I'm a big guy, very big. 6'5" 300lbs. I recently upped my Carbs after months of VLC and found that my weight loss didn't stall, it went faster.

If I were to eat this diet what do you think my results would be?

Tubers - Yams, Waxy-type potatoes predominantly. Rice - In small quantities. Fruit - Oranges, melon, fresh and frozen berries mostly. Meat - 4oz or less per serving, 1 serving per meal. (2 eggs from breakfast, some broth or gelatin for lunch and a 4oz piece of meat with supper) Veggies - Maybe a bit, but truthfully I don't ever crave these.

Factors -

Quite overweight still Low body temperature Average Pulse 50-60 (I can get my BP into the 190's during peak 8 style workouts with no serious problems) Haven't had recent blood work but digging out the last physical I had at 450lbs I had Average BP (120/77), low pulse, and within range cholesterol, blood sugar, T3/T4 etc..

Will I stall? Gain weight? Develop liver problems (fatty liver from sugar)? Lose Muscle mass and strength? Will I lose massive amounts of fat, gain huge amounts of muscle and come out looking like a Bodybuilder?

Predictions?

Wheres the meat? The reason it went faster after reintroducing carbs is because it kick started your metabolism. Try being vlc or lc (under 50 grams) for five days and than do over 150+. You will definitely break your plateau. Go high fat during lc and lower fat, higher carb on your refeed days.

Re: Meat - I actually wanted to see if Paleo was about food type and quality Vs. Macro-nutrient ratios. Is it the high-protein and high-fat that does it or is it avoidance of NAD's? – Satchmo Mar 3 2012 at 2:38

Low body weight? Low pulse? Do you also have problems with constipation? Those are all symptoms of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Overweight is too. I agree with Chelsea that you probably kick started your metabolism. If that's what happened, it's only a temporary thing. Hashi's people need to eat lots of fat, protein and low carb veggies. Berries only for their fruit. They need to balance their omega 3/6 fat ratio. Think grassfed beef, coconut oil and organic veggies. Makes for a great stir fry.

So to answer your question, I think you'll stall and gain. Reason I'm saying that: Been there done that. :(

It's possible. I'm in the middle of immigrating so I don't have health insurance. I had dry skin on VLC, adding fruit and starch in (moderate amounts, still low-carb) took care of that and now the only dry patches are areas where I am losing serious inches. Don't really have any digestive issues, at least not consistently. – Satchmo Mar 3 2012 at 2:37

If you're doing a lot of heavy lifting, I would say you'll see definite strength gains- glycogen-filled muscles recover faster, plus you'll have more fuel for heavy workouts. I'd think about upping your protein intake though. Weight gain? Not if you're eating at/below maintenance. Fatty liver?? Definitely not, unless you were on the edge of it before, which it doesn't sound like. If it's working for you and you feel good, go for it!

Avoiding vegetable oil is a good way to lower Omega 6 and lose weight which is a NAD you are avoiding. Also I do not agree with the low meat but it is lowering your Omega 6 consumption even more... however not worth it in my book. Better to eat grass feed beef.

What do you see as the practical impact of Protein closer to 15% than 20%? Especially in the context of more carbohydrates (no gluconeogenisis needed)? – Satchmo Mar 3 2012 at 17:35
Your body needs protein. Don't look at percentages but grams. 250 grams of protein is a decent starting point for you. However it is your choice – Eric Mar 3 2012 at 19:22
I know, I just wonder what people think the difference will be. If I drop from 3lbs of meat a day + eggs to 4-6oz + eggs am I going to....? – Satchmo Mar 8 2012 at 1:22
I would not want to be a participant in that study.. How about 10 oz of meat a day + eggs? – Eric Mar 8 2012 at 8:06
