I've asked some questions before regarding blood glucose values--but am continuing to feel like I have some "issues." Yesterday, for example, I ate a fairly carby (but paleo) lunch. My pre-meal BG was 70 (and I was ready to eat my arm off) and an hour after eating it was 103. Three hours later, I was still at around 100. I ran an errand and I would swear that I could feel the "drop." When I returned home, I had a value of 72--so I dropped about 30 points in the hour. (To summarize, at around 12:30 p.m. and at 3:45 I was at 100; at 4:45 was at 70.)
This is a consistent pattern with me. Is this drop "normal" for most people or is it generally a more gradual decline?
I've also been trying to find the magic number of carbs to eat/not eat to avoid this--anybody have any suggestions as to what has worked for them? Even though values in the upper 60s and low 70s are not technically problematic (from what I understand they are not even considered "hypoglycemic" values), I feel like crap when I am in the 60s, and I want to devour everything in sight. It then takes me a while to feel good, so I tend to overeat unless I make a real effort to limit my consumption. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions. By the way, I have previously had an OGTT that had over a 60-point drop in an hour, and my doctor told me I was perfectly normal.
I used the BG meter a lot controlling diabetes, but not recently. Yesterday I got it out, ate 150-200g of high GI carbs, and tested. The peak was 146 after 90 minutes, and dropped 10 points in the next 30 minutes. 5 hours after the meal I was starving and BG was down to 79. I think the dropoff rate is related to where you start, as well as how insulin resistant you are. My diabetes was diagnosed when I was testing 200 fasting.
When I woke my BS was 199, I had a cup of coffee with sugar free creamer and truvia. After a shower, I felt very thirsty, and shaky, my BS dropped to 96 in one hour. Three nights prior I woke to extreme thirst, shakes and a pounding heart, my blood sugar was 38, after eating tiny candy bars, drinking juice, and nearly killing myself it finally rose to 90, I will never do that again. I am unsure of the extremes, does anyone else have these problems?
