I recently bought some "bone dust" from a local grass-fed farm. It's cow bone ground with the marrow into almost a paste that I keep in the freezer. The farmer said it's mainly used to add calcium to a dog's diet, at about a tbs for every pound of the dogs's meat. I figured it could be beneficial as I don't eat much dairy besides ghee and I've been getting lazy with the broth. Does anyone have experience with eating ground bone? Would simmering this with a little gelatin be a worthwhile substitute for bone broth, maybe as a backup? Seems like a nice mineral/vitamin insurance plan which skips a lot of the pain of simmering a vat of broth in a small apartment.

Are you SURE you're not getting any brain or spinal cord matter? Boy, I wish I could unread a few books about prion disease. But it's a real consideration in this day and age. I have a relative who is a government veterinarian and he would have my head if I ate brains or used bone meal in my garden. And he's an old fashioned conservative who thinks spending extra for organic veggies is silly - not exactly an alarmist. How well do we process bones, anyway? I have no idea if this is an efficient way to get calcium or not. Nutritionist folks? |
