Ok. Not the most critical problem in the universe, but here goes.
Lot's of health issues have improved with the paleo diet, but lately my skin is really losing it's elasticity - which I think is due to losing collagen, but correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm 50, so it could be just my aging process and there's nothing to do about it, but maybe there is some way to tweak my diet. It's frustrating, because other than my skin, I look a lot younger than my age.
I get a regular supply of bone broth (but not from pastured hens - can't get it).
I eat 50-60% fat. I keep my Vitamin D level around 80 ng/ml.
In addition to regular gelatin, I take supplemental Zinc Picolinate (50 mg), Vitamin C 2000 mg and Vitamin E (400 IU). These have made a HUGE difference!
My skin is looking younger, even with a lot of sun & wind exposure (I live in Santa Fe, NM) and I've been told I look 40 (I will be 49 this month.)
I use an aloe vera-based lotion around my eyes & mouth daily and a glycolic acid cream nightly 3 x/week. I wash mostly in water & very occasionally use Kiss My Face Olive oil/Aloe Soap.
Eggs and berries are probably the best things. Good luck!
Have you lost weight on paleo? I know that fat makes wrinkles disappear. :) Is it just your face, or is it everywhere? It might be aging, but at 50 there wouldn't be any harm in consulting with a dermatologist.
I have a genetic condition that makes my collagen faulty, but oddly, it contributes to my looking younger.
You mentioned chicken broth but I get a whole lot more gelatin and mostly-dissolved cartilage from my beef bone broths. I literally fill my slow-cooker with beef bones (at first, the lid won't even sit down) and I don't remove the bones until they're clean no matter how many cycles of cooking and over-night chilling that takes. My current favorites are vertically-slice beef feet but I also include other beef bones.
So far, my skin is shrinking much more comfortably than it did 5-6 years ago on my last yo-yo cycle. At 64, I don't expect it to shrink all the way but then I really expected to be a LOT more saggy at this point.
So, along with fruit for repair, etc., I'd definitely main-line beef bone broth. In the fridge it should be like hard jello and I eat a bunch of it 3 days out of 5. I also leave all the meat and gummy/chewy bits in there so I don't waste anything good for me.
