I'm curious as to what most people think is a good description of strenuous exercise, if somebody asked for a qualifying statement.
ie. strenuous entails "exercising to exhaustion or extreme fatigue"

If my brain and body feels warm, kind of oozy, a little limp but i'm grinning ear to ear - that's when I know I have successfully completed a round of strenuous exercise. EDIT --> For me, someone who was a competitive athlete, attempting to enjoy "non-strenuous" activities was a huge issue. It was always go go go from middle school on. Many factors finally got me to slow down and figure out what may be a better scenario. Yoga, acupuncture, long walks instead of public transportation, lifting without finishing with HIIT/METCON, mobility work, falling asleep in the sun, chasing after my dog plus mixing in METCON/HIIT gives me that nice body brain ooze - the satisfaction. The variety pleases me - I don't have to go balls out to feel good. Like I always say "every body is different" and this is how I roll :) |

My subjective take is that I know when my exercise was indeed "strenuous" (or "intense") when I am both:

Strenuous is a subjective term that has no objective parameters. Since you ask for our qualifying statement of strenuous exercise, my definition of it would be needing carpet time to recover..... |

Any movement which if performed correctly continues to be a challenge even as your ability to perform it correctly continues to increase. A movement can be strenuous in its simplest form at first but once mastered can continue to be strenuous as you increase its complexity, thus continuing to improve your strength, technique and overall health as you utilize, practice and perform it. |

It's exercise that you need recovery time from. Check out Horizon by the BBC though, cos it seems that if all you are after is improving your VO2max and insulin response, all you need do are 3 sessions of 1 minute a week. Yes, 1 minute. |
