[before I say anything, lemme just express how terrible I feel regarding my asked questions:answered questions ratio: REALLY REALLY! Thank you all for being so helpful! moving on. read the bolded parts if you don't care about specifics :p]
Okay! Soo, I posted in December inquiring about the possible cause of my month-and-a-half-long bout of cold symptoms. Someone answered that I might've just been unlucky and that there were some nasty viruses going around, which seemed to be true for me as I did eventually recover--but only when I left my home in Tucson, Arizona for some California grass.. literally! In the beginning of January I went to stay with my boyfriend in LA for a month, and the trip seemed to coincide with my FINALLY feeling better.
Not only did my cold symptoms subside, but I felt generally more energetic and, I guess, healthier than I had back home in Tucson. My eating habits while there were far from perfect--my diet mainly consisted of eggs, bananas, corn tortillas, cheese, lots of avocados, lengua (powerhouse!), beer, SILK coconut milk and home-cooked meals of the omega-6-laden variety (my boyfriend's mom ONLY uses grapeseed oil as she's heard it's 'heart-healthy')--usually chicken of some sort with a side of potatoes and veggies. I also got LOTS of sleep in a pitch-black room (usually 10+ hours a night) but almost no sunlight--we'd go out at night, come home late and sleep until pretty much the afternoon (Vacation, thankyouverymuch) but I did supplement with vitamin D3.
I should probably also mention that while I was there, I gained about 7 pounds (likely mostly water retention due to increased carbs).
As soon as I got back home, I realized I had a UTI which I did manage to knock out without antibiotics (garlic megadoses + cranberry concentrate + tons of water). I was prescribed antibiotics, but I only took one dose, as the next morning I had reeally bad diarrhea coupled with vomiting and a fever. (7 pounds of weight gain = GONE.) At first I thought this was a bad reaction to the antibiotic, but the same day, my sister, who had also recently visited a doctor's office, had the same symptoms, as did her boyfriend subsequently. I was able to surmise afterward that the symptoms I had were due to my having caught whatever virus was going around. Only lasted a day--no big deal, right?
Well, I only enjoyed a day free of symptoms before I caught a cold--a week and a half ago. the symptoms aren't as bad, but they're still present (sniffles, constant need to clear my throat, mild cough) and I'm wondering why, throughout the whole time I've been strictly paleo, I've felt shitty in some way, and why I felt awesome when my diet was definitely lacking.
Does anyone have any clue as to why this might be happening, and what I can do to hack my sniffles/immunity?
More info: I'm 20, 5'5" and 114 pounds. With the exception of January, I've been paleo since November. My diet consists of (conventional) eggs, (mostly grain-fed) red meat, occasional chicken, yams, lots of green veggies, minimal fruit, occasional greek yogurt, occasional corn tortillas, coconut oil, herbal teas w/ apple cider vinegar and some nuts. I strength-train (not heavily) 3-4 times a week and dance (intense 60s style go-go dancing!) 2-3 times a week. I'm still taking the cranberry extract and I supp Mg and 2,000IU D3 daily. I get about 7-8 hrs of sleep a night. I also live with a bunny, if that makes a difference (I'm only allergic to cats and pollen, afaik).
I hope I gave enough info.. and I hope you all can offer up some suggestions! Thanks (:
