Hi Everyone,

I'm on week 4 of paleo .. Very low carb, and these last few days I've been experiencing a familiar awful pain in my left lower back. I feel like I'm developing a stone. I've had them before and don't want to go down that path again...any suggestions on how to prevent an attack while on a high protein diet? I'm so totally enjoying the benefits of eating this way (I've lost 14 lbs and feel great), but can't bear to go through the pain of a stone EVER again. (sheer agony..would prefer natural childbirth pains)

any proven methods or suggestions welcome.

Thanks.

You probably need Magnesium. Try 500 mg Mag Glycinate before bed.

Thanks Dragonfly...(the link you posted is about breech birth?) wondering if you might have a magnesium article that got mis-linked by chance? – Leanne Mar 13 2012 at 0:53

Citrate would be a better choice in this case since you get the benefits of magnesium as well as the citrate itself, which has been shown to be antagonistic to nephrolithiasis. – Travis Culp Mar 13 2012 at 1:40
Thanks, Travis! Good to know... – Dragonfly Mar 13 2012 at 2:07

Apple Cider Vinegar. Probably better if it's raw, unfiltered, non-pasteurized, etc.

Have you heard that people with kidney stones should be on a low oxalates diet? You maybe eating foods that are too high in oxalates which will flare up your kidney stones. Try googling low oxalates diet for kidney stones for more info.

I did ALOT of research on hot to never have another kidney stone and the things I found most helpful was you should be eating watermelon or i have found juicing it you get much more from. also drinking celery and/or cucumber juice is also very helpful. I was told to eat a low oxilate diet but I couldnt bring myself to stop eating greens, nuts, and chocolate. I drink 1-2 green juices a day along with 1 watermelon juice a day and have not had a stone in almost a year. Hope this is helpful I am about to start paleo this week!

Here's your answer: the diet is ludicrous. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketogenic_diet#Adverse_effects Follow the references and read the source material. Kidney stones are a common problem for this kind of diet. Sure it won't affect everyone, so others on the diet that don't get them will tell you it was something unrelated, but there is a high probability.

The diet itself is a "hack". You will lose weight, sure, but the costs are high. The diet is easy, who wouldn't want to go on a simple diet and lose weight?
