I am having a laprascopic surgery Friday (tubal ligation) and am trying to figure out what vitamins/foods I should focus on to speed up recovery. I'm currently taking 125% of recommended Vitamin K1 to prepare - but are there any other recommendations?
Last surgery I did I ended up eating crackers for days after - what would be good alternatives? Easy, small portions, minimal prep - to get me through those rough first few days?
Not trying to be all in your business, but please research Tubal Ligation Syndrome before going through with it. I had it done and my periods are super painful and god awful disgusting and long now. The ligation cuts off blood supply to the ovaries and wreaks havoc with your hormones. Believe me, I understand the need to control the babies, but man what a price.
My instinct would be go for the broth. I'd probably allow my body to have what it wanted though, being as it's a somewhat exceptional circumstance. And I'm pretty sure it would want broth ;-)
Many surgical centers ask that you stop taking fish oil a week before so your blood isn't too thin. I supplement vitamin C and zinc after any major trauma.
As for meals, if you're up for it, make a large batch of stew and a casserole of shepard's pie this week and have portions in the freezer to use as you need. Bonus points if you include heart or liver in the above concoctions. If you're looking for grab-and-go, pate was good for me, and I remembering delivery Thai soup being delicious.
I've had 3 belly laps, and each time I've come out phenomenally nauseated from the anesthetic. I can tell you what I'd stock: fruit gelatin, fresh ginger for good ginger tea, gluten free gingersnaps, and a nice french onion soup made with homemade beef broth. I also agree with JitzGrrl about the Thai. whenever I feel crummy, I really like a capsaicin hit - can someone make a run for some tom kha gai for you?
And as much as I hate to admit it, my mom is right - get up and moving right away, even if it's a walk around the block. I healed a LOT faster on my most invasive surgery when I had someone cramming good food and very slow walks into me.
For any surgery:
1) Vitamin C helps with wound healing
2) Probiotics, fermented foods since you might be put on antibiotics before/after
3) Freeze some soups/stews with bone broth - it's the best for recovery
4) Have good iron sources like from red meat, liver etc. ready to eat post-surgery in case you get anemic, or lose more blood than expected
5) ginger for anesthesia nausea/vomiting
