets and back home before you know it. – Ralph Furley Feb 27 2012 at 19:26

BW3's... one of my families favorite place for sure. Honestly.... I get a grilled chicken salad, no croutons, no cheese and have them double the chicken. I use lemon for dressing.

Excellent idea! I would do the same as well. – fromthericefields Aug 18 at 8:54

I tended bar there years ago.

I don't have a good answer for you though. The oil is soybean for the wings. I have had it once since going paleo and I noticed tummy upset. If you do get wings though just get them plain with some hot, medium or mild sauce on the side. Those sauces have the least ingredients.

The ribs are not horrible but they are fried in the same oil.

The salads are decent.

It's a tough one- BWW is one of the hardest places to avoid O6. Pretty much everything is fried. I think eating minimally is the way to go. Maybe take probiotics to help digestion?

Just eat the wings. It's a tasty cheat.

Ahh BWW! They just opened one of these in my town a few months ago. I'm not very picky when I go out; I pretty much just avoid the obvious gluten and enjoy myself, but I have been to my local BWW 3 times and have yet to have a decent experience. I would bring some dressing from home and get a salad.

They will grill your wings if you ask, so perhaps some grilled wings with hot sauce could be a decent choice. The hot, Blazin', medium, parmesan garlic, spicy garlic, wild, and Thai curry sauces all have <2 grams of carbs per serving.

Thai curry has gluten in it. – Caveman Truck May 7 2012 at 23:29

Skip it.

It's not worth forcing yourself and feeling sick about.

Chicken wings are nasty.

There are plenty of times when I will just opt out instead of going along for bad food just to be sociable.

I had a pizza lunch at work to worry about last week, so when they brought pizza I just picked up three slices, pulled off the topping and ate that, and threw the crust away. :)

I know..Order 25 wings, rip them apart to get the tiny morsel of chicken off them, then leave the rest in a big pile on the table. You won't get invited again. Problem solved.

Wings nasty? Maybe you have to spend some time in Buffalo to truly appreciate them, but I consider Buffalo wings one of the tastiest bar foods around. You can make them at home paleo-style, too. – WyldKard Feb 28 2012 at 0:50

There is absolutely no need to eat a food that will make you sick or uncomfortable!!! Please don't do that to yourselves. I am highly allergic to gluten dairy soy so i usually order a plain salad only. Trust me, I have been stared at many times. But it beats being hungry or ill or sitting at home missing out. As for the people who say eat their sauce, why dontcha read up on it a little first: http://parentsr.us/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Buffalo-Wild-Wings-Sauce-Seasoning-Allergen-Ingredient-Listing-2011.pdf

Seriously just 1 meal? Let it go, and why IF? Just let it slide, your body is not dumb and helpless, it will take care of itself.

Like me and my Shawarma lunches once a month doesn't kill me. I am learning not to be obsessive with food, just be Paleo, and RELAX!

As long as you stick with being Paleo you should be fine, chicken wings are meat, and Paleo – fromthericefields Aug 18 at 8:52
