I've been loving some bison jerky I picked up a while back but it has too much added toxic stuff. Can anyone recommend a place to get bettr jerky reasonably? Even beef would be ok. I tried making my own from a bison roast I had but it was just too weird and tough. LOL also too much trouble and I still have to buy the roasts. Any help is appreciated! I need my snacks!

Steve's Original sells what are called "Paleo Kits". Basically different types of jerkey - some of them packaged with dried fruit - all paleo :) And might I add delicious.

Here's the site:

I highly recommend The Coconut Paleokit - jerkey packaged with coconut & dried strawberries. Yum.

http://www.paleobrands.com/

It's Robb Wolf's company. I really like their jerky.

I'm a pretty big fan of http://www.primalpacs.com/ I haven't done any head-to-head comparisons though. This thread may inspire it in me. :)

US wellness meats. Here is their Jerky Page, I also buy the pemmican. They aren't the best tasting I have ever had, but then again -they are pretty pure, grassfed beef etc.

My coworker gets his from here, and I've tried it. It's really tasty: http://stevesoriginal.com/ Also, you can get goldenvalleynatural.com easily too. Health food stores carry it, and they have organic beef. It still has some added sugar I think. It's tasty, however.

It really depends on what you're looking for from your jerky. I don't know that there's a commercial "best" really in the US, just a least worst. Because of the FDA rules on beef jerky, all commercial jerky has to essentially be cooked at 160 or so degrees. ie. if you were eating a steak, that would be at the "Well Done" stage. Kills off any bad bacteria, but essentially cooks the beef to death too. So you're not getting any other benefits other than protein. You're "best" would be making it yourself, but as you saw, it's a pretty big freaking hassle. To be honest, I haven't found a good solution yet myself, so I've been limiting my beef jerky intake since I can scarf down a pound+ a pop, and you know how expensive that gets.

Cowboy Dan's Jerkey Emporium has a good selection of grass-fed bison jerkey, plus some wild Alaskan Salmon jerkey and a good selection of sugar free jerkeys. http://www.cowboydansjerky.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=grass+fed.

I wouldn't be me if I didn't say ... make your own!

While it's easiest to do it with a dehydrator, an oven at very low temp will do. Also, you can form ground meat jerky, too -- saving money and time trying to cut that hunk of steak down perfectly.

A (good) dehydrator will be the best investment you ever make.

Personally tried these and love them, grass-fed beef, no sugar of any kind, http://grassfedjerkychews.com/

I think Jerky is something you have to do yourself. I was working with a friend who has an awesome recipe for Jerky and when we went to commercialize it, all of the weird commercial kitchen regulations and cooking stuff for meat basically ruined the texture and taste so we didn't pursue it. So, even though it's a pain, about every two weeks or so, I just make my own.

try to make your own, its pretty simple and there are many many recipes online. I am starting to make my own and I am loving it. It beats the price and besides that, you know exactly what is going in your jerkey

Thank you everyone. We already have a jerky machine, typically making venison jerky, which just doesn't do it for me. I gave ground bison which dehydrates nicely but haven't found a seasoning recipe I like yet. I was careful in choosing and experimenting but the jerky upset my stomach. I am not sure why because I used spices I typically cook with! If anyone can make recommendation or has a recipe please let me know!

Making jerky at home using a dehydrator is AWESOME. If you purchase one with stackable trays (and buy extra trays), you can make loads all at once. It takes a few days to fully dry out, but its pretty hassle free and soooo worth it.

I've tried two types of beef (not bison) Paleo jerky, and wrote about them here: http://www.unfinishedman.com/paleo-beef-jerky-reviews-primal-pacs-vs-hunted-and-gathered/

The long and short of it are that both Hunted & Gathered and Primal Pacs are excellent jerky, though I happen to favor one over the other. I too would like some bison jerky, so I'm on the hunt for that as well.
