I just had a physical today and the Dr. said my blood pressure was 170/? I cant remember the smaller number. I am recently down 45+ pounds, even the nurse after she weighed me said "dp you realize you lost over 40 lbs." I replied really?!? Of course I knew. As far as my diet goes I am strict, no cheats. Lean meats, veggies, no fruit yet, bacon 1 or 2 times during the week. I do not salt any of my meals because the taste is too much for me. Any ideas will help, I have to go in for a checkup again in 3 weeks. I told him I dont want to go on meds. Thank you

I'm sure their reading is accurate but you may or may not have hypertension. For at least 15 years I have had "white coat" syndrome, meaning my blood pressure is just fine at home BUT for some reason the readings are high at the doctor's office. Last week I took it right after walking my dogs and it was 133/70 which is fine when active. At the doctor's office they got 160s over mid-90s. By the end of my appointment, though, she got a normal reading. If you haven't already done so, you should buy a monitor and check your pressure in varied situations for a week or so before consdering meds. – Nance Mar 16 2012 at 23:12
I'm a fit 23 y.o. male and have had consistent systolic hypertension (upper 130s) for the past 3-4 years. Changing diets didn't do anything for me. I've yet to find a natural way to lower it, but you aren't alone. Lower blood pressure is really only beneficial from a longevity perspective...and beyond 50 or 60 years of age, the evolutionary selection to survive is fairly weak. – Silverspeed Mar 17 2012 at 1:32
I'm 28 male, had HBP for probably 6-7 years, at its worse it was 190s over mid-90s. Have been medicated for about 4 years now which brings it down to about 140s over 60-70s. Since starting paleo eating and focusing on omega 3:6 ratio it is around 130-140 over 60-70 unmedicated. This is still hypertensive and I too have no idea how to bring it down further without medication. I haven't had my bloods tested since paleo dieting, I will when I get around to it, I've always had quite low cholesterol so I'm really interested to see what effect, if any it's had on small particle LDLs. – Rob Jun 18 2012 at 2:13

Mine is always high in the doctor's office but fine when I test at the pharmacy or grocery store. White coat syndrome is very common.

If I sit quietly and sort of meditate it always goes down.

Practice slowing your breaths down to 6 or 7 breaths a minute and do this for 15 minutes a day. If you use the second-hand on a watch or clock, that's about 5 seconds of inhaling followed by 5 seconds of exhaling (or 4 inhale, 6 exhale).

There's a device that helps you do this by monitoring your breaths and using a tone/music to guide your breathing, but it's pretty expensive ... doing it on your own is free!

does this really lower blood pressure? Or just pulse rate? I'll try it! Since my BP is a bit high and i have zero other risk factors – gydle Mar 17 2012 at 7:42
The link points to the research page. I wasn't using it for bp, but it helped me get off meds, so I'm a believer. – Beth-WeightMaven Mar 17 2012 at 10:52
I'm yet to give this a consistent go. I guess, like a lot of people, I overlook the really simple solutions like this, and assume something more technical is required. – Rob Jun 18 2012 at 2:15

It's surprisingly easy to regulate blood pressure using paleo.

Increase potassium intake. http://www.healthaliciousness.com/articles/high-potassium-vegetables.php

Increase niacin intake. http://nutritiondata.self.com/foods-000110000000000000000.html

Interesting. I had hypertension blood pressure in January. My potassium on the tests came out lower than average too. Just not low enough for them to say much about it. – Ashley Aug 8 at 13:07
A low potassium to sodium ratio is one of the cardinal consequences of Western diets and contributor to metabolic syndrome. Most people are deficient in dietary potassium. – meta Aug 9 at 0:38

I've been on Altace for 6 years. I carefully analyze if I've noticed any changes in any organ system, as well as any type of side effect that didn't exist before I was on this drug. I honestly have never noticed any kind of side effect at all from day one. More importantly, my blood pressure is now routinely around 110/70...sometimes slightly lower still. Considering that I take one 10mg capsule daily, and that my blood pressure was usually 145/85-95, the results are quite impressive.
