Hello, paleohacks world! After many months lurking in the background, here I am with my first post.

Male, 30 years old. I have been increasingly Paleo over the last 8 months. January was a "Whole 30" month. I wanted to see how things went so I got the lipid panel/VAP/more done Feb 15. Results are below. (note there was a small weekend of beers and eating sub-par foods on Feb 1st if that is important)

I am curious about the high LDL and total cholesterol. I know TC isnt that good of a marker in itself (right?) but what about LDL?

Ive lost weight, gotten stronger but now I need some help to defeat the "youre cholesterol is going to be horrible on that paleo diet" argument. I want to keep turning friends to the paleo darkside!

Lift weights 1-2 times a week, play sports 1-2 times/week. I take fish oil and CLO and vitamin D3 and Magnesium at night. Sleep is 7-8hrs. Weight 150.0 lbs BP: 108/65 BMI: 22.8 Body Fat %: 12.0

If what I was eating in January was important here was my log: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhergB_btuhPdEN4eFd6Z2xHUmgwMUJLUXFrbzdFX3c#gid=0

The results (sorry for the quality):

what happened here?

Should I be worried? Whats the LDL deal? Anything else that I am missing besides the LDL in the results?

Your labs look pretty good to me. I'm no expert at this, but I think your TSH might be a bit high. This could be a sign of hypothyroid, which can cause downregulation of the LDL receptor leading to high LDL. Do you eat any seafood/seaweed? You can look into iodine/selenium supplementation; check out some Chris Kresser articles and his podcasts with Chris Masterjohn.

Then again, it's sometimes said around the paleosphere that as long as your HDL is good, trigs are low, LDL is of the large buoyant type, and inflammation is minimal, then a total cholesterol of somewhere between 200-240 is fine. High cholesterol can simply be caused just by higher than average butter consumption.

I eat kelp noodles a couple times a month. Not too much seafood though. Is it the dairy in the butter causing an issue (aka could ghee be contributing)? I eat a fair amount of ghee – chiefy81 Mar 6 2012 at 1:00
sorry, just created an account... Im the OP – chiefy81 Mar 6 2012 at 1:00
Check out this thread: paleohacks.com/questions/36855/… Basically, the specific ratio of fatty acids in dairy fat (cream, butter, ghee) seems to have a fairly pronounced effect on raising LDL and total cholesterol. I'd suggest checking out Chris Kresser's podcast trilogy with Chris Masterjohn about cholesterol, and if you feel you'd like to lower LDL a bit, try reducing butter/ghee consumption. – Phoenix Mar 6 2012 at 1:22

I had similar results as you (haven't done VAP yet though)...will link to my recent reddit comment reply with lots of resources: http://www.reddit.com/r/Paleo/comments/qbyna/blood_test_results_after_lubing_my_arteries_with/c3yxkku

hope that helps

Your LDL looks high to me; I'm not an expert. Check out www.trackyourplaque.com ; almost the same as a paleo diet with lots of discussion on optimal lipid panel.
