So I've been Paleo for over a year, but i recently decided to do a Whole 30. Done several Whole 30's before and I've never had cravings like this! I'm craving ice cream, milkshakes, and baked goods. These things haven't been a regular part of my diet in years. What gives?

Background: Crossfit 3-4 times a week, yoga about once a week. Sleep is good. Thyroid problems that have been well controlled for 2-3 years.

Exactly how long have you been on Whole30? What foods have you dropped? And has your carbohydrate intake gone down? – Frugal Jen Mar 6 2012 at 0:54
@Ashley,do your Whole 30 rules allow for a "feast" meal of allowable foods? It's possible a legal feast might allow whatever's gone whacko to simmer down. – Nance Mar 6 2012 at 1:34
Well I would occasionally have cheese, maybe a gluten free or paleo treat once or twice a week. Some white rice. I'm normally about 90% paleo. I've also kept my carbs reasonably high just due to the thyroid disorder, grapes and a sweet potato per day. @Nance I broke down and checked my calories the past few days and I'm staying around the 1600-1800 range being 5'4" and about 135 pounds. – Ashley Mar 6 2012 at 1:48
Oh and I've been in it 1 week. – Ashley Mar 6 2012 at 1:49
Yeah, I'm thinking you need carbs. Also, is your weight lower than your body wants it to be? – Renee Mar 6 2012 at 1:49

These cravings are for sweets, so I'm guessing by doing the Whole 30, you have decreased your sucrose/fructose. I know for myself, whenever I clean up my diet (even if it is pretty decent) I always crave sweets.

I always find that adding in more fat helps as does a small amount of fruit (i.e. a few strawberries straight after your meal - that is when I crave sweet food). What types of fat are you using? Are you making sure you are eating enough protein?

I also go for herb tea when it's really bad but after about 2 weeks, I'm good again. It's amazing how much those "little" treats here and there affect our body.

IMO, your calories also seem low. I'm 1 inch taller than you & 3# lighter & I don't do too much exercise (walk daily) & I eat approximately 2000 calories a day.

Thanks sherrid. I'm using predominantly avocados and coconut products (milk, oil, flakes, butter). Protein is high generally over 100 grams per day. Tea might be a great addition. I'm drinking a kombucha about every other day, I've been brewing my own over the past 2 months, I really found that the kombucha helps my skin. – Ashley Mar 6 2012 at 2:28
More animal fat helps me kill the cravings so that might help you. – sherrid Mar 6 2012 at 2:58
Oh & I meant glucose/fructose not sucrose/fructose. Sucrose is made up of glucose & fructose! – sherrid Mar 6 2012 at 21:16
