Hi guys,

My friends and I are visiting our old University for an annual bar crawl.

I know the perils of excess drinking...but, I drink rarely and I'm looking forward to this event. I don't plan on remaining wasted for 12 hours straight, though I will probably have several drinks over the course of the day and into the night.

Does anyone (those in college?) have advice on the best meal options to have over the course of the day. Should I stick with mainly protein, mainly fat, or my normal habits? I am fully paleo with the exception of heavy cream. Are there any foods that I should avoid while drinking? (Those that might make me feel worse the next day etc. due to the alcohol combo). I'm planning on bringing a lunch box (I'm sooo cool) or snack pack so that I can easily avoid the slew of pizza places.

Thank you!

I heard "bar crawl" from across the room and came running. I would avoid all wheat and other than that, just hang loose and have fun. I also like Joshua's answer below for recovery post party action. – Ralph Furley Feb 29 2012 at 18:41
Forgive my naiveté, but how are questions like this any different from asking "what's the best supplement plan for a day of marathon donut eating?" – malapert Mar 1 2012 at 6:05

Malapert - booze is the glue that holds a lot of social circles together, whether we like it or not. Donut eating probably doesn't hold the same importance to most people in their social lives. I agree with you that it's not ideal, but it is what it is. Of course, we can do our bit to work on changing it. – Ralph Furley Mar 1 2012 at 13:59

Thanks for all the great answers guys! @malapert, it's a once in a while thing. For me, occasional flexibility is key to making paleo a lifestyle. If I'm going to splurge, why not see if I can do anything to make it easier on my body? – Boswell Mar 1 2012 at 18:30

This blog post written by ph's very own Stabby is really the authority on binge drinking. Take a look!

Martin at leangains advises to only drink spirit, and to eat predominantly protein before, during, and after while avoiding fats and carbs.

Personally, I have two crawls I attend yearly - and not only do I drink 1 full glass of water for every alcoholic beverage, I only eat one meal the day after, a big salty fatty hangover-curing breakfast, and I try to spend some time in a sauna or hottub to sweat while I drink even more water. The fasting tends to speed up the repair of any gut from any indiscretions, and the hot tub and extra water to drink tends to speed up the repair of my immune system and general well-being after a day of damage.

I avoid gluten during the crawl, but still end up eating crap (pub fries, tacos, bunless cheeseburgers).

Thanks for directing me to leangains, it's a great source of info! As a gin gal, spirits only sounds ideal! – Boswell Mar 1 2012 at 18:23

I am doing the Erin Express bar crawl in Philadelphia this weekend and the following weekend. It's amazing. The best meal for before, during, and after the bar crawl has to be 4-5 eggs scrambled with bacon and hot sauce. If you do dairy, cover it in cheese.

Eggs are also a good source of choline and help protect the liver. – Paleo2.0 Feb 29 2012 at 18:04
Sounds great! I love eggs, and they're cheap too :) – Boswell Mar 1 2012 at 18:20

From personal experience:

  1. Take a good multi vitamin. B12 & magnesium are really helpful.
  2. Drink lots of water that day
  3. If you are on a LC or VLC diet, make an exception and have some greasy fried potatoes or equivalent. Your liver will thank you for not having to work triple time.
  4. If you are not at risk of falling asleep and drowing... take a bath afterward. Don't take a bath if you're going to pass out. Fishing dead bodies out of the tub is pleasant for no one.
  5. I agree with the above statement of avoiding gluten. This probably means avoiding bar food. Eat first.

I drink enough on occasion that I wake up drunk. I've been experimenting with the following: I wait until I get the hangover headache, which is delayed since I'm still drunk when I wake, and drink a glass of milk. I think that is about the right level of carbs to kill off any alcohol induced hypoglycemia without overshooting. So far, it's been working for me. But I'm VLC when not boozing.

Please, do not take Tylenol (Acetaminophen) during or after drinking.

Thanks for the low carb comment, I've been unintentionally LC lately as I've been running around! – Boswell Mar 1 2012 at 18:21

My husband swears by this trick before you go to bed. He never gets hung over anymore. He drinks 8 ounces of coconut water, A glass of regular water and pedialite. Also B12 prevents a hangover so eat shellfish because they are high in B12. I agree with Joshua to drink a glass of water for every liquor drink. Also, be sure to drink top shelf liquor without sugar etc.Good Luck Have Fun.

I have heard that pedialite works magic for recovery. My friend said that MMA fighters use it post weigh-in to recover from the cut. It's an anecdote but probably quite powerful. – JakeA Feb 29 2012 at 21:30

I would think soluble fibre (starch) would help - doesn't it help slow absorption of the alcohol, or at least cushion the gut and lessen the GI impact?

The old-fashioned low tech way of booze control was to eat a lot of fatty food before hitting the bar trail. It worked.
