I love tracking shit. Because of that, I've been tracking how popular the "paleo" idea has been the past couple years. My business is spending too much time on paleo websites, and business is good! Here are where popular paleo websites rank out of all domains on the internet:

alt text

Here are things I've noticed: while "paleo" has been getting more popular, the top few sites have become mega more popular. This includes sciency sites, recipes cites, and this weirdo site called paleohacks. Also, I noticed that some awesome sites don't have as much traffic as I'd expect (e.g. thatpaleoguy). What strikes you about these rankings? Note that very few health/nutrition websites that are actually useful are in the top 1,000. Mercola is #500...I know he ruffles feathers for many, but he at least doesn't offer standard advice.

Note that this ranking is based on the flawed Alexa methodology, and not all sites are included because of difficulty gathering info.

If I didn't include your site, sorry. This was done quickly over lunch. – Kamal Mar 13 2012 at 18:30

Ha! It's a nonprofit, unfortunately. – Kamal Mar 14 2012 at 0:59

Making top 100K is quite an accomplishment for an individual. That's really cool. I checked Mark's last summer and it wasn't at 2,000 then. It's growing fast.

Sites that get a lot of comments move through rankings much faster than just blogs. Both MDA and PH get repeat customers all day so it makes sense that they move up.

Do you happen to have the info for Evolutionary Psychiatry? That is one of my favs.

I haven't heard of most of the bottom half of that last. It seems fitting that MDA would make the top; pretty much everyone I know that does paleo (myself included) began with the Primal Blueprint. Mark is really exceptional at presenting information in a digestible way. His is the only blog I read every single day.

Evolutionary Psychiatry is 112,000. There's a handful of "idea generating" sites that I love, such as Deans, Guyenet, Jaminet, Masterjohn, etc. These are sites that potentially change people's habits, and deserve even more traffic! – Kamal Mar 13 2012 at 19:37

+1 I get a lot of questions about how to undo a SAD life, and I tell people to start at MDA. Mark is a talented and balanced researcher and stays on top of things. – DFH Mar 13 2012 at 22:48

Whaddabout Chris Kresser?

17,000. And definitely one of the easiest to read paleo sites. – Kamal Mar 13 2012 at 22:53
His site desperately needs a search feature. It's nearly impossible to find the good stuff there without it. – jake3_14 Oct 6 at 1:06
Yeah, it's way down in the bottom bar. I agree, I wish it were more accessible. – Karen P. Oct 6 at 4:25

Check chowstalker.com, which is the main recipe place for many sites. What's its ranking?

32,000. Such a beautiful website. – Kamal Mar 13 2012 at 18:35

Love this info! Thanks for posting. Glad to see the likes of our kind up there in the 2,000s!

The surprise for me is that PH is at 8,000 yet many of the others SHOULD appeal to the PH community and are much lower. I mean, we link to those sites all the time in our PH threads.

I check Melissa, ThatPaleoGuy, J Stanton, PHD, etc., every day--where's everyone else going? Or, is the problem that I visit PH a dozen or more times per day and the others only once or twice?

Ouch, I'm getting a headache from all this thinking ...

Forums are more traffic heavy per user than other types of sites. You might check those other sites and you might even read a couple of articles, but compare that to how you interact with the forum here. You are likely spending more time here, and interacting with the site more (which produces more traffic). It's not surprising that the top 3 sites all have forums, which probably contribute heavily to their traffic numbers. – Talldog Mar 13 2012 at 18:55

I have not heard of most of these sites and look forward to exploring them. I bet superhumanradio will become more popular given the podcast's recent exposure on Itunes. I listen everyday. I am also happy to see undergroundwellness on the list since I also enjoy that podcast.

Interesting stuff! I'd bet paleohacks has a far higher 'addict index' than most of the other sites. I assume these numbers are for visits and not for unique visitors?

Sorry, can't answer. Too busy jumping around paleohacks. – Kamal Mar 14 2012 at 0:58

Someone just posted a comment on my site saying how wrong I am because Dr. Kruse's traffic is growing and mine isn't. Alexa isn't that accurate, but even if it were, I think this is exactly why I made a big deal about Dr. Kruse getting spots at PaleoFX, Paleo Summit, and AHS. It's a great way to drive traffic to your site.

Dr. Kruse's traffic is probably also increasing because he hired a marketing group. Why don't you two do that? :-) – Chauncey Gardner Apr 11 2012 at 20:10

A marketing group? Maybe he’s expecting the medical license to get revoked and trying to boost his revenue stream. Apparently Sisson rejected his leptin book after looking at the first draft. – Paleo2.0 Apr 11 2012 at 20:16

Because I could care less. My blog is a hobby, not my business. – Bread-Eating Beelzebub Apr 11 2012 at 20:25

...the "I could care less" phrase always sounds strange to me (being British i suppose), i believe the saying evolved from the British phrase "I could not care less".... – daz Apr 11 2012 at 23:48

No she said it right the first time. She could care less, but she doesn't. She does care and we now have proof. – Monte Aug 16 at 1:41

Any idea what sort of daily hits these sites get? I started my own paleo recipe site about 18 months ago - and by no means is it going to compare with these experts - its just great to have some idea how one fits into all that. I heard there are 8,000 food blogs in the English Language - so its a tough world of food blog competition out there! www.cucinaceri.com !

Right now I'm rather lovin' Cucina Ceri! Italian + Paleo, I couldn't really ask for anything more. – eddieosh Aug 16 at 11:18
