Possible Duplicate:
How many bananas per day is too much?

Hi! I eat between 3 and 6 bananas a day. I'm male, active (WODs at least 5 times/week plus weekly boxing and yoga classes) and eat a well-balanced paleo diet, aside from my banana addiction (and the occasional almond binge). Weight is ~225 @6'4".

So, hackers, how many bananas is too many bananas?

And this exact question was asked before. (And the top answer was 31) – Dave S. Mar 1 2012 at 18:35

Dave - Gaston (ripped guy from Beauty & the Beast) had 5 dozen eggs every morning to "help him get large" and seems to have suffered no ill effects, except, of course, being obnoxious and having too much body hair. – Milla Mar 1 2012 at 19:04

Gaston had the best song by far in B&tB. I wish my kids would appreciate the lyrics. #offtopic – Laina Mar 1 2012 at 20:34

The biggest possible issue I see is the foods are you may not be eating in favor of the bananas. Do you eat other fruits or only bananas? Are you eating good quantities of veggies? I think a quest for variety in the diet is important so I'd just question if you couldn't be eating a few other things in place of at least some of those bananas.

Thanks, Shari! I eat other fruits, but mostly bananas. I eat dates, tomatoes and avos fairly often as well. But I do eat loads of veggies, so hopefully that makes up for it... – Billerson Mar 1 2012 at 18:50

If you feel good, look good, & perform well, then I don't think you've yet reached too many bananas!

....unless you're uncomfortable with your 'addiction' -- then go cold turkey for a few days & see how you feel. Otherwise, YUM. I wish I could eat 3-6 bananas a day!

If you're where you want to be health-wise, and aren't seeing any negative effects from that amount of bananas, then I say go for it. Sounds like you are very active; that level of carbs should be perfectly fine. You might want to think about changing up your carb sources just for a little nutrient variety, but other than that, bananas are great. I usually eat one or two every day.

My son could eat that many in a day too, and LOVED THEM.....we wondered why he had such runny diapers. We stopped the nanners and he has better stool. Gut irritation? Food allergy? I dunno, but we'll be laying off them for a few months. But, that is just a cautionary tale. If you feel good on them and don't have runny diapers :), then I'm with Shari on the other precaution of nutrient displacement.

That's very helpful. I may have gone overboard without considering how it's affecting my digestion. I'll check my diapers next chance I get :) Thanks! – Billerson Mar 1 2012 at 18:52

I'm just going to echo what other people are saying. If you feel good eating them, then you're good to go. Just don't let your consumption of bananas overtake your consumption of other important nutrients.

You'll know how many "too many" is because when you get there, your body will REVOLT! Mine can't take more than five in a day. I did. Though I had been VLC for a few weeks and my body was craving carbs and that was the most "carby" thing in the house. Let's just say the outcome wasn't pretty. Bloating, stomach pains, and other fun symptoms. Don't be me.

Enjoy your bananas to fulfill your own happiness but also watch for the high fungal qualities of them. Also, it may be beneficial to consider where you live and how readily available fresh, organically grown bananas are. If they dont grow freely where you live, then perhaps more than a couple a week can quickly become too many. Otherwise, if you dont care about that aspect of it and you just cant get enough then go bananas!

I think you've entered the wrong blog. The raw vegans seem to be doing that.

I had a banana craving this week. I bought a huge bunch and ate 3-4 in a sitting until they were gone. Other than increasing my daily carb intake (slightly), can't say they had any effect other than hitting the spot with deliciousness!
