Recent Longitudinal Study: Red Meat and Higher Mortality

I know previous studies have linked processed red meats to cancer, but this recent study also links unprocessed red meat to disease development. This study cites saturated fat, cholesterol, and heme iron as risk factors for disease development, which certainly isn't new, and it seems that grass-fed red meats are frequently touted in the Paleo community as one of the healthiest foods available. But I was just wondering, would grain-fed vs. grass-fed red meat be enough to account for this disease development? If grass-fed beef has a lower fat content and better fatty acid profile than CAFO beef, does this make it an entirely different "beast," so to speak? Even more simplistically, can grass-fed meats be grouped together with CAFO meats in these studies? I'm still relatively new to Paleo and regularly eating red meat, so any information is appreciated :-)

Almost every major paleo blogger has mentioned it in some fashion or other. The most in depth is Denise Minger's guest post for Mark's Daily Apple. Robb Wolf has a post on it that links to other posts. – luckybastard Mar 16 2012 at 13:18

This study shows that smoking, alcohol, being sedentary and eating crap are bad for you (maybe). Actually, it doesn't show much of anything. It doesn't show much of anything about red meat when you consider the confounding variables. And food frequency questionaires? Seriously?
