The harsh chemicals reek for drain cleaners. I'm looking for alternatives - pre-made or make myself. Thanks!

1/4 cup baking soda, followed by 1/4 cup vinegar.

Wait 5 min and pour in a kettle of boiling water.

Will dissolve grease & soap scum, but won't break down a big wad of hair (ask me how I know!)

Lye should do the trick on the hair. – Matt Mar 2 2012 at 18:53
My mom always did this, so she passed this on to me! We've never had problems with our drains, so it seems to be working! – JeJ Mar 3 2012 at 1:16

Most drain cleaners are some sort of caustic (basic) compound. Simple solution of lye should do the trick.

+1, I use a little bit of pure lye in some hot water. – raney Mar 3 2012 at 1:57

Nothing beats a drain auger/snake.

For hair, etc., there are enzymatic drain openers that are VERY effective -- and they can be used weekly to keep the drains clean as well.

I like Earthworm Natural Enzyme-Based Family-Safe Drain Cleaner

I too use Earthworm. It seems to work better than others.
