What: The Paleo Summit (see also this post)

Who: Dr. Thomas O’Bryan – Gluten Sensitivity Expert

Topic: The Musculoskeletal Connection to Autoimmune Disease. The most basic Paleo Diet recommendation is the removal of gluten. But did you know that gluten sensitivity goes well beyond the digestive tract? Dr. O’Bryan reveals the latest research on how gluten consumption may lead to autoimmune disease, osteoporosis, and muscle pain without digestive symptoms.

What did you think of this presentation?

This one surprised me. This guy was not even on my radar screen and I almost skipped over the presentation. "More stuff on gluten? No thank you!" Well I'm so glad I didn't listen to myself. Very well done. This is an easy-to-understand presentation of some complex concepts. Almost anyone could listen to this and come away with a better understanding of so many of the issues surrounding gluten sensitivity and many of the related issues. I actually learned some new things so this is my favorite presentation thus far.

I'm with you, I'd never heard of this guy and was thinking blah, blah, blah more gluten & gut issues. But he's pretty compelling. – jj Feb 28 2012 at 22:56

I agree. I almost didn't listen to this presentation because it was another gluten post. (I know I get sick from it in various ways, so why would I listen to another talk about it?) Turns out I learned a LOT from this talk. I think it was really well done. He explained leaky gut issues a lot better than anyone I've read or listened to before. – blueballoon Feb 29 2012 at 0:11

I'm with you 100%. I've listened to and watched all 8 presentations and this one has been my favorite by far. – Primal Toad Feb 29 2012 at 1:51
+1. I think I'll refer folks to him whenever I get questions about gluten from now on. It was such a great reinforcement for me. – Karen P. Feb 29 2012 at 6:11

This one made me pretty sad. If you were privileged to read my medical history, you would see 7 or more chronic problems now linked directly to gluten-triggered autoimmune responses including migraine, the gallbladder I no longer have, mild loss of coordination/balance, etc., etc., etc.

At NO time did a medical professional ever have a clue about what the pattern suggested. They didn't even recognize autoimmunity let alone gluten sensitivity.

So now I have NO hope of justifying additional holiday cheats with wheat, rye or barley (I'd already figured that out, but STILL.)

This was another clear, well organized presentation. You can tell he's done this one many times.

Now this was someone who went past the generalities and presented the nitty-gritty stuff in a comprehensible manner - bravo for this.

But instead of bluntly advertising his supplement, I would have liked to know what exactly the ingredients in it are doing....

My ma and I both have forms of celiac, other members of my family are likely sensitive. His talk made everything a lot clearer. – Caleb the Hobbit Feb 28 2012 at 15:57
With respect, I needed this info. If you go to his site, the info on what's in the supplement packs is very clear. I'm not planning to order at this time, but if I had known about the packs a year ago I WOULD have purchased some. – Nance Feb 28 2012 at 19:22
Its very easy to use a weekly container and put the supplements in there once a week. – primallykosher Feb 29 2012 at 13:34

I really, really enjoyed this presentation. It's a great 101 on the gut and auto-immune disease. Given how much he dumbed it down for a lay audience (with all sorts of familiar metaphors) I suspect someone with a more expert knowledge may cringe, but it worked for me.

I particularly found the discussion about the differences between allergy, sensitivity, and intolerance helpful. For example, the skin prick tests only check for IgE anti-bodies and there are three others involved. Similarly, some blood tests only check for a specific gluten peptide, but there are lots of others. Finally, intolerance is neither an allergy or a sensitivity but an inability to digest a nutrient and thus create problems (like lactose intolerance as a result of the enzyme lactase).

He also has a great section in there which talks about the three things necessary for an auto-immune problem: a genetic susceptibiltiy, an environmental trigger (like gluten), and a leaky gut. If you have the latter two, then the result depends on the first. It could be celiacs (gut), but it could also be hashimotos (thyroid) or ADHD or autism (brain).

Interestingly, he's not down on all gluten and says the problematic one is the one in wheat, barley, and rye.

The promo for the supplement was way at the end of it and Sean brought it up. The goal of the supplement is to nutritionally support the healing that needs to occur after gluten is removed ... you can do this with a healthy diet, but for some folks, supplements can help this occur faster.

O'Bryan is stellar. He's published with other gluten experts. – grace Feb 28 2012 at 22:07

This was an awesome talk! Clear, concise, and of course, I learned a ton about gluten intolerance and its relation to gut health. My favorite Summit discussion so far.

Sean has done other interviews and call in shows with him, you can find them at the underground wellness podcast if you want to hear more. A lot of the same information, but great to hear callers questions...

This is great! What was his website again? I think my big issue with gluten has been its effects on my joints and muscles ceran wrap (apparently the body uses plastic rather than aluminum foil on the meat).

Using special kosher magic I found his website. thedr.com Its fancy and infomercial looking. He does have some great youtube videos to watch too. – primallykosher Feb 29 2012 at 3:06
Ha! I found it earlier without using kosher magic--cause I don't have any. However I am left-handed so I'm very creative. :-)) – Nance Feb 29 2012 at 3:13

This Dr. is a genius. If you missed you will need to see it somehow.

Test:

cyrexlabs.com

saliva first and then blood test

If you have a Biopsy then get an IEL count with it.

You need to 1) Stop Gluten 2) Heal dammage by taking more nutrients.

Very cool and very worth it. A summit in May on UW to discuss this even more.

Can't say enough about how cool this talk was.

If I had not had a cancelled appointment, I might have missed this one, too. I had never heard of him, so at least wanted to catch part of it just to see who he is. This presentation is the BEST so far. He really knocked it out of the park! GREAT information, very engaging, smart, passionate. I loved his analogies. I can't wait to see more stuff from this guy.

I really enjoyed this talk. He was a great speaker and I learnt so much. Things like what is the difference between and allergy and a sensitivity were very interesting to hear explained.

I hope to see him on the bill at many Paleo events in the future.
