I'm new to paleo and I've planning on slowly easing myself into the lifestyle. I don't eat red meat or poultry (not for political reasons, I just don't like it). I love seafood and vegetables, but they are low fat. What are some good ways to get more fat into my diet? (Aside from butter, which is great. But I need MOAR FAT).

Coconut oil, bone broth (if you eat that), eggs, red palm oil or palm kernel oil, ... – Korion Mar 2 2012 at 13:50
Interesting - I assumed bone broth was low fat. It's definitely something I've been planning to do. – jane1111 Mar 2 2012 at 13:55

Fatty fish (salmon/mackerel/tuna/sardines/etc.), eggs, coconut oil, coconut milk, avocados, nuts & seeds, cheese, cream, yoghurt, kefir, bacon, olive oil, macademia nut oil, olives, cod liver oil, palm oil, bone marrow/broth, lard, tallow. Just be a little careful with the sources that have high n6 (nuts/seeds/bacon/lard). And, of course, avoid vegetable and seed oils (mayo/salad dressings/processed food). – Dave S. eggs, olive oil, lard and dripping - if you eat that.

oily fish too.

but sorry to say without meat, you will never be optimal, harsh but true. :)

Yeah, I am starting to realize that. I am trying to talk myself into introducing pate into my diet, for the fat and liver-tastic goodness. – jane1111 Mar 2 2012 at 13:50

You don't think you can have an optimal diet with just seafood? I disagree. Maybe without flesh in total, but I think fish can probably supply you with all you need from animal products. Fat can come from other sources (coconut oil being one). To the OP, do you eat eggs? Egg yolks are a great source of good fat and nutrients. Making aioli and serving it with seafood is a great way to get more fat. – blueballoon Mar 2 2012 at 14:03

There is evidence that at one time humans got down to just a few thousand on the east coast of Africa--we almost went extinct (the last ice-age was a drought-age in sub-saharan Africa). And, the way they survived was by learning to exist off the ocean. Fish, shellfish, etc... Anyway, I don't see why you couldn't build a diet around seafood, given that humans have been eating it forever, and over the centuries there have been many human civilizations that have used seafood as their primary "meat" source. – Talldog Mar 2 2012 at 14:32
meat to me is all sources...fish meat cow meat cat dog or snake meat. the meat of any animal is meat whether we eat it or not :) (i dont eat cats or dogs or snakes fyi!) ill stand by my comment of if you dont eat meat, you will never be optimal – badly_dubbed Mar 2 2012 at 15:46
Uh, I think the OP eats seafood. – blueballoon Mar 2 2012 at 16:14

Of course! I always forget about coconut. I know coconut milk is also high fat. Shrimp thai curry sounds good. – jane1111 Mar 2 2012 at 13:51

If you are eating seafood it is important to eat the organ meats of fish to get vitamin K2 if you are not eating other sources of vitamin K2 in your diet.

You've just gotten some of the best suggestions in the previous posts. Eat fatty fish, add avocados, eggs, lots and lots of good oils, and eat nuts. Fat, healthy fat, should not be a problem with all the great sources out there. I love a spoonful of coconut oil as a snack.

Cheese glorious cheese. I've been living on crab melts for months. When crab season ends I switch to tuna melts.

Stir-fry your vegetables in lots of coconut oil. It might taste funny the first few times, but after a while you'll find that you'll begin to like it. Coconut oil has an almost perfect omega3 to omega6 ratio. This will help to decrease any inflammation you might have in your body.

I think it's not so much coconut oil has a fantastic O6:O3 ration, but that there is so little of either in it. – Celton Mar 2 2012 at 23:40

If cheese is paleo then I've been wronging myself for over a year now. I'm gonna go make an icecream sundae with melted cheese and bacon sprinkles now. Seriously though, Carlson's Fish oil or the equivalent Vitamin Shoppe brand have a lemon flavor and almost no fishy taste (that I can detect). Use that as a salad dressing with apple cider vinegar. I like to soak peppers in the apple cider to give it a kick.

Time to do right by cheese maybe. Second cave on the left as you leave Lascaux. 50% fat, 50% protein. And let me know which cave they bottle the fish oil in. Or which cave they make the bottles in. – thhq Mar 2 2012 at 15:18
