The Mayo Clinic EmbodyHealth website has a nice list of healthy foods to eat, includes Paleo staples like blueberries, salmon, almonds, broccoli, spinach, sweat potatoes . . .

But Mayo adds Red Beans, saying

Red beans — including small red beans and dark red kidney beans — are a good source of iron, phosphorus and potassium. They're also an excellent low-fat source of protein and dietary fiber. Red beans also contain phytonutrients, which may help prevent chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. Don't like red beans? Substitute another kind to enjoy beans' health benefits.

And wheat germ, saying:

At the center of a grain of wheat is the wheat germ — the part of the seed that's responsible for the development and growth of the new plant sprout. Although only a small part of the wheat seed, the germ contains many nutrients. It's an excellent source of thiamin and a good source of folate, magnesium, phosphorus and zinc. The germ also contains protein, fiber and some fat. Try sprinkling some on your hot or cold cereal.

sigh I suppose 80% paleo is something many of us achieve in our paleo eating so I guess I feel okay.

But are red beans a better legume? Or should these be off the itinerary completely. How about wheat germ, does wheat germ exclude enough of the bad elements of wheat that if could go back on the menu, or is wheat germ the same old problem with wheat as ever?

I don't quite get your question. There are a bazillion sources out there which will indicate whole grains and legumes as healthy foods. You have to decide what you're going to believe. – Renee Mar 8 2012 at 1:19

The questions were simple enough, I'll cut and paste them again. (1) are red beans a -better- legume? (2) does wheat germ exclude -enough- of the bad elements of wheat? – Anondson Mar 8 2012 at 3:34

According to Lalonde, wheat germ contains lectins (WGA and maybe others) that are destroyed in cooking, but I understand that people eat it raw. – Not James Mar 8 2012 at 8:18

I am convinced that wheat germ and all the other wheat stuff I was pounding down because it's supposed to be healthy is the reason I got IBS, which turned into colitis.

I Don't get the OP's question either but I will say that after now 3 years of eating good paleo I do miss wheat germ. I grew up with my pop putting it on my peanut butter and honey sandwiches. There's something about toasted wheat germ that is a comforting thing for me. I avoid it now but I don't think it's harmful to otherwise healthy folk.
