ok, so I have started logging my foods again because I am stalled. I am going with more customized foods too since some of them seem pretty off (heavy cream was totally incorrect). lets say that my % are sitting at 63% fat 19% protien and 17% carb. Should I just move on to tomorrow or down a couple of tablespoons of coconut oil tonight?

I think learn from it - each day it will become more intuative. I think it's better that the ratio is made up of less carbs - not more fat to decrease the carb ratio - if that makes sense. Calories do matter too.

However, whatever you do, don't make the mistake of thinking "I've ruined today, I'll start again tomorrow"! keep making the right decisions today!

no i have been doing this a year so I am good on not blowing the day because my %% are off. I just had to many carbs to make by numbers look the way I want. – paleoprimal Mar 6 2012 at 3:03
For me, the great thing about Paleo is that you don't have to worry about numbers. – CaveDad Mar 6 2012 at 17:52

Really? You want to eat more calories from fat so that your carb ratio is better? Do you know how wrong that sounds? Seriously! You have still eaten the same amount of carbs! Exactly the same amount. Only difference will be that you have eaten more calories.

What is your goal? Is it to be healthy and lose weight? Is it to eat real foods and be active? Or is it to have the "perfect" carb to fat ratio? Because the last one is irrelevant.

Also, how do you feel today? Are you really sick? Do you have high-carb syndrome? Have you put on 3 pounds? Chronically elevated insulin disorder?

no I am on a plateau because my carbs have been too high.Ijust re-staring my food logging because of the plateau. I have only lost 21 pounds in the past year, have added definate muscle but I am still overweight by far. Since I am logging and I have a day where my numbers arent correct is there a way to fix it? when I get off course and over 50 carbs a day it takes me a long time to get back into losing weight. I am sluggish lately and thing it may be by iron levels as I dont eat read meat due to a prevously diagnosed IBs constipation problem. so i am taking a iron supplement. – paleoprimal Mar 6 2012 at 15:26
You're plateauing not because you're eating too many carbs, you're eating too many calories. Also, IBS from meat but not often-constipating iron tablets, that's a bit weird. Sure the red meat was the culprit? – Matt Mar 6 2012 at 16:12
^^ What Matt said. Eating more fat doesnt mean you have eaten less carbs. You have still eaten the exact same amount (gram wise). Stop worrying so much about your carb/fat ratios, and take a look at your calorie levels. If you have plateaued it is probably because you have lost weight and your calorie requirement has changed (downward). Put your info into Fitday and check how you are going. Just a note, eating more calories from fat is not going to make you lose weight. – peter Mar 6 2012 at 21:58

I agree with Eric 100%. Baby steps, the journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. Banish guilt, fear, regret, lower stress. The Paleo Lifestyle is a marathon not a sprint, we all fall down & skin our paleo knees on occasion, if we humans do not make mistake we are not learning. Patience & self experimentation are a consideration.

Keep things simple.

Honestly the pressure and stress of trying to get macronutrient percentages perfect probably outweighs any positive affect of actually getting the macronutrient levels perfect.

Think about the history of the human race, sometimes we ate more, sometimes we ate less. Try and set some specific goals that are easy to remember and keep. This is a great tip I heard the other day: 1 bite of a starchy carb is around 5g of carbs. Now you can use that rather than trying to work out ratios.

I am personally trying to make sure I get enough calories as I am starting a specific training program. So I have spent some time and worked out a few meal options knowing that if I eat these I will get what I need. Sometimes I eat a little less, sometimes a little more. Today I felt hungry and so just stuck a dollop of coconut oil in my coffee.

I try not to think about weighing and measuring, our ancestors never did and unless you are in competitive training it probably does not really matter.

I hope this helps a little.

I will try your bite measurement to help my carbs. I have been eating a 1/2 a medium sweet potato some days and maybe it needs to be 1/2 a small one.. – paleoprimal Mar 6 2012 at 15:27
