I'm on my 5th week of Paleo and I am absolutely exhausted in the afternoons. Any common reasons why this could be? Could I be missing something from my diet? The obvious thing would be that I'm not getting enough sleep at night, but I'm getting about 7 hours (about the most I can get with two little kids). I've been doing high-intensity workouts several days a week. Any insight would be appreciated!

Need more info. What are you eating? Are you restricting carbs? What are your goals(fat loss, health, etc.)? What is several? What type of HIIT? Crossfit-like or short sprints? Are you lifting? – Susan Feb 28 2012 at 21:44
Mandy, could be lots of things. Dr. Emily Deans' blog might be of interest to you. evolutionarypsychiatry.blogspot.com/p/… She, too, is a super-busy mother and has small children. – PaleoGran Feb 28 2012 at 21:46
Today I had a banana, blueberries, coconut milk, and almonds for breakfast (about a cup total) for breakfast, a hard-boiled egg and 1/2 an apple before my workout. Salad w/ coconut chicken, egg and avocado for lunch, a lara bar (not typical, but I had a sweet craving), dinner will be roasted chicken and roasted veggies. I've been doing crossfit...the class is 2x per week. I do the off-days workouts on my own, but they are from my crossfit class (cardio/lifting/jumping rope/burpees). Total of 6 workouts a week. My goal is to lose weight. I've lost some, but I have about 10 pounds to lose. – twochickadeez Feb 28 2012 at 21:50

Mandy, where's the beef? A little tough love here: Your breakfast was carbs. I used to think that a diet like yours was ladylike. It caused me serious health problems. I'd guess you had sweet cravings because your blood sugar was low after a carby breakfast and a workout using up glycogen. Sorry for the tough comments. Are you still nursing? You might like to read Ambimorph's posts and comments. I think you are not getting enough nutrients in your food plan. We need ruminant meat, meat fat, bone/meat broths, lots of egg yolks, offal, butter, fish, and then come plants. ... – PaleoGran Feb 28 2012 at 22:00

Inadequate sleep + crossfit 6x/wk => difficulties. Until you can get enough sleep, you should at least halve the crossfit. – Michael Feb 29 2012 at 0:04

If you are doing crossfit or a crossfit style workout 6x a week, you are most likely wearing out your body. In order to recover from that, you probably need more food and a little more rest. I would say either slow down the workout slightly, eat more, and/or try to get some additional rest.

I don't do crossfit, but I do powerlift and the biggest culprit of being tired and achy is not eating enough.

Thanks for the feedback! I might cut back a bit or at least take a nap when my girls nap. – twochickadeez Feb 28 2012 at 23:09
I skipped my workout this morning. I might do part of it later on today, but I'm taking it easy. I feel really great today...not at all tired. – twochickadeez Feb 29 2012 at 17:36

You may need to eat more food.

A few things:

If you were eating SAD before, you may be detoxing. That takes energy.

You may just flat-out need a nap.

You may not be eating enough food.

OR

all 3.

I was eating a "real food diet" before...nothing processed. Still might be detoxing from grains though. Your post made me laugh because I honestly never even considered that I might NEED a nap! – twochickadeez Feb 28 2012 at 22:01

I've just gone full paleo (about a week and a half in) and feel not quite at my peak as far as energy goes. The last thing I kicked were grains (rye bread in particular), and from what I've read you can go through a bit of a withdrawal. I'm guessing that's what I'm experiencing and maybe you as well, I'm hoping it doesn't last too much longer cos I do get the occasional craving for a nice piece of toast with a slab of peanut butter on it, lol.

I hope the withdrawal doesn't last too long for you! I still crave chocolate! – twochickadeez Feb 28 2012 at 23:10

Try dispersing each of your breakfast items across each meal, and then make your breakfast fat (grassfed butter, coconut oil, olive oil, bacon grease, etc.) & protein.

Great suggestion, thanks! – twochickadeez Feb 28 2012 at 23:09

I just returned home from a 12 mile hike and I feel great. In fact, I could go out for a run right now and have plenty of energy. I know what you're thinking: no big deal, I do Crossfit, I could walk 12 miles on my hands, in fact I’ve done it and it’s a WOD called “Knuckles”. Here is the part that will blow your mind though. I did not eat a banana, or an apple, or a Lara Bar before my hike. I didn't eat anything before my hike, or during the hike. I had been fasting since dinner last night and then hiked today beginning at Noon and ending at about 4 o'clock. Then I broke my fast. Doing this sort of thing takes some getting used to.

I know that I'm teasing you a bit and I don't mean to be mean, but honestly, if I ate a carby/sugary breakfast like you did, I would be really tired in the afternoons as well. I'm not suggesting that you don't eat carbs. I'm not afraid of carbs. I eat a moderate carb diet, but I do keep the carbs limited to my post workout meals. If I eat them early in the day they seem to make me hungry and then crash.

Good luck with things. Stick with it and start trying some changes. See what works best for you. I would start with added protein. By the way, based on your diet I just bought some shares of Tyson Chicken (TSN closed today at $16.12 per share – I think a one year price target of $100 is reasonable). Again, kidding, but perhaps add some protein sources other than chicken and eggs.

Oh, you're funny;) I have been doing fasts on the days I don't do the xfit class. I should pay attention and see if i have more energy on those days. I fast from about 9pm until 1pm the next day. For the record, I do eat other sources of protein besides chicken, but I had some left-overs. And PS, I haven't learned to walk on my hands....yet;) – twochickadeez Feb 28 2012 at 23:16

I kid because I care. Seriously, I like Crossfit. I started doing it in 2004 at the insistence of a friend at work (fitness was important to this work). It definitely served its purpose for me then. Now, I see some flaws with the protocol, but that's another matter. I read your comment above, try adding grass fed ruminants to your diet. They are probably treated pretty humanely, at least up to the point that they get shot in the head. And lastly, keep practicing the handstands. I never got great at them, but frequent practice will really improve the skill - like any skill. – Ralph Furley Feb 29 2012 at 1:55

You could probably benefit from more protein in your breakfast. You could have what you listed and just make a smoothie out of it with a raw egg or two mixed in. A rule of thumb I've heard is 30g of protein within 30 mins of waking. Also your cortisol could be pushed too high with all the workouts - try some slow light weights in parasympathetic exercises with deep, slow breathing as an alternative to a couple of workouts a week. I also tend to get too paranoid about burning calories daily with hectic workouts but sometimes it can be counterproductive and I need to remind myself that it's not just a matter of calories in/calories out.

Thanks for the feedback! I think I need to stop worrying about all of this. I'm so anxious to get into shape, I could be pushing it too hard. Maybe I'll try to do some yoga a couple times a week instead. – twochickadeez Feb 29 2012 at 13:10

More fat?

It seems like most of your foods were lower in saturated fats, with coconut milk and your eggs being the largest contributors. When I first started I ate a lot of bacon for breakfast to help me get through the day. I would sometimes not even be hungry for lunch. I seem to have gotten better at burning fat, though, because now I can do 4 slices and 3 eggs and have room for more.

Cheese/butter are good dairy fats to add if you allow it (I don't). I do use Lindt 85% dark chocolate as a good high-fat snack (55% RDI in one serving).

If you are crazy like me you could also try sleeping on the floor (or any hard surface). I find that my sleep cycles are more natural than when in a bed once you get used to the newness. It also gives you natural alignment and costs nothing.

Chocolate? Did somebody say, chocolate?!?! Done! Thanks for the info. I had two eggs scrambled with coconut oil and cauliflower for breakfast this morning, avocado, and coffee with coconut milk. That's better, right? – twochickadeez Feb 29 2012 at 13:12
lol, I did pull the C-word. It's amazing how much of a lift true dark chocolate gives you. I quit coffee when first on the diet, and when I ate my first half-serving of 90% I felt like I just took crack or something. I highly recommend the lindt 85%, or 90% if you can stomach it. They are the only reasonably-priced brand I've found to not use dairy. That is better. Avocados are an amazing paleo superfood, but I can't seem to keep myself interested in them after I've had it for a few days. Any good condiments/recipes for avocados I should know about? – kashperanto Feb 29 2012 at 16:20
I just bought the lindt 85% today! Exited to have a piece later. I don't have any recipes with avocado (other than guac), but I'm pretty sure I will never tire of them. Eating some right now, actually! – twochickadeez Feb 29 2012 at 17:33
I would make sure not to eat it too late; theobromine (the stimulant in chocolate) lasts a lot longer than caffeine. It is all-around better for you than caffeine, though: xocoatl.org/caffeine.htm – kashperanto Feb 29 2012 at 23:29
Unfortunately I haven't had it yet and I think I missed my window. I'm really sensitive to caffeine. – twochickadeez Mar 1 2012 at 1:45
