I am thinking of adding a small amount of iodine to my diet in the form of dulse (red alga) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dulse

Does anyone else use dulse to supplement iodine?

I've been thinking about doing so. I'm quite concerned about getting sufficient iodine so have been using quite a bit of Nori. Dulse looks like a better source though... – Suz - Paleo Oz Mar 13 2012 at 22:40
weird! I was just checking paleo hacks, regarding iodine! Would some daily fish sauce be sufficient? How much? – Lyndsay Mar 13 2012 at 23:16

I just started recently after seeing Emily Deans mention it on Twitter. I got the same kind she does (Maine Coast Sea Vegetables); Whole Foods carries it. If my math is correct, 1T of dulse is ~150% DV. I put it in salad or soup.

That is the exact one I was looking to purchase at a health store today! – Eric Mar 13 2012 at 23:30

Dulse has a lot more iodine than nori. For the last few weeks I've been making a seaweed soup at least a few times a week to increase my iodine. I throw in a little bit of dulse in hot water, add some anchovies or anchovy sauce, and then either shrimps, or egg, or both. It's really tasty.

Oh, and that's just for the full leaf dulse. You can also get dulse flakes and they're easy to sprinkle on salads or on ground beef. – Sara S. Mar 13 2012 at 23:15

i make a really delicious sea vegetable salt for my food which is basically granulated kelp, dulse, all different kinds of sea salts (celtic, hawaiian...etc, usually if i am in a different town and stop by a health food store i look to see what they have in bulk and just add it to the mix) bladderwrack..etc. sometimes i know i want more of one than the other so i have little bulk staches of each

I eat it some of the time, but prefer other varieties of seaweed. I think I get most of my iodine from sea animals.

+1 for Dulse... so far it's my favorite of the seaweeds/vegetables I've tried... and it's at a reasonable price. I accidentally picked up a bag of Hiziki and didn't realize until I went to check out that it's $23 for a 2oz bag!!!

Also, adding more iodine has helped with greater energy and mental clarity, check out the iodine thread over at MDA for more info:MDA Iodine Forum
