Since childhood I've hated sugary foods/drinks. No matter how thirsty, I can't stand to drink soda, not even a sip. Eating the icing from a cake if I must do it to be polite is awful. Chocolate chip cookies disgust me. I especially hate sugar in combination with oily or fatty ingredients. Yet I enjoy fruit and whipped cream and love bread and butter. I have never dieted or worried about my weight and have generally held physical jobs that keep me active and hungry. I'm curious how common this sugar aversion is and whether people develop it because of diet (my childhood diet was very healthy: whole foods including some honey, yet my siblings have normal high-sugar American tastes). For example, I adore coffee and crave it at any time of day or night, but if someone accidentally gives me sweetened coffee I find it vile. I'm not particularly fussy about anything else, so this sugar thing seems odd to me. I really feel like my body is saying "this is poison." It seems that the paleo diet supports the idea that sugar at high dosage is a poison, but I don't see much discussion of people's tastebuds experiencing it as such. Do others?

Ask your mom about her pregnancy & your early childhood. Some of my clients have phobias that are related to a negative experience their mom had when she was pregnant with them or one they had before they were verbal. Since our tastes are formed in-utero, it makes sense to me that you may associate sugar with something negative--and it could be due to your mom's pregnancy experience. |

I really wonder if you're deficient in vitamin a/d/k or possibly protein. Sugar stimulates an increase in metabolism which requires more nutrition. |

Same here! I cannot stand sugar or sweetened food. Hate it! Even as far as fruit is concerned, I always preferred the not yet ripe (sour) apples, green bananas, etc. I love all berries, because they cannot be altered to taste sweet. Even pure orange juice from Florida is too sweet for me. Don't know, but I don't remember the oranges I ate in Europe in the 50s as being that sweet. I like pure lemon juice. :-) The only condiments I put on everything are Dijon mustard and wine vinegar, that stupid (suddenly fashionable!) balsamic vinegar being way too sweet for me. Why would I want a sweet tasting vinegar anyway?? It is almost impoosible to find unsweetened food in the USA. It really p....me off! Cannot even eat ice cream in the USA. Way too sweet! You have to go to Italy to find out that ice cream is supposed to be 'creamy', not 'sugary'! |

I too have begun looking for an answer to this same question. I have not liked sugar (since birth according to my parents) and if by chance I do eat/drink something sweet unknowingly it makes me extremely ill. I've been afraid to ask a dotor since my last doctor accused me of being a hypochondriac. I recently discussed this issue with my G.I. who suggested seeing an endocronologist. John's Hopkins blamed it on a liver dysfuntion I was born with. When I tried researching it further about two years ago I was told that Pediatric records are destroyed once the patient turns 21. I am worried that I may incur further complications from lack of sugar in my diet especially after having my gallbladder removed last February and a growth discovered on my liver. Much like you I do not like anything sweet. be it natural or artificially occuring. No soda, cake, cookies, juices, fruits, candies, etc. and as I mentioned before if I do happen to accidently ingest icing or other sweet things not only do I gag from the taste but it severly upsets my stomach to the point of nausea or vomitting. Unfortunately I do not have any answers yet but you are not alone in this. |
