It's my understanding that to be truly paleo (or practically) - the calories do not so much matter, but I've been reading a lot of people posting about being on a VLC - paleo plan. I was doing 1200/calories a day and my function nutritionist said I wasn't eating ENOUGH to even lose weight. So, what's the deal?

"VLC" refers to "Very Low Carb," not "Very Low Calorie," as far as I have ever seen them used. 1200 kcals per day may not be enough for you by any stretch depending on your height, weight, body fat, activity level, etc.

P.S. Some people also refer to "LC" for "Low Carb" and "ZC" for "Zero Carb" diets. :-)

I was eating 1200 calories too, though it was only after a kept a food journal that I found that out. I was not functioning, I was bloated, and had no energy. I bumped it up to 1800-2000 calories and not only am I able to tear through a workout, but my body is able to recover and I'm finally leaning out the way I want. Just from experience, I do not recommend the VLC diet because if you are active, you'll find it very difficult to compete.
