I'm curious as to what most people think is a good description of strenuous exercise, if somebody asked for a qualifying statement.

ie. strenuous entails "exercising to exhaustion or extreme fatigue"

stren·u·ous per ju·ba  [stren-yoo-uhs] [jooo-buhh] adjective

  1. characterized by vigorous exertion, as action, efforts, life, etc.: woah, that was really a strenuous morning of lifting..
  2. demanding or requiring vigorous exertion; laborious: i wish i had superpowers so i could beam my sigg over here, i think that wod nearly killed me!
  3. vigorous, energetic, or zealously active: i'm totally going to skip up that big hill for a tasty coffee after today's workout and some extra pullups practice.

If my brain and body feels warm, kind of oozy, a little limp but i'm grinning ear to ear - that's when I know I have successfully completed a round of strenuous exercise.

EDIT --> For me, someone who was a competitive athlete, attempting to enjoy "non-strenuous" activities was a huge issue. It was always go go go from middle school on. Many factors finally got me to slow down and figure out what may be a better scenario. Yoga, acupuncture, long walks instead of public transportation, lifting without finishing with HIIT/METCON, mobility work, falling asleep in the sun, chasing after my dog plus mixing in METCON/HIIT gives me that nice body brain ooze - the satisfaction. The variety pleases me - I don't have to go balls out to feel good. Like I always say "every body is different" and this is how I roll :)

If I can achieve the same performance within the same day, it wasn't strenuous.

It's exercise that you need recovery time from. Check out Horizon by the BBC though, cos it seems that if all you are after is improving your VO2max and insulin response, all you need do are 3 sessions of 1 minute a week. Yes, 1 minute.

I couldn't access the BBC site from the US. Can you put into a nutshell the difference between the 1 minute "Horizon" workout vs. the "marathon-like" 4 minute Tabata? Thanks – shah78 Mar 1 2012 at 18:11
Sure, the basic premise is that you do 3, 20 second sets of maximum effort, 3 times a week. That's it. So get those sprinting shoes on. :) – Spence Mar 2 2012 at 9:20

Any movement which if performed correctly continues to be a challenge even as your ability to perform it correctly continues to increase. A movement can be strenuous in its simplest form at first but once mastered can continue to be strenuous as you increase its complexity, thus continuing to improve your strength, technique and overall health as you utilize, practice and perform it.

Strenuous is a subjective term that has no objective parameters. Since you ask for our qualifying statement of strenuous exercise, my definition of it would be needing carpet time to recover.....

My subjective take is that I know when my exercise was indeed "strenuous" (or "intense") when I am both:

  1. sweating
  2. out of breath
